August 10, 201113 yr Author A few things I see (now I don't know all the stats off the top of my head) but I think the most glaring need right now is starting pitching. Yeah, the offense sucks at times but we have only three guys that I see we'll be able to throw out there and have a good chance to win (Ricky, Anibal, and JJ). This is assuming they resign Anibal, which I think is a no brainer. That is a pretty big hole. Considering if either one of them goes down for injury we are screwed. This was shown with JJ this year. The one positive of this season was we know Boni can play everyday. But what position? There I'm confused....
August 10, 201113 yr We need to be more worried and start to Cheer for Victory at the beginning of the year.
August 10, 201113 yr The injured list  Even healthy we arent even close to a playoff birth, and if you think we compare to the best teams in the NL when healthy you are just plain kidding yourself. WE have no 2nd starting pitcher. This has been a huge problem for a few years now. Nolasco and Sanchez are quality major leaguers, but if you think they can be a reliable number 2 on a playoff team you are flat out wrong. Nolasco at best is a number 3, he is just far to inconsistent. Anibal has number 2 potential but he doesnt get deep into games and he is inconsistent at times as well. WE need a consistent, preferably veteran and proven, starting pitcher who doesnt have to be an ace but just someone who we can rely on to give us quality innings every 5 days at the top of our rotation. Our lineup isnt all that close when healthy either. WE are still at least 2 pieces away. We have trotted out a guarenteed 2-3 outs in our lineup all year, and that isnt counting the pitchers. Mike Cameron needs to retire, Greg Dobbs has been great but he shouldnt be a starter, and omar infante should be a number 8 hitter on a good team. WE need 1 more bat, either middle of the order who can drive in runs or a top of the order number 2 hitter to go along with Matt Dominguez entering the picture next year. I think if we can get a guy like an Angel Pagan that would be a great addition to our lineup going into next year. We need to have a lineup like this next year: Boni, Pagan, Hanley, Stanton, Lomo, Gaby, Dominguez, Buck, pitcher. Good mix of speed, power, patience, and average in there. In addition to that we need a bullpen arm or 2 more. Enough of these young guys who cant throw strikes. We need a proven veteran who throws strike like Mujica can. How many consecutive years are we going to have this may guys out of the bullpen who cant throw strikes? Plain and simple, we arent all that close when healthy, either.

Isn't that what Ricky and Anibal are? Sure, Ricky has clunkers now and then but his record speaks for itself. As for Anibal, he's played pretty well this year. He's kept us in most games, it's just the offense has lost it for him. I agree with another hitter but I don't think the bullpen is that bad off. Remember, Webb is out.....
August 10, 201113 yr The injury list. The team need a legitimate 3B. The team team needs another reliable starting pitcher. The team needs 2 more solid bench players (which it may already have with the benefit of health)
August 10, 201113 yr Angel Pagan????? What a joke. next years lineup. Boni Cogs Hanley Stanton Lomo Cuddyer (sign him) Dominguez Buck Pitcher Also sign Edwin Jackson and another reliever
August 10, 201113 yr more Coco Crisp and Lance Berkman (if not Fielder or Pujols), less Wes Helms ...the advantage of signing Pujols would be more than the 7 WAR. take the 4-6 games against the Cards where he single-handedly kills us and we have a 10+ win player
August 10, 201113 yr Angel Pagan????? What a joke. next years lineup. Boni Cogs Hanley Stanton Lomo Cuddyer (sign him) Dominguez Buck Pitcher Also sign Edwin Jackson and another reliever  Cogs?????? What a joke. Maybe if he remembers how to hit. His great hitting is so unproven.  I think we need 1 big starter, a 3B (that isn't Dominguez) and a CF'er, and we take a chance at 2B with what we hhave now. I'd trade Dominguez for something we can use now. This team is way too weak on hitting to have him in the lineup when we're trying to get to the playoffs. I don't think we can have a year of Dominguez, Buck and Coghlan and expect to win. We don't even know if Bonifacio can keep things up for a whole year. I'm sick of this FO taking so many chances on unproven players and expecting them all to pan out. We have no clue how Dominguez is going to handle MLB pitching, we have no clue if Bonifacio can keep things up for a whole season, and we definitely have no clue that Coghlan can be a better hitter than what he's been for his whole MLB career besides that one half.
August 10, 201113 yr Coghlan's problem is not that he is an unproven hitter, it is that he is made of glass. He's been quite effective when not hurt, which in the past 3 seasons has amounted to about 4 months. He will not stay healthy in CF, and there is not other spot for him with Sanchez on the team. C: Buck 1B: Sanchez 2B: Bonifacio 3B: Dominguez (face it, they are giving him a shot) SS: Ramirez LF: Morrison CF: Coghlan RF: Stanton That is what I expect, and I expect to be unhappy about it.
August 10, 201113 yr Of course the injuries are big part of what needs to change, so as I've said before the med staff needs to change! As for next year, a third baseman is needed, another starter and most of all lose Helms!

He just sucked. This year, he may have been hurt, but regardless he didn't do anything to change my opinion that he may be one of the many rookie sensations who were just one year wonders.
August 11, 201113 yr am I the only one that thinks Coco Crisp is a solid, solid idea. Give him 2yrs/12mil or something. it's the least the FO could do after the Buck contract and I think every can agree that he's got the best name in baseball
August 11, 201113 yr Other than the multiple times he was pulled from games in April - May with nagging bulls*** and the 70 games he missed at the end of the year after he heated up, he was the very picture of health. He couldn't run full speed until Memorial Day at least.
August 11, 201113 yr It really doesn't matter whether or not he's fully healthy; even if he is, he's likely not the answer in CF. I don't see any reason to believe that he can handle the position, long-term. We need a CF'er. There's nothing special about Coghlan's offense, but at least that portion of his game is passable if you put him at another position where he's more likely to stay healthy/play better defense.
August 11, 201113 yr Well...Vaz may retire but maybe FO can re-sign him for back end starter and promise him team makes playoffs...and then sign a FA legit 3B or CF...
August 11, 201113 yr If we're going to not sign any position player free agents, I would really want to see CJ Wilson here next year. He would automatically give us a great front 4 with JJ, CJ, Ricky, and Ani.
August 11, 201113 yr am I the only one that thinks Coco Crisp is a solid, solid idea. Give him 2yrs/12mil or something. it's the least the FO could do after the Buck contract  The criticism of Buck is really tired now that he's a roughly average bat.  I like the Crisp idea, otherwise. I would add him and Wilson, and then another Livan Hernandez-esque starter.
August 11, 201113 yr What needs to happen next year for the Marlins to compete: The Phillies and Braves are abducted by aliens. But seriously, the Marlins organizational philosophy is to simply hope that their guys get better and everyone else gets worse while adding some cast off role players during the offseason. If this team wants to compete, they need to improve drastically through free agency. You have the best two teams in the league in your division. Either be aggressive and honest about improvement, or expect more of the same crap next year - division doormats.
August 11, 201113 yr We should try to sign Erik Bedard instead of C.J. Wilson because he was better a decade ago.
August 11, 201113 yr Keep in mind that a ~.710 OPS is the NL average. Coghlan might be below our expectations and yet still end up an above-average bat.
August 11, 201113 yr Coghlan's problem is not that he is an unproven hitter, it is that he is made of glass. He's been quite effective when not hurt, which in the past 3 seasons has amounted to about 4 months. In the 700 PA he's had since 2009, he's not been effective. Staying in the big leagues requires making adjustments after pitchers learn to handle him. He hasn't done that. He's shown over a short period of time that he can handle major pitching, but he hasn't shown that he can make the adjustments to stay around. This means that even when he's healthy he needs to earn his way back on the team.
