I think Wilson is much more likely than Buehrle is right now. Half of all MLB teams are supposedly "interested" in Buehrle even if they all haven't made an offer.

We won't have to worry about trading big names if they don't sign here. This policy is a deterrent to this team's success. I don't think any other team in baseball has this policy; it's become part of the game - much like giving closers 9M/Year to pitch 55 innings a year. Just accept it and function with it.

I agree. If that's the hold up, go for it.

Admin Beinfest not worried that Marlins policy on no-trade clauses will hinder their free-agent pursuits

Marlins baseball operations president Admin Beinfest spoke with beat writers late this afternoon. And despite all of the buzz around the team’s pursuit of free agents, Admin offered little insight.

 

“We have nothing to announce, nothing to report on,� he said when asked about multiple reports that the team has reached an agreement with closer Heath Bell.

 

That’s not shocking — the team never comments until a player has passed a physical. Bell’s signing could be announced as early as Monday.

 

The Marlins are pushing hard to sign Jose Reyes this weekend, but that was not something Admin talked about, either.

 

“It’s hard to say,� he replied when asked about the chances the team could sign at least two players before the winter meetings start Monday.

 

“We’ve been active. We’ve been trying to do some things since the season ended. It’s always hard to put down a timetable.�

 

Earlier today, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that the Marlins’ biggets [sic] obstacle in signing pitcher Mark Buehrle is the team’s policy against including no-trade clauses in contracts.

 

Beinfest didn’t talk about the Buerhle negotiations, but he said in general the team’s policy has never been a big obstacle in the past.

 

He noted that Carlos Delgado didn’t have a no-trade clause in the four-year, $52 million contract he signed with the Marlins in January 2005. (Delgado was traded after the ’05 season to the Mets.)

 

When asked why the Marlins don’t include no-trade clauses, Beinfest replied: “I don’t know that I want to go into the ins and outs of it. It’s just something we’re comfortable with, that we believe in paying fairly.�

 

On how much dialogue the team has had this week with free agents:

 

“We’ll just keep that internal. We’re having conversations with free agents, we’re having conversation with teams. We have looked at everything. It’s very fair to say that right up to right now, and I’m sure through the weekend and into Dallas, we’re gonna continue on

that path. There’s been chatter on both fronts. That’s normal this time of year.�

 

On whether he is happy or frustrated with the team’s off-season so far:

 

“You have to ask me hour by hour… It can be frustrating if you can’t deal with what you want to achieve right that minute. You have to show some patience…

 

“It is the way it is. It doesn’t always go your way. .. It’s just not easy. You have to stay on it. Some days it’s frustrating. Some days its satisfying…

 

“We would like to have more things done than we have been able to complete but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have things… We have things going that we think can come to fruition. We’re hopeful that they do and we’re just going to stay on it. It’d be nice to have some things done. I’m not gonna use the word disappointed but we’d like to have some players in place.�

 

I highlighted the relevant portion. A no-trade clause is just one of the things that can be bargained for, and obviously the Marlins understand that to withhold an NTC, they'll have to pony up other things, namely more $$$. That's extremely fair, and as long as they indeed give the extra $$$, then this shouldn't hurt them.

 

If some player is unnaturally committed to the idea of an NTC, then that would suck for us, but I doubt that'd be the case if extra $$$ level the playing field.

I don't think that's the main motivation. I just think that the Marlins calculate that the value of having no NTC is greater to them than the value of having one is to the other players, and they seem quite confident of that.

 

Of course, along the lines of what you said, if they give one out, I suppose it could weaken their leverage in future NTC-related negotiations.

Eh, it's fine to do this if you have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. But I think if you're going to start spending like most of the rest of the league, you probably need to start allowing for things like this. If another team is offering a similar deal, are you prepared to allow the NTC they're offering as part of the package be the reason you get turned down? I don't hate the policy but it does make you wince a little when you read stuff like this.

It's just one provision among many.

If the agent counters with something else, you continue to negotiate. If the agent tells you it's a deal-breaker, you can give it in return for some other concession. Or not, and walk away.

 

Whether you give it to one guy has nothing to do with the next or any other guy. Every negotiation is unique.

They have never had a problem with telling people no before. If a guy like cj Wilson or bhuerle say"I want to come here but a No NTC is a deal breaker", you give it to them. When a guy like Volstad comes up saying the same thing you say sorry no thanks.

1 theory: They Marlins link their payroll to revenue. So,the payroll flexibility is especially valuable to them when, as now, even despite the optimism, there is a lot of uncertainty as to what things will look like 3-10 years down the line. Because of that, the ability to trade a significant contract has a very high value to the Marlins.

 

And, again, they're willing to give up something in return, obviously. It makes sense, and it shouldn't be a deal-breaker for most guys.

3 teams make 3 year offers to Buehrle

If a NTC is only thing keeping Mark Buehrle from becoming a Marlin, then just f*cking let him have his NTC. This is supposed to be a "new era" in Marlins baseball. Unless Beinfest wants to watch the Marlins face him three or four times a year when they play the Nats.

Earlier today, we heard that three teams have offers to Mark Buehrle. All three teams are offering the years and dollars that Buehrle is seeking, but he's yet to receive an offer that contains a no-trade close. More on Buehrle as the rumors pile up:

• Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that the Rangers, Nationals, and Marlins are being the most aggressive on Buehrle. Washington prefers a shorter deal with Buehrle to a longer contract with C.J. Wilson.
  
• SI.com's Jon Heyman tweets that Buehrle is seeking $14MM annually. There are indeed 14 teams interested in Buehrle according to Heyman, and he calls the Twins and Diamondbacks "surprise entrants" while noting that the asking price is prohibitive for them.

They worry me a lot. In two or three years, if run properly there is no reason that they shouldn't be the team to beat in the East, especially with the age that will be shown in Philly & Atlanta, and the Mets money problems might last for a while.
