Yoenis Cespedes to Athletics

Cespedes is arriving in Miami today to meet with Katz, tweets Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post, and he's expected to meet with the Marlins tomorrow for a ballpark tour. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweets that executives from other teams may visit Cespedes later in Miami as well.

SHUTDOWN THE AIRPORTS

Just makes too much sense for him to sign here. Once he realizes how big the Cuban influence is on Miami, how the ballpark is located in little "havana". Obviously, he still wants the most money he can get. But if Miami matches any offer why would he not sign here?

Now if you're the marlins and a big reason why you were pursuing Pujols was for the Latin influence, then wouldn't you be willing to sign Cespedes at market price?

To further convince him, they should play clips of Livan-MANIA in 1997, and how well embraced he was.

I'm surprised that so many people are so eager to get this guy. I'm not opposed to it if he comes at a reasonable price, but the Marlins will likely be tying up a lot of money on an unproven commodity.

I guess I'm in the "whatever" mindset right now and will be pissed if the Marlins pay much beyond $30 million for him.

I'm actually wondering why they haven't mentioned anything about soler in relation to the marlins. Gammons said soler will probably command about 20.

Probably because Soler is much younger and further away. Cespedes is being billed as "MLB ready" even though I think that's a bunch of bulls***.

I think that targeting Soler is the smarter move to be making, but it sounds like the Marlins want someone they can plug into the outfield as soon as possible.

Marlins are "likely" to sign him.

Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel was told by an American League source that the Marlins are likely to sign Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

The Marlins haven't been shy about their interest thus far, so it wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Cespedes traveled to Miami on Tuesday and is expected to meet with higher-ups from the Marlins on Wednesday. The Tigers, Cubs, White Sox and Orioles are among the other clubs reported to have the most interest. While Cespedes is free to negotiate with MLB teams, he can't officially sign a contract until he is unlocked by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

EDIT: A few more points...

According to Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald, Cespedes said he would like to play in Miami.

Cespedes told reporters at Miami International Airport that he'd like to play for the Marlins and doesn't think he will need to play in the minors. "I'm ready to play in the big leagues. I would like to play in front of the Cubans here in Miami, but I don't know. There are some things that I can't control and I leave that to my lawyers,' Cespedes told El Nuevo Herald.

According to Joe Fisaro, the Marlins are "frontrunners" to get him. https://twitter.com/...037210460291072

According to Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com, sources are saying that the bidding may go as high as $60MM...Woah.

The five-tool centerfielder will be a rich man before he sees one pitch in spring training, as industry sources tell ESPNChicago.com that the bidding for the Cuban defector may go as high as six years, $60 million

Samson again saying they won't go crazy trying to sign him:

"From our standpoint, we are aggressively negotiating a contract, but there is no way of knowing if we will be a high bidder,' team President David Samson said last week. "It's like a regular free agent. We are negotiating to bring him on board. But he could easily sign with another team."

People are missing the point here about two different reason for the Marlins to want him so bad...even if they know he's not proven, and there's a LIKELY chance that he will not perform up to the money we pay...he is an investment to put people in the stands and that's revenue, even if there are more capable and proven guys...the marlins have to balance the baseball productivity with the marketing aspect of it.

They just said on hot stove that the marlins understand it will take more than 50 to get him

Sounds terrible.

I think he's going to be signed to a 10/60 contract.

To be announced tomorrow.

Think long-term money.

NPV of contract no more than 40M, so long as interest rates in years 5-10 average at least 4.7%

He'll have to get cleared by the government first of course.

I don't think that anyone is missing the point. I think there is skepticism that he pays for himself at $60 million.

Ten years? Isn't he 26? He's unproven outside of Cuba, you sure u wanna guarantee he's in Miami at 35/36 years of age? No thanks.

I do like the idea of bringing him in but at a reasonable price please.

Before this I didnt know OFAC also has to clear human beings. Ive worked on situations before where OFAC puts holds on funds or goods coming from Cuba, but was previously unaware ball players had to be cleared as well.
