HR sculpture to be removed?

Featured Replies

They should've painted it dark blue, so that it blended with the seats.

Unless the black is just a primer...

Or the whole outfield a darker green.

Yeah, I don't know why they didn't do that.

Of course, the whole concept of this being "public" in the first place is highly debatable. I know the Marlins, county and supporters on this board will point to the visibility and high-traffic language to justify it as such, but I consider a public installation (be it art, playground, etc) to be accessible by the entire public at any time, without restriction. I seriously doubt at 7 pm on gameday the Marlins would allow you inside the stadium without a ticket to view this and the other "public" art. I doubt they'd let you in on non-gamedays either.

I don't know why they couldn't give us the robotic, leaping Marlins w/ fountain effects like in the original stadium agreement and rendering. Throw in some lasers and fire and it would be pure triumph, not the eyesore we got. Just another example of how this franchise can't get out of its own way in some respects lately.

BREAK THE HR SCULPTURE!!! YEAH BABY!!!

Remember that big 73-foot statue in left-center field at Marlins Park?

It turned out to be a pretty good target during the Marlins' first batting practice session Tuesday night.

Luke Montz, a 28-year old catcher who spent last season in Double A Jacksonvile, was the first to smack it with a home run. He hit it twice. Marlins catcher John Buck drilled it once, as did third baseman Hanley Ramirez.

"You wonder if your going to hear that noise if you hit in in the game," said Montz, who hit 22 homers last season in Double A. "Like Buck said it felt like you hit your dad or grandpa on the arm with a ball."

Just another example of how this franchise can't get out of its own way in some respects lately.

???

Keep in mind that almost the entire stadium and team makeover was unorthodox and a big aesthetic out-of-the-norm "risk." And as the days pass, it seems more and more well-received, from the stadium to the uniform to the fish tanks to even the home run sculpture. And even if the sculpture is a total miss, that's a still a decent percentage.

We know you hate all the new stuff, but that statement just seems unfair.

I know what will get Hawkfan interested in the new uniforms. I'll post it later ;).

If it indeed becomes a problem, the only viable option would be to install a tinted retractable window to cover the sculpture, essentially dimming its characteristics and have it come down during the celebration. Furthermore, a window, especially one made with hurricane proof resistance could help against home run blasts by Giancarlo Stanton who seems like a perfect candidate to take apart the sculpture bit by bit with his majestic power.

I attended the game tonight. The stadium is a freaking gem....

The HR sculpture really enhances the ballpark, especially the space beyond the outfield.

Possibly my favorite aspect of Marlins Park is the fact you can lap the entire concourse while always having a decent view of the field and players. HUGE UPGRADE..... really reminded me of Dodger Stadium in that regard.

On a side note, I must have attended over a hundred Marlins games at the old stadium, but tonight caught my first Major League foul ball sitting in Section 23 of the new stadium.

No, it can't. Visible is visible. You can't stick "public art" in a closet or a hole 99.9% of the time and just trot it out 2 or 3 hours per year.

I mentioned the construction cost earlier, but the more I think about it, the more obvious it becomes that it wasn't a financial thing, it was M-D County. They love their public "art" so much that they want as many of us peons to see it as possible. In fact, they demand it.

The only way to have that thing go down would be to have it collapse onto itself. That would mean far much more $$$, if it was even possible. It's not some toy our parents bought us. Now, the thing is about 75' tall so it can be seen. Add in the base, movable parts to make it retractable, and some type of cover for it and you are up to about a 90' hole in the ground (that's about 9 stories high). Dig a hole in your yard and see how long before you see how far ypu gp before water starts filling it up. That's the reason we don't have basements below our houses here and why parking garages are above ground. That would mean far much more $$$.I stick by my thoughts it is because of financial and engineering restrictions. There was only so much $$$ to work with, so much time to do things, and so much that can actually be done in a safe way. Dosen't matter how many people now say things like they could have done or that. Far as I know, those people aren't engineers, nor were they in on the budget and how it was to be spent. Sounds more like people that just want to complain. Or get something started. Again.

+1

Reminds me of New Comisky In CHI - thay have a great 360 walk track too.

Excellent -

The batters eye looks pretty good in painted in black.

Got MLB 12 The Show last night and hit my first homerun Giancarlo Stanton. Love how the HR feature lights up on that lol. Was deffinately surreal how they made the whole experience.

Now I could really see why they might get rid of it...Wow it looks so colorful in this pic:

It's not going anywhere. If it were a distraction to left-handed hitters LoMo would have tweeted it already. Let's move on.

If anything I would like the walls painted black like the batters eye so the home run thing stands out more. The green pads are fine though.

He had 1 AB last night

That was more of a joke... But seriously, we've got two games under our belts now, and nobody has said a word. And there were some side armers on the mound, too... I highly doubt this will be an issue.

Yea you're right, it's way too subtle as it is now...

I'm pretty sure your incapable of posting without having a smartass tone to everything.

That's because that photo is ridiculously overexposed. Even the grass is neon-green.

Samson just had his weekly segement on the Lebatard show and he said the Hr feature is no way a problem- he's talked to players and it's not even an issue. However, there is a ribbon that has become an issue that will be turned off during innings and turned back on in between.

He also said we have a wider batters eye than the MLB standard.
