He knows a little too much about baseball for that to be true...I think.

I don't think he does. With the Dodgers, he would regularly bench lefty hitters against lefty starters even if their splits showed they were just as good. Today was an example the other way around. Odubel Herrera has basically no platoon split, yet Mattingly put Breslow in because Herrera bats left handed. Didn't matter that the batter would be no worse off based on real and readily available stats. "The Book" says lefties must face lefties!

Stop blaming Barraclough.

Dude was basically perfect until tonight. And again, he wasn't given an opportunity to get out of the inning. It was Breslow who ultimately fucked it up. Blanco had a great AB against him (Klaw).

Barraclough has no business being DFA'd. He's been awesome, and I'll take my chances with Barraclough-Phelps-Ramos. That's worked for us so far this year. It's when Mattingly decides to go with some of the other losers that the bullpen fucks it up. Breslow...and before him, Narveson, McGowan & Ege. Time for Breslow to get the same treatment as the other Three Stooges.

Can't believe I'm saying this but I miss Mike Dunn so much.

Also, this is a game we win if Carter Capps isn't out for the year. :(

On Jeff Connie bobble head night no less.

That's not true to be fair. At least I don't think it is. Any examples? I know he liked to bench Ethier against lefties, but Ethier wasn't (isn't) a good hitter against lefties.

Aside from that, his legit lefty hitter was Adrian Gonzalez and he played every day.

YungJoc, while awful overall in the second half, had very slight platoon splits. He rarely played against lefties, tough ones or De La Rosa ones.

Actually, not true. Joc did have a platoon split.

Joc last year

vs. R: .361 .OBP, 784 .OPS, 26.8 K%

vs. L: .295 .OBP, .691 .OPS, 37.2 K%

There's definitely a differential there. Joc was above average against righties and pretty terrible against lefties. Also, I believe the platoon was with Kike Hernandez, no? Kike hits lefties very well. That's not bad managing.

Honestly, it's sort of tough to blame Mattingly for all of this because the bullpen has been overworked too with the lack of innings from starters/a lot of close wins recently, but it's just that he shouldn't use Breslow in a close game ever.

The front office maybe deserves more blame for not acquiring a better lefty in the offseason too. Didn't really give Mattingly much to work with.

But yeah, his platoons with the Dodgers don't seem bad. And he really hasn't been bad with that here either. He definitely seems to have a better understanding of them than past recent managers we've had imo.

The reasons why this team lost are the reasons why the winning streak meant nothing and the Marlins won't be within 10 games of a WC spot

Well, this is really silly.

This game was lost when Donnie motioned for Breslow to come in.  The two baserunners left on by Bearclaw were going to score, that's the Breslow track record and you knew probably one of his own would score too. When Breslow comes on with runners on he gives up hits in bunches.

Just got back from the game. That long ride sucks after a loss. This one hurt. DFA Breslow.

Johnson should have caught that ball regardless.

Real major leaguers catch that ball.

Real 9 year olds on a 10U travel baseball team catch that ball.

Most MLB teams have suspect middle relievers.  You HAVE to catch that ball at first base.

Bottom line. Phillies got lucky. We win tomorrow, I'm positive. Then Brewers come in to town and we get another sweep. Keep the snowball rolling.

Everyone take a step back and relax. We've won 10 of 12. Blown games happen.

Exactly. It's baseball. If we were middling through the pack playing so so baseball then I'd be off the wall upset. Just try to win the next game. Phillies want to win too and it shows. A real tough team over there.

Guys, Breslow sucks but if Johnson doesn't drop that ball, Phillies don't take the lead. Also if Barraclough didn't struggle Breslow doesn't even come in the game. Not blaming Kyle because he's been awesome, barely blaming Johnson because it was just an error, but to absolutely put this all on Breslow is a stretch. If Johnson didn't drop the ball, we could have still won despite Breslow sucking. And lastly, no one on that team is still thinking about this loss, they're confident as shit right now. With all this team has been through they're not pouting after losing their second game in the last two weeks. Stop worrying and just watch today's game.

I almost prefer a loss sprinkled here and there, so it's not about the winning streak. We can keep winning without the pressure of keeping a streak alive

Yep exactly. Just go 4-2, 5-2 every week and it will be all good.
