Haren on the Marlins

Featured Replies

Well said and I don't think anyone can take offense to this quote and those that should (the FO) don't care enough to even read like us uneducated folks.

wtf were they supposed to do exactly? Hold onto players whom are leaving for FA (Haren and Latos) continue playing player whom arent useful at all (Salty, Morse) and trade a struggling, ineffective closer. Moving expiring contracts doesn't constitute the term "blowing up the team" its the reason why folks are laughing at the Padres front office for not moving those expiring contracts.

yeah i kinda have mixed feelings on those comments.  "blowing up the team" wasn't exactly what happened since the ones they got rid of were either shitty or were gone at the end of this year anyway.  it wasn't like they traded away yelich, stanton, gordon, fernandez, ramos, or capps.  so i'm not sure i get what his angle is - the part about going into the seasons with other expectations is 100% accurate (for example the Phillies knew they'd be awful this year i'm sure)  and from that standpoint he has a valid point.

also, with what's left who qualifies as "the older players" now? lol  Ichiro?

A lot of bitches on this team. Seriously. I get that the front office isn't good, but they just did what every other front office in baseball would do in terms of selling players on a losing team.

If the players don't like it, they have no one to blame but themselves.

Don't know how he can call that blowing up the team. I liked Dan and he performed and got along with guys but that was a dick thing to say.

Secondly, I was also posted at Stanton saying simply "it is what it is" and that he was surprised by some of the moves. Are you fucking kidding me?

No.  They were supposed to wait for a good offer.  If one wasn't forthcoming, hold on to Haren and Latos and tender a lowball one year contract and allow them to go to another team as a free agent.  Then the Marlins wind up getting a first round or at worst a second round pick.  I'm fairly certain that this approach would have yielded a better return.  Not to mention that they wouldn't have traded away their competitive balance pick in the process.

Haren was trading right before the deadline. So I'm sure they tried to hamstring a good deal.  However, teams knew that he was going to be traded and stood pat on that, making it hard to get  more than fair value.

The Latos trade is in question. I will hold my judgment on that till next offseason. they hopefully will use that money for key FA.  Which would be better than future prospects for Latos.

You can't tender a lowball offer, the qualifying offer is far from cheap and there's a decent chance Latos would have accepted the offer.

Front office should make better evaluations of players tbh.

things like this wouldn't happen constantly with better evaluations.

Latos had a career 3.43 ERA, 3.40 FIP and was 26 at the time of the trade.

Morse was coming off a season where he OPSed .811 and owns a solid career OPS of .794.

Haren did well here.

What exactly was wrong with the way the Marlins evaluated things this past winter?

Latos velocity had a huge dip in 2014... Morse was coming off of a career year.... Regardless, i thought both moves were fine tbh. They probably should have let morse stick it out at 1st rather than giving up a draft pick and making fun of their few uneducated fans

I guess I'm actually agreeing with you Valid is my point. The off season moves were fine. I really think they gave up on morse too soon and at the cost of too much. Unless they have an actual plan in place (they dont) then I really dont see the point. It's probably because I only have a BA from UF is why I can't understand what they're doing

Yeah I know Latos had the dip in velocity and had some health concerns, but I was perfectly okay with the deal because it wasn't like we gave up much for him, and he is a legitimate No. 2 when he is right. I think he was worth the risk. Unfortunately, things just didn't pan out across the board.

Latos pitched 6 innings and gave up one hit in his dodger debut vs. The angels. He couldnt get out of the first inning vs. Atlanta in his debut for us. The nerve of this fucking guy. He really is a douche

Blowing up the team?   LOL this wasn't even a single firecracker...he should review the history of the team he plays for...we are the Marlins!

hes not a douche. He's been pitching much better of late. Which makes the lousy deal that much more frustrating.

and would that have been the worst thing?  Most of the posters here believe that the 2015 team, if healthy, would've had a great chance to make the playoffs. If Latos were to accept a short term deal for 10 mill/1 yr for 2016, we wouldn't be in such dire straits. If he takes a long term deal with another team, we wind up with a high draft pick. Win-win.

The qualifying offer is not 1 year/ 10 mil.  It was $15.3 MM last year and I assume is higher this coming off-season.
