It sounds like Wilson isn't even on the team's radar and the report was likely an effort by Wilson's representatives to bump up the left-hander's asking price. Buehrle reportedly has three-year offers in the $36-39 million range from a few teams, and it seems likely that the Nats are one of those clubs.

At what point does Buehrle realize that a 4th year with the Nats isn't as good as 3 years and a more serious playoff opportunity with the Marlins? Is that where Pujols comes in? I mean wouldn't any pitcher rather be on a team supported by Pujols, Hanley, Reyes, etc and with a proven NL closer as opposed to a young and unproven Nats team thats still a few years away from being serious contenders?

Maybe not in 2012, but beyond that the Nationals will probably have a much better rotation than the Marlins if they manage to sign Buehrle.

 

Their core of young pitching is better than the Marlins' core right now.

 

The worst thing the Nationals have going for them right now is that idiotic Jayson Werth contract, but that start doesn't get super ridiculous until 2014.

I was wondering when the Cards were going to get in on Buehrle.. now that's a team I am worried will sign him.

Also, depending on who the Nationals bring in this offseason, you're really underestimating their team. They're getting Strasburg back next year, which is basically the equivalent to us getting JJ back.

 

They have a good core of players to build around just like we do.

 

Right now, both the Marlins and Nationals are players this offseason so this would be a better question to ask after the offseason ends.

Strasburg is slightly better than Johnson as far as number ones go. The Nats have Jordan Zimmermann as their number two and the Marlins don't have anyone in his class.
