Yoenis Cespedes to Athletics

Samson confirmed Marlins would go to lunch with Cespedes & give him ballpark tour Wednesday but team has limits on $ it's prepared to offer

"We want him, but we don't need him," Samson said. "The difference is this: When you want a player, you aggressively go out and try to sign him. When you need him, that's when negotiations get very one-sided."

I like the way Samson said that, it seems to say more of "We think we can get him within reason" not "he's too expensive and we wont get him". Just a more positive tone to me.

The opposite was when Marlins tried to get Pujols. Marlins were close to paying him more than the cost of the stadium.

So, he would be our starter CF after a couple of months in the minors?

People are missing the point here about two different reason for the Marlins to want him so bad...even if they know he's not proven, and there's a LIKELY chance that he will not perform up to the money we pay...he is an investment to put people in the stands and that's revenue, even if there are more capable and proven guys...the marlins have to balance the baseball productivity with the marketing aspect of it.

Think Alex Fernandez. Yeah, different era / diiferent locale, but the lesson still applies.

Short-term, we need nothing to boost sales. Long-term, winning boosts sales.

I have a feeling YC's agent is inside his head. Left to himself, I see no way he would not want to be in Miami, even at a "discount".

terrible risk when we don't need him and some scouts think he isn't a true everyday CF anyway and would be better off playing LF or RF. it'll be a letdown if they sign him from my standpoint because it's money that can be used to resign a guy like anibal after this season or apply towards any number of the FA crop next year. blah

"It would be good [to play here]," said Cespedes, who spoke briefly with half a dozen media members and signed autographs before exiting the international arrivals lobby. "There are a lot of Cubans and they would support me a lot. Hopefully I can play for the Marlins."

Wise decision.

Before this I didnt know OFAC also has to clear human beings. Ive worked on situations before where OFAC puts holds on funds or goods coming from Cuba, but was previously unaware ball players had to be cleared as well.

yeah, OFAC is pretty far reaching

In my last job we would have to have all of our accounts clear OFAC - it was usually a pretty easy, electronic process ....... however, it would be difficult when an account flagged.

usually it was just a mishap with names - but the list was long and also dealt with places and people that you couldn't do business with

we'd have to send additional information into the OFAC office and they'd usually clear it pretty quickly

That's the point, the money he'll bring in by putting fans in the stands will help in signing other players later. I've heard a bunch of Cuban friends say they'll go to 8-10 more games this year if he was here just to see him play.

that's some awful logic you have there. he's not going to bring in any extra fans because he's likely never going to be a star player. even if he gets to be a "fan favorite" it's highly doubtful it'll bring in anything else of note. WINNING consistently and keeping a healthy payroll that isn't burdened with bad contracts and money spent on unknown players (at least at this early point while they're still trying to get a read on what their attendance will be like) will go a long way to securing the future of this team. Cespedes will have hardly any impact at all despite what a "bunch of friends" told you lol.

I'm not sure you understand the difference between bad logic and possibly bad facts.

Its funny that a few weeks Cubs and Tigers fans were all about getting him, and now that he said he'd like to play for the Marlins theyre trashing him and he will be a bust.

Well, Cubs fans are bitter, and Tigers fans, well ... most of em are idiots, from my knowledge, and think that Prince and Cabrera are going to be the best 3-4 hitters of all time. Oh, and they're already engraving their World Series rings.

Well, they are the best in recent memory...

Although if Hanley regains his '09 form and Stanton reaches MVP status, we aren't too far behind.

The only place he could play in the majors & dress like this while looking normal is Miami...

They haven't done anything together yet, except maybe talk a little bit since the signing. We have no idea if they'll be the best.

On paper, though, yes they definitely are up there.

Lol that's him??? Typical Urbanized Miami Cuban...

I'd wear gaudy sh*t too if I knew I was getting tens of millions of dollars in a couple of days!

He'll fit right into the Miami scene

Heh - reminds me of the kids that they'll have out here in the developmental programs ....... you see a trio of 18 year olds looking like that walking through the grocery store in suburban phoenx (redundent phrase, I know) you know that some organization was giving a little freedom for the night (or the guys just snuck out on their own)
