May 13, 201412 yr Basically went from having Dwight gooden to Matt morris Get this guy outta here.... Ur not wrong but ur pouring some serious salt on the wounds right now. The injury is bad enough, I'll worry about how good he is whenever he returns.
May 13, 201412 yr Author Basically went from having Dwight gooden to Matt morris Ok, now you're wrong.
May 13, 201412 yr Is anyone else mad about Jennings getting called and Hand getting the spot? Doesn't seem like it.
May 13, 201412 yr This injury is like a slap in the face with how careful they were with jose last season. HEANEY TIME !!!

May 13, 201412 yr I could be wrong but I think what I and most of us wanna know first and foremost beyond anything in the future is , at this point, how are the scales leaning towards serious injury or minor injury. A lot of this points to TJ but there's honestly still a lot of speculation so how possible is it that this could still be just a minor injury? Im being realistic but I don't wanna sleep on TJ prematurely.
May 13, 201412 yr that wasn't my intent, just trying to make my point clearer I know buddy, we're all still in the mourning stages right now, how about a hug ?
May 13, 201412 yr Jim Bowden twitted that he has a tear in the elbow for what it's worth. Oh, fuck. That's pretty much it then.
May 13, 201412 yr I dont think it matters at this point who comes into the rotation (Slowey, Hand, Flynn) you are going to get pretty much the same results
May 13, 201412 yr Is anyone else mad about Jennings getting called and Hand getting the spot? Doesn't seem like it. Considering how bad this Fernandez situation is, you can't really give a fuck about that. I'm just glad that they aren't calling Heaney up prematurely.
May 13, 201412 yr Everything I'm hearing sounds serious. Person I know interning with medical staff won't say anything. Usually they're this secretive only if it's serious (or high profile which is the case with Jose). Sounds like we'll have to live without Jose until Opening Day 2015 to June 2015.
May 13, 201412 yr Considering how bad this Fernandez situation is, you can't really give a f*** about that. I'm just glad that they aren't calling Heaney up prematurely. We have a shot at a playoff spot. Yes the Fernandez thing. It sucks. But Hand in the rotation is terrible.

May 13, 201412 yr Think that would be pretty optimistic. Why would that be optimistic? TJ is usually about 12 month recovery, so June would be about right. Assuming it's TJ
May 13, 201412 yr I always got frustrated over the summer and during spring training when people said that the Marlins had "too much" or a "surplus" of pitching that should be dealt for a bat. This situation is precisely why I get frustrated with that type of thinking. You're just one blown elbow away from debating as to whether or not you have to put Hand or Slowey in the rotation.

Nobody said we had a surplus of MLB-ready arms. We were debating whether or not to put Hand in the rotation in Spring Training as well - because the surplus of arms we have aren't major league ready.
May 13, 201412 yr I actually always felt that the marlins overemphasizing innings pitched over actual pitch counts was a mistake

We were debating whether or not to put Hand in the rotation in Spring Training as well - because the surplus of arms we have aren't major league ready. I recall differently. People were keeping in mind the fact that Heaney wouldn't be ready right away, but expected him to be up at some point and that the Marlins wouldn't have room. Either way, people drastically overstated how expendable the Marlins' young pitching was.
May 13, 201412 yr The issue was we had holes at 1B, 2B, 3B, and C at the start of the season. That's a lot of positions, and at the start of the offseason it felt like we needed to trade one of our pitchers to fix those spots. McGehee has been quite the diamond in the rough, Garrett Jones, while not perfect, has done a decent job, Dietrich has stepped up imo, and Salty was signed and has performed at the level of his contract (and beyond). There's a damn good reason many of us were talking about trading starting pitching. We've just made some good signings this offseason that helped mask those issues a little bit.
May 13, 201412 yr Oh and ah shit. Everybody is gonna have to step up now in the rotation. 20-18. I still think this team can surprise people, but with no Jose--if he is out for the season--might only be a bit better than last year. Maybe 70 wins without Jose? Esp if team continues to suck on the road.

Offensive holes are easier and cheaper to fill than holes in starting pitching. The fact that many of those acquired pieces seem to be doing OK so far is evidence of that and precisely why you don't deal a young starter.
