I think it is completely reasonable to assume the guys we have next year are capable of giving up less than 5 runs a game, and if they can do that I think we will be fine. For the last while now I've seen nothing but acceptance of our doom, or worse expectation's of over 100 losses. I just thought If I showed what we have coming in terms of pitching those who expect the inevitable can explain to me your thoughts.

this isn't me being a dick or anything. this is me acknowledging that the Marlins have a well below average roster. I don't know where you're seeing "pretty good," besides future potential.

I know your point but the fact is that there's also a solid chance that they could suck tremendously. There's nothing that says for certain we'll be "really good." It could happen but most signs are leaning towards not so good at all.

Cishek is about the only one of the group who you can say is probably gonna have a good year. Webb and Dunn *could* figure it out and be better than they were in 2012. Turner should be improved. Besides that the rest are hit or miss for 2013. Not to say they wont be good in the future but as far as this year theres too much uncertainty overall.

If the Marlins starters were to average around 4.50 ERA (all under 5.00), they'd still have one of the worst rotations in the league. The median is around 3.80.

 

I'd like to see the argument for the staff potentially being "really good," which suggests that they'd be better than the median.

I'm really only confident in Turner having the potential to pan out. Eovaldi and Alvarez will most likely suck. Nolasco will be Nolasco. Not even sure who the 5th guy is yet.

Pretty much how I feel. I don't think he will pitch the entire season though.I'm calling Eovaldi with a sub 4 ERA this year. Yup you heard it hear first. He's gonna get that ridiculous walk rate down (to something below the 3+ BB/9 it's at) and his other stats will reflect that.

For what it's worth, Bill James seems to like our pitching staff.

 

He has Nolasco, Turner, and Eovaldi with ERA's under 4, with Eovaldi being the best of the group (projected 3.63 ERA/3.69 FIP).

I'd like to see A.J. Ramos make the roster if he has a nice spring. Chaq Qualls seemed like a decent signing and I am interested to see what Wuertz has left if anything.

I think a lot of people are severely undervaluing Alvarez. This is a guy that has thrown about 200 innings in the majors, had some success, and pitched in the most difficult division in baseball. He may actually have the best pure stuff of anyone in our rotation, and moving to the NL is going to help him tremendously.

And into a pitchers park, as well, will most likely help.
