June 7, 201313 yr His uncle was B.J. Surhoff, the first overall pick in 1985. I already love how he talks about his hitting approach. Is there a link to this, or did they air it at some point during the draft coverage?
June 7, 201313 yr If he can put on another 15 pounds or so and become a 30-40 home run a year player we will really have something here with him. Hopefully he can flash some sweet leather down there at the hot corner with some major league coaching. I hear he can pick it and throw real good. We will have a killer defensive infield with him, hecheverria, Solano and Mathis behind the plate. Just need a first basemen that can field. I hope Morrison can be at least average there.
June 7, 201313 yr Ok now ban him. Anybody who mentions Hechavarria, Solano and Mathis as part of our future lineup is obviously trolling. If he's not...I just feel sorry for him.

Mathis is DEFINITELY not part of the permanent lineup but when he's out there that is one heck of a defensive infield!!!! Hecheverria is definitely par of the future no doubt. Solano also even though most of you are down in him.
June 7, 201313 yr HUGE draft pick for the Marlins. Shoot him to rookie ball after the NCAA season and he'll be competing for the ML roster in the spring. This is an unbelievable break for this franchise that hasn't been able to get many of those as of late...

June 7, 201313 yr Realistically, how much time in the minors will he probably need? 2 years? Maybe not even a full year - depends on how he does.
June 7, 201313 yr And in fact Moran's brother Brian is at AAA with Seattle and is a relief with some pretty damn good numbers. He has 49 strikeouts in 30.1 innings this year. 303 strikeouts in 255.2 innings in his career with a 2.89 ERA. sounds like a closer. That's nice but we already have plans to trade Stanton for John Axford, sorry.
June 7, 201313 yr Author So, who else did we draft? Colby Suggs at 73 has the makings of a closer. Bleacher report compared him to Heath Bell lol. The also said Krook taken at 44 could have been a 1st rounder.
June 7, 201313 yr Skip the Minors and slot him at third tomorrow night. Damn it ... I wanted to say that!

Hechavarria definitely is whether you (we) like it or not. At some point even the front office will realize you can't keep a player with an OPS under .550 in a lineup. His WAR is -1.3. That's just awful. I understand your post was to point out that the front office loves him for little reason, but they'll realize soon enough that they can't keep him on the major league squad when he's god awful.

I'm hoping he improves because I get the feeling that the front office is going to give him the opportunity to do so. There's nobody else in the system (unless if Dietrich moves back to SS one day), and it's not easy to find a SS. I think he'll get at least a couple of years to improve himself. For what it's worth, while I'm not all that optimistic about him, I do think he's better than he's played this year (probably doesn't mean much since he's been absolutely terrible).
June 7, 201313 yr I'd put Moran directly in Jupiter, then two weeks later in Jacksonville and if he's done well by September call him up when the roster expands.
June 7, 201313 yr Poor Coghlan. The man without a position. They stick him in LF, then CF and now Stanton-Ozuna-Yelich plus Marisnik and Ruggiano probably mean there is no future OF spot left for him. Then, they announce he will be taking ground balls at 3B -- and promptly draft a guy who will probably be the 3B of the future and may well be on the 25-man in a matter of months. He's also worked at 1B (but not played there.) Apparently they think he can play anywhere but C or SS, but he doesn't seem to hit well unless he's getting consistent ABs, so future bench utility guy probably doesn't work out. He needs Ruggiano to be traded or failure by Morrison or Dietrich (or someone) to avoid becoming probable trade bait about 6 weeks from now.

It goed to show how bad the Toronto Trade really was when Hechavarria does mot look to be the SS of the future...Beinfest really just got rid of players just to clear the roster and start over. If he would have shopped around we would have gotten amazing talent back
June 7, 201313 yr I think this is just Frisario guessing on Greensboro. But from Meek's comments sounds like performance will dictate how fast he moves through the system. Assuming he signs, Moran likely will start off at low Class A Greensboro. Moran immediately should rank among the Marlins' top prospects, and his path to the big leagues will likely be in his own hands. Miami already has shown that it will promote players quickly. A prime example is Jose Fernandez, who, at the age of 20, opened the 2013 season in the rotation two years after he was the No. 14 overall pick. The organization doesn't have any natural third basemen blocking Moran in the system. "Like all these guys, we didn't know Jose Fernandez would get there that fast," Meek said. "We don't really know. I will say this, we think he's an advanced college bat. Take that for what it's worth. Hopefully, it won't take that long. But you never know. These guys kind of drive their own train. We sure think he would be a little quicker than some of these high school kids."
June 7, 201313 yr Greensboro sounds like a good place to start. Although power numbers in Greensboro seem to be a tad tricky. See Mark Canha.

June 7, 201313 yr He has a pretty good size and can maybe gain about 15 pounds. I think he should be a good power man. We need a power batter other then Stanton.
