Marlins hire Mattingly

Featured Replies

There is truth to what was said, that manager hasnt been the biggest problem and it wont be going forward.

The utter failure of the front office to evaluate talent and to procure good talent at the amateur levels is the biggest problem.  Its why I truly cannot imagine why those morons Hill and Jennings still have jobs.  It's a results oriented world and if Loria would put his fat eyes on something not named the big league club he would have learned this years ago.  But yet he continues to blame the wrong people year after year.  Its mind boggling.

So Admin, what will Mattingly bring talent wise (on the field) ? Who in the "Doyers" farm system will he believe in ?

I have no idea if Mattingly is a good manager.  Lots of people liked what he brought in LA and lots of people hated his in game decision making.  Overall, its most likely a meaningless hire.  The more important hire should have been revamping the entire front office, scouting, and player development system.  But alas, DID YOU SEE US IN SEPTEMBER WE WERE INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!! Forget that we were 30 games under before september, the rest of the season is just an outlier, we are a great team.

This team continues to hold itself back.  The manager isn't a problem.  We do this every two years.  "We need someone with fire! No, we need a players coach now"  Its absurd.  Our scouting is awful, our front office decision making is awful, and we have no depth in the organization player wise.  The fact that Loria thinks every single time we change managers that it is gonna be some groundbreaking culture change is pathetic. It boggles my mind that he had enough business sense to become a huge multimillionaire but can't seem to figure this out.  Once again this is a nothing move that will be reversed when Mattingly is fired because he inevitably doesnt succeed to Loria's ridiculous standards solely because of Loria's complete ignorance for the real problem in this organization.

8 managers since 2003.  8 fucking managers. Yet we still change managers all the time as if its a manager issue and not the fact that we have some of the worst scouting, player development, and front office in all of baseball.  This organization is mind boggling.

Again, I like Mattingly, I don't mind the hire.  But this organization is rinse repeat rinse repeat and it is incredible that it hasn't figured out what the real problem is.   The fact that we are letting a decent september for a team that was at one point close to 30 games under .500 cloud our decision making all around the organization has to be one of the most symbolic "Marlins things" we have done in the last 13 years since the world series.  Pathetic. Stupid.  Marlins.

sure but they did get Benedict as VP of pitching. That's a pretty big step in the right direction imo

Mattingly will be involved in the roster decisions but just a voice in a very crowded room. When it comes to pitchers, Benedict will have the loudest voice.

Too soon to know if Mattingly's hiring opens up Loria's mind as far as increasing payroll somewhat? At least enough to acquire some solid starting pitching?

Too early to know. I doubt it'd go up significantly but then again Loria could wake up tomorrow morning and decide to spend wildly.

I consider it splash of sorts. They could of just said screw it, let 2016 sink as we will hire Bo Porter.

I don't even need it to go up "significantly" I think it's just obvious we can't get the SP upgrades we need if payroll stays the same.

Agreed, hopefully Loria will feel the same way for long enough that they can sign contracts before he changes his mind.

Well until more talent arrives this doesn't really excite - it's more like re-arranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. If Loria doesn't get that it's as another poster said, "rinse & repeat"

Cool - I'm good with it.  Most managers are whatever.  He's probably whatever.  We'll complain about some bullpen moves and get on with it.  Put a good face on the team & with the media.  Keep everyone happy.  Any *clubhouse problem* guys (if that was an actual thing) seem to have moved on anyway.  Maybe Loria will be so giddy that he landed a Yankee guy that he'll feel like he should raise payroll along with it.

It is kind of bad practice to hire him while the World Series is still going on.

That's why they didn't. These are "rumors", they didn't officially confirm anything. Same deal as Bud Black in DC but keep on hating, hater.

The 2016 Miami Marlins Story!!! Starring: Don Mattingly as himself, Monty Burns as Jeffrey Loria and Waylon Smithers as Samson.... special appearances by Lenny and Carl as DJ and Hill

Didn't the Marlins "trade" for Ozzie Guillen when the WS was still going on? There have been so many managerial changes I might have gotten some confused.
