6/20 Post Game

Can a finish like today's game be a momentum changer or do we have to twiddle our thumbs more, could be another frustrating loss.

I've only just got home and all I can say is... Wow, I am just... wow.... I can't believe it... it's incredible... Polly has finally got an avatar!

Ozuna did okay too.

I had to leave in the top of the 7th. Sitting at the dinner table I saw a runner on third with 1 out and a 3-2 then saw 3 outs and the score still 3-2 and nearly freaked.

Alvarez was solid again but our offense coughed up 3 chances to add on runs which very nearly cost us. I have been extremely disappointed with Ozuna's at bats lately but thank god for that throw at a time when we are struggling.

Good point. In Cishek's last 9 innings he's given up 0 ER, 4 hits, 2 BB and only struck out 11. Something must be seriously wrong with him.

Bring back Juan Carlos Nunez/Leo Oviedo whatever his name was and his weak-ass changeup

I credit Jon Rauch.

Ozuna has always had a great arm, but he was throwing 200-250' sliders or sinkers that would wind up off-line or dive and bounce. Rauch is the guy who taught him how to throw it perfectly straight last year.

As Ozuna said "I saw the difference right away. The ball went straight, straight, straight -- no movement."

THROWING TIP

Jon Rauch didn’t leave much of a lasting impression as a reliever during his brief and largely forgettable stay with the Marlins. But the tall and tattooed Rauch might have made a significant contribution in a way that went unnoticed.

Marcell Ozuna said it was Rauch who improved his throwing accuracy by changing the way the outfielder grips the ball. Rauch told Ozuna he would achieve better results if he threw a two-seamer with the palm of his hand “behind the seams. That slight adjustment flattened Ozuna’s throws.

“The ball was diving before, Ozuna said. “Jon Rauch told me to grab the ball with the seams behind. I saw the difference right away. The ball went straight, straight, straight — no movement.

Ozuna recorded his eighth outfield assist on Tuesday when he threw out the Braves’ Chris Johnson at the plate. Only Arizona’s Gerardo Parra and Colorado’s Carlos Gonzalez — with nine each — have more outfield assists.

Rauch isn’t the only person Ozuna credits with helping him defensively and with throwing, in particular. He said Marlins minor-league outfield coordinator Tarrik Brock instilled in him the need to always hit the cutoff man, and Marlins front office assistant and Hall of Fame outfielder Andre Dawsonimproved his footwork.

“Before, I made a lot of mistakes when I threw because I threw high, and the ball had a lot of movement, Ozuna said. “I worked on that during the offseason in winter ball, and then Rauch told me how to grip the ball to make it flat.

Hmm. Original link works fine for me. Same one I used many months ago when commenting on the real contribution Rauch made to this team in the time he was here. Couldn't pitch worth a damn, but as an informal outfield throwing coach he was magic.

Good thing Ozuna talked to him about throwing when he did, Rauch was only here for a month and a half. I wonder if Ozuna and/or the team/coaching staff has communicated this important little tidbit to the rest of the OFers. You would think/hope so. Pretty likely considering that the Marlins rank near the top in outfield assists. But, Tommy and Rich have never mentioned it.

In any case, thank you Jon Rauch.

Gregg did not have a terrible outing if you actually watched the game. He had several strikes that were not called, had to pitch around that, and the only ball that was hit square was Wright's single up the middle.

I am not a fan of Kevin Gregg at all, but sometimes you have to be fair, guys.
