I think the Marlins knew all along they can't afford Pujols, but they want to make noise and drum up publicity. People here are going to be sorely disappointed with what the Marlins end up doing this offseason.

 

 

If we do end up getting Reyes and Buerhle (Or even just Reyes), how can anyone be disappointed?

 

El Penguino is hinting that we might not do much at all. Loria would never be able to face that one at opening day, and he wants to bask in glory that day. Unless he has a team that looks credible, he won't be able to do that.

I didn't say that. I'm saying that they probably won't get Fielder or Pujols; they'll maybe get two of Jackson, Buehrle, Cespedes, and Reyes.

 

My impression is that some people here are expecting them to do more than that.

 

I think a lot of us are just excited that it's even a possibility. Most of us here realize that getting both Reyes and Pujols would put us far ahead of expected payroll projections. If we get Reyes plus one other from that list, I'm sure a lot of fans will be satisfied and wait for any possible trades to fill any other gaps.

 

Reyes & Burhle would make me ESTATIC, anything else would be gravy.

Albert Pujols: gravy so thick you might as well use a knife.

I wonder what path of action samson has planned if pujols accepts.

If you think about it, that's $40Mil+ increase payroll from last year, and thats only counting two FA (Pujols/Reyes)

You can probably start with all the guys who were in last Friday's fashion show. That was Buck, Sanchez, Infante, Ramirez, Nolasco, Morrison, Johnson and Bonifacio. That means 2 more....who were they ? Who lives here in the off-season, that could be another clue.

My point is, 9yr/225Mil is a more than competitive deal. If he does decide to go elsewhere or stay in St.Louis, it's because of comfort (and not because we didn't offer him enough). You can't do anything about that.

Just because they made the offer doesn't mean that it was a standing offer.

 

And we have NO PROOF (to my knowledge, anyway) that we offered $225,000,000.00. The original rumor was 5 years/$125 MM. Just because we supposedly offered $25MM/year does not mean that a 9 year deal we may or may not have offered would have the same yearly value.

I really, really doubt this is a PR move. There not playing around with this. There offering Pujols a contract on the intent of signing him.

I understand they will get the money back through tickets and connsessions, but will that be enough? Its abit of a gamble...I mean sometimes in Joe robbie thet would only get 12,000 people per game, is it guaranteed they will fill every seat...for every game...? I hope they do, the Marlins must have done some pretty in depth research..

That's not how an offer works. It's not like they give Albert Pujols a physical contract that says 'sign here' and if he signs it's said and done. They verbally make an offer. If Pujols likes it, they will sit down and work out a contract and its stipulations (which might also simply have been listed in the offer). The Marlins can back away at any moment after he accepts the offer. The Marlins are the ones who decide whether or not to turn in the paperwork and make Pujols a Marlin, not Pujols.

 

It's nothing like going to a bidding auction you can't afford. It's like saying you're going to a bidding auction with a lot of money in your hand but no real intention to spend it, and coming home to impress your friends about how you 'lost' a bid on the grand daddy of them all. You weren't ever going to spend that money... God knows you couldn't because it's every last penny you own.
