Yoenis Cespedes to Athletics

Featured Replies

He can't sign a contract yet, pointless to offer one. Ruins your own market. Longer this goes, the more bidders who can jump in.

Reason why he can't sign a contract is the state department hasn't "Unblocked" his work status yet, so he can't sign. He could listen to offers though. No point in doing that.

The Latest On Yoenis Cespedes

By Mike Axisa [January 30, 2012 at 6:53pm CST]

Here's the latest on Yoenis Cespedes, who was officially declared a free agent last week...

  • "We are aware of the [spring Training] dates," said agent Adam Katz to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). "We expect him to be in camp with one of the clubs." Katz also called the market for Cespedes "meaningful and aggressive."
  • The Marlins, Cubs, White Sox, Orioles, and Tigers are five of the six clubs that have been in serious talks with Cespedes, reports ESPN's Jim Bowden (Twitter links). He is expected to travel to the United States in the next 7-10 days for face-to-face meetings.
  • Baseball America's Jim Callis said he would rank Cespedes in the 7-15 range of their top 100 prospects list, and that he would take over as the top prospect of pretty much any team that signs him.

7-15 range. Pretty good, I'd say.

Whatever, we have an elite farm system either way.

Guess who's visiting?

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal hears that Yoenis Cespedes is likely to visit the Marlins within the next week.

Cespedes will presumably meet with the other teams that have expressed interest in him as well, like the Cubs, White Sox, Orioles and Tigers. And there might be others. He's been declared a major league free agent and is waiting on a travel visa in the Dominican Republic. The 26-year-old outfielder batted .333/.424/.667 with 33 home runs and 99 RBI in 90 games last year in Cuba.Jan 31 - 11:57 AM

According to Joe Fisaro it was just a rumor that Cespedes doesn't wanna play in Miami because of all the Cubans down here (I'm actually Cuban myself). I'm not surprised at all-if anything he should want to play here even more than anywhere else because of all the Cubans.

Also interesting of note is according to him the team believes they have a "solid" shot at signing him.

What do you think the chances are of the Marlins signing Yoenis Cespedes? And are there any other moves the team is considering?

The Marlins make no secret about their interest in the 26-year-old Cuban native, who officially became a free agent last week. Miami is among a handful of teams that has reportedly shown great interest in Cespedes, who also is being linked to the Cubs, White Sox, Orioles and Tigers.

A few days ago, there was a report that stated Cespedes does not want to play in Miami, because he may feel the pressure of having to perform in a market that has a large Cuban influence.

From what I've gathered, that is not true. Cespedes is open to playing for the Marlins. And the team believes it has a solid shot at landing the power-hitting outfielder.

With free agents, it often comes down to money and opportunity. The Marlins feel they can provide both. It will be a matter of what the player wants and his comfort level.

From a talent standpoint, Cespedes is viewed as a "can't miss" prospect. The jury is still out on whether he will be ready to contribute by Opening Day. Most likely, he will need a stint in the Minor Leagues to polish up his game. If that's the case, it would be a few weeks or a few months until he is ready to contribute.

As for other moves, the team announced the signing of Austin Kearns to a Minor League deal with a Spring Training invitation last week.

Cespedes in Miami would be an immediate hit with the Cuban community. I wouldn't be surprised if people buy his jerseys before he even plays a regular season game.

Of course he would have to perform well to stay popular.

So much that my friend, a YANKEES fan, is willing to buy a jersey if he does....and he lives here in Vegas, lol.

No

- Whether true or not, this has been bugging me... He obviously had no trouble playing in Cuba plus if he signs with a team that is expected to make play-offs, wouldn't that be pressure too? So if he cannot handle pressure, he might as well just sign with Oakland

Miami Marlins notes: Cespedes, A. Sanchez, JC Oviedo, tickets, aquariums

by: Juan C. RodriguezFebruary 2nd, 2012 | 2:25 PM

As crews began rolling out sod on the Marlins Park infield Thursday, team president David Samson addressed several player- and stadium-related issues.

Yoenis Cespedes: Samson was unsure whether Cespedes, a Cuban defector who recently gained his Dominican residency, would visit South Florida at some point before signing.

Major League Baseball has granted Cespedes’ free agent status, meaning he can negotiate and even come to terms on an agreement, but the Office of Foreign Assets Control must unblock him before he can work in this country.

“Our offseason is not dependent on signing Cespedes at all, said Samson, adding talks are on-going. “This is an interesting player, but it’s like negotiating with a June draft pick. He’s just a little older, has got a little more experience and is closer to the big leagues.

Anibal Sanchez: Samson on Friday will be in Tampa, where the Marlins and Anibal Sanchez will have their arbitration hearing to determine the right-hander’s 2012 salary. Sanchez is seeking $8 million and the Marlins are offering $6.9 million. Though Sanchez can qualify for free agency after this season, Samson ruled out a multi-year extension for the time being.

Juan Carlos Oviedo: The closer formerly known as Leo Nunez remains in his native Dominican Republic and on the club’s restricted list. Samson said he would probably be in spring training, but would probably not be on the Opening Day roster. Samson also said the possibility exists MLB could take punitive action against Oviedo before he’s allowed to resume his career.

“There was an acknowledged violation of the law, Samson said. “To the extent that would result in disciplinary action from MLB, that would certainly make sense to me…I would say that everything would be on the table.

Samson on Hanley Ramirez: “Looks great, feels great, ready for Opening Day. Been working to rehab very hard…He keeps getting checked out by the doctor and he keeps looking good.

Josh Johnson: Samson said he’s throwing off a mound twice a week with no restrictions.

“He wants 35 starts, Johnson said. “He’s ready for a full season.

Opening night tickets: Fans are able to register for the chance to purchase individual game tickets to the April 4 inaugural game at Marlins Park against the Cardinals. Samson said only about 1,000 tickets will be made available (in pairs) to those randomly selected.

The March 6 exhibition game against the University of Miami is sold out, and the Marlins expect the March 7 game against Florida International to sell out as well within a week.

Aquariums: The aquariums behind home plate on either side of the rotating advertisement have been installed and outfitted with coral. The marine life won’t be added for another two or three weeks.

Samson allayed any fears that somehow the glass could shatter. He said a couple of weeks ago they brought in Gaby Sanchez to throw a ball as hard as he could against the glass and it didn’t leave a mark. The fish will be encased behind multi-layers of bulletproof glass. The Marlins also did tests with overthrows from outfield and are convinced under no circumstances can a ball hit and shatter the glass. Samson also said balls fouled back on check swings cannot directly impact the glass. They would either hit the ground first or sail above the tanks, which are two feet high.
