Thinking about jumping ship

"Loyalty to any one sports team is hard to justify. Because the players are always changing, the team can move to another city. You're actually rooting for the clothes , when it comes right down to it. You are standing and yelling and cheering for your clothes to beat the clothes from another city. Fans will be so in love with a player, but if he goes to another team, they boo him. This is the same human being in a different shirt they HATE him now. "Boooooo!!!! DIFFERENT SHIRT!!!! Booo!" - Jerry Seinfeld

If its really that simple what players are keeping your attention rather than any other player in the league?

It's called a joke, my friend.

can someone who's a swell writer write up a letter to Loria that I could post on http://facebook.com/sellthemarlins ?

I have a ton of ideas I want to convey but I just can't write them out very well.

sellthemarlins.com is also coming. we need to get this movement going.

the Marlins can and should be a storied franchise. now we're a joke. and the franchise is not going to be in Miami long if it keeps going down this path. he killed the Expos. he's about to kill the Marlins.

before anyone pull the "he got us a stadium" sh*t, he scammed the city of Miami into paying for a stadium, while alienating the a considerable amount of the fan base and putting a terrible product on the field. don't give me that.

He didn't kill the Expos, Montreal did. When he made cash calls and the minority owners said no, he was forced to take the brunt of the losses. When he asked Montreal for a new stadium they shot it down.

He didn't kill the Expos, Montreal did.

He washed his hands of the Expos, which is a completely different animal.

Read this: then tell me who killed the Expos

http://www.sportsbusinessdaily.com/Daily/Issues/2004/11/Issue-46/Franchises/Arbitration-Ruling-Effectively-Ends-Loria-Rico-Suit.aspx

I think I read somewhere that there is a 25 year assurance that the Marlins can't be moved!

On the other topic, I think switching your allegiance to a team because of a couple of lousy seasons is a bit harsh. like other people mentioned, take some time, dont watch as much TV...

Exactly, ever team loses. Unless your a fan of baseball as a sport- i don't see how you should give up on a team so easily.

ask an (ex)Expos fan what they think of Loria. hell, ask any fan of the MLB who isn't a Marlins fan what they think of Loria.

I've read enough about Loria and the Expos.

If you had a favorite restaurant that you loved to eat at and they got bought out by a new management group and changed the menu around, hired a new service staff that sucks, and put out a bad product, would you continue to eat at that restaurant? Not the perfect analogy but that's pretty much how I feel.

That's a horrible analogy, simply because the front office has been the same at this restaurant for 10 years. Not to mention they also made sure the restaurant wasn't moving to a new location in San Antonio when they FINALLY built a new location in a historic location.

But this restaurant has not been very successful for 10 years because of poor management. The restaurant happened to inherit a "best restaurant" award in 2003 because the previous management had put the framework of a pretty decent restaurant in place, but after a few years the restaurants reputation began to slip. And before the restaurant was in a bad location and business was failing, so they worked out a deal to get tax payers to pay for a majority of the new location. But even though the restaurant has a nice new location, the management still sucks and people are starting to realize that a new location is not going to change the fact that the ownership of the restaurant still sucks.

Obviously either you haven't, or your just too stubborn to realize when your wrong. Montreal killed the Expos. They knew Loria was looking for a ticket out of town when the stadium bid failed and the minority owners refuses to kick in money for operating expenses of a team they partly owned.

MLB offered him a chance to jump ship, and he did.

Not to mention the Canadian dollar at the time had a 60 cent exchange rate to the US dollar.

But you loved this restaurant for years before it changed owners twice.

Isn't your loyalty to the team, not the people in it? Isn't it always?

You can always protest by watching a few games at home, and passively paying attention. I've done that with the panthers.

The easiest thing thing to do is to wash your hands of the mess, but you know deep inside you'll keep checking in on the progress.

Besides, I think this year is a aberration. Next year will be better.

I don't know how you could even think about giving up on a team that you have supported for years?!

The current turmoil with the Marlins is absolutely nothing compared to my number one sports team: Glasgow Rangers Football Club. We have been kicked out of the top football (soccer) league in Scotland and now reside in the 4th tier of football and have had to completely rebuild the squad yet despite this, a true fans support will never waver.

Of course it's a joke..... Made by Jerry Seinfeld. When used in the context of your thread it appears as if your using the quote to justify your feelings on the team.

You don't have to justify them to anyone here and i wasn't trying to make It negative to your position just simply responding with a logic question to the quote you posted.

Understatement

It's not just the lousy seasons, either. The Marlins operate in a really bizarre fashion that makes it shameful at times to follow them. It's kind of embarrassing for them to throw all of that money around in the offseason and yet finish in last place. There were a ton of haters in the offseason and the Marlins players and FO basically proved all of the haters to be right.

I'm not jumping ship, but I really wish the organization would be more level-leaded. I suppose I wish more for a total change of ownership.

No, it had nothing to do with the way I feel...just thought it was a funny follow-up quote on poptart's quote.

Yes, I was about to post something similar to this. It's not so much the losing, it's the way organization goes about its business. I wish there was a total change of ownership too, but that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Beinfest is not to blame. Loria's the one who has insisted on spending the least amount possible on the draft for the last 4-5 years. Eventually this becomes a problem. While Beinfest HAS made some bad trades, most GMs have. At this point replacing him with a new guy is the wrong move. We need experience at that position to bring us out of this hole.

I also don't blame Ozzie. He's managed games well, but for the majority of the season he has had nothing to work with. It's also not his fault that Bell fell off a gigantic cliff and cost the team about 10 wins.

Beinfest may not be the absolute worst GM ever, but let's face reality here. The Marlins under Beinfest have not made the postseason since 2003...and the only other team in National League who hasn't made the playoffs since 2003 are the Pittsburgh Pirates. I think that's when you know it's time to change things up. Not to mention he made what may go down as the worst trade in MLB history.

I know this is unpopular but I don't get the importance people place on fandom sometimes...the unconditional love, loyalty etc. Like who you want to like. If you're going to give your money to a team, might as well give it to one you enjoy.

When I proclaim myself a fan of a team, the only thing that can change that is the team ceasing to exist.

I won't quit being a fan. But for the first time in a long time, I find it unlikely that I will renew my subscription to mlb.tv. The Marlins are likely headed for another last place finish next year.

Pretty much how I feel.

Being a Panthers fan during the 12 year period of awfulness, it felt so rewarding to see the team finally start to succeed under a new ownership. I mean, I'm grateful for Loria and Samson for getting us a permanent home but they are awful when it comes to running a professional baseball team. Right now our franchise players are Reyes, Stanton and maybe JJ. I just want some reassurance that we don't lose these players for pennies on the dollar.

I really wish I could say a lot more than I can, but suffice to say I respect your wishes to change teams, and understand it, but me personally I can't do it. I've been through too much with the Marlins for 20 years to change teams.

I have noticed that Loria's biggest supporter hasn't been around too much lately. Interesting.

I'm still a fan but i refuse to renew my season tickets two years ago, after this year, no regrets.
