Polanco signed for 1 year / $2.75 mil

The Marlins plan to sign veteran third baseman Placido Polanco to a one-year, $2.75 million if he passes by Browse to Save">medical tests, an industry source said.

Polanco, who has been bothered by by Browse to Save">back problems in the past year, was among the most accomplished free agent third basemen remaining in a group of players largely past their prime.

Polanco, 37, hit .257 with two homers and 19 RBI in 90 games for the Phillies last season. He hit .277 with five homers and 50 RBI in 2011 and .298 with six and 52 in 2010.

He has won three Gold Gloves, the most recent in 2011. He was voted a starter in the All-Star Game in 2007 and 2011.

Overall, Polanco has hit .299 in 15 seasons with St. Louis, Detroit and Philadelphia.

Other free agent third basemen who were still available, and drew Marlins consideration, include Brandon Inge, Miguel Tejada, by Browse to Save">Matt Downs and Ryan Raburn.

Former big league third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff and ace pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs also will be in the camp for the Marlins, who prefer to use Dobbs as a fill-in and pinch hitter.

Polanco's signing would firm up the Marlins' lineup, unless there are any more trades.

Miami likely will go with Logan Morrison at first base, Donovan Solano at second, Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop, Polanco at third, by Browse to Save">Juan Pierre in left, Justin Ruggiano in center, Giancarlo Stanton in right and Jeff Brantly catching.

ehhhh whatever. could be worse. hopefully he can have a bounceback year and just be a guy in the lineup who gets on base/doesnt strike out.

i wouldnt mind 1 more starting pitcher signing and then just go into spring with this team.

I dont think we will be as bad as people think.

If Palanco bounces back nicely, he can get us something in July. Otherwise, he just covers an organizational gap for the year. Good signing either way.

I like this signing. Polanco haven't showed the power as a 3B, but he has been a good defensive player.

If we try to add the power at corner, then Polanco can move to 2B.

That's not bad.

Yeah but who's Jeff Brantly? Can we officially call our catching tandem Jeff Brantly and Rob Mathis now?

Inge : Mr. Mendoza.

Tejada : Expect more power than Polanco, but too old. Only can play at 3B.

Polanco : Don't expect homer at the corner. Great career average. Has been good at defense both 2B and 3B.

David Samson wrote the article. Anderson Perez proofread it.

It will be weird seeing him in a Marlins uniform

With Pierre and Polanco you can now listen to Hutton and Waltz gush nonstop about veteran leadership.

"In Search of Power, Marlins Sign Polanco"

Sounds like our front office...

At least they weren't stupid and sign Inge or Tejada just for power. It seems like the FO is trying to go with the best option at every position regardless or strengths or weaknesses, and when you're on a budget I agree with that strategy. Get the best players on the field and just see if it works... At the very least, this should be a pretty good defensive ballclub.

If we are talking about a glove-first, light hitting 3b....

...would have preferred Matt Dominguez.

Still a completely moronic fucking move by our terrible front office.
