June 27, 201610 yr Something to keep in mind: When Chapman first became available, Loria really, really wanted him.
June 27, 201610 yr Something to keep in mind: When Chapman first became available, Loria really, really wanted him. Yup I remember it was between Miami and the Reds, but the Marlins didn't view him as a starter and weren't willing to pay the asking price as a reliever
June 27, 201610 yr We should send a package of minor leaguers, starting with Kolek, to the Padres for Rodney and Pomeranz. Then we would be set. Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app

Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app Wouldn't say we would be set. We wouldn't have a reliable lefty in the pen whatsoever. Unless they turn Nicolino into a reliever which hypothetically wouldn't happen until September.
June 27, 201610 yr We have to be realistic. Our minor league system is depleted. If we want to add a starter and reliever, our best bet is to get both in the same trade - Pomeranz and Rodney. I agree we could use another lefty in the pen, but hopefully Dunn can be serviceable. Maybe Jarlin Garcia or Nicolino could pitch in the pen. Baraclough, phelps, Rodney and Ramos would give us a great pen, regardless of them all being righties. Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app

If there's one thing that I do like about the pen, is for the most part, they are high strike out guys which allows them to work for an entire inning rather than based off match ups. 2016 Rodney fits that mold as well. Even phelps has shown he can be effective against lefties when he throws that 2 seamer at their shoulder and freezes them.
June 27, 201610 yr I really like the idea of getting Pomeranz and Rodney in a deal together but it is going to take more than Kolek and other C level prospects. Wittgren might need to be dangled in a trade or Ellington.
June 27, 201610 yr Agreed. But Pomeranz is under control for a few years and even Rodney is controlled next year - cheap. So neither is just a rental. Unfortunately, a lot of teams could use these players. We may have to settle for a cheap, lefty specialist out of the pen and a guy like Bud Norris, who would be a pure rental. And I wouldn't be too upset with Bud and a situational lefty. Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app

Wittgren might need to be dangled in a trade or Ellington. I don't think Wittgren and Ellington have much value. They do to us because they have been somewhat effective and they are cheap but they aren't big time prospects and they both have question marks. Wittgren's stuff isn't great and Ellington has always had control issues.
June 27, 201610 yr True. But there is something to be said about seeing a player have success in the majors, so both players are trending up. I especially think Ellington is a guy teams would want because his fastball and stuff are there. Anyone throwing 100 for strikes against the Cubs lineup will get some attention. June 27, 201610 yr Because Rodney and Pomeranz have control beyond this year drives up the asking price especially for Pomeranz. I just don't see anyone outside of our starting line up getting it done right now. Because even the money owed to Rodney is little, under $2 million for sure.

I just don't see anyone outside of our starting line up getting it done right now. Because even the money owed to Rodney is little, under $2 million for sure. Honestly, I like our bullpen. I would concentrate on the rotation if I was the front office. Assuming that Bearclaw, Phelps, and Ramos stay healthy, the back end of the bullpen should be fine. Phelps might be the only one of the three that might not be able to sustain his success. In that case maybe Ellington or Wittgren could step up. We also have Lazo as a lefty option in AAA and Ogando is also rehabbing. We have no ready options for SP in the minors.
June 27, 201610 yr Kris Bryant says our bullpen is the best they've faced all season so there's that. Replace Dunn and I'm happy.

I like our bullpen too but you can't keep depleting it. This is a long season. Although we have done a great job help is needed. Right now our starters are averaging pretty much 6 innings although Jose has gone 7 his last 3 starts off hand. Wittgren has been nice, and so has McGowan and Ellington. I'd just love another arm. But you are absolutely right the main focus is start pitching with bullpen help right now being secondary. I would also like the Marlins to get a lefty masher to put at 1B. Chris Johnson isn't cutting it.
June 27, 201610 yr Uh, don't we have that in Bour? Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app
June 27, 201610 yr Uh, don't we have that in Bour? Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app Sorry to clarify I meant someone that can consistently hit LHP, hence why I mentioned Johnson. Platoon the guy with Bour to give us better consistency. Rojas could take over once Dee comes back. That is an option.
June 27, 201610 yr Author Uh, don't we have that in Bour? Sent from my iPhone using MarlinsBaseball.com mobile app He smashes righties, his saying we should get someone that can hit lefties, like Chris "I take baseball way too seriously" Johnson was supposed to do

Rojas could take over once Dee comes back. That is an option. Tomas Tellis can play 1st base and is hitting lefties really well in AAA. Plus he is also a catcher. Can't hurt to give him a shot. Johnson is so expendable! Just DFA his ass.
June 27, 201610 yr It would also be nice to upgrade Gillespie. In the case that Ichiro regresses some, Gillespie/that roster spot is going to need to step up to cover that loss in production.
June 27, 201610 yr Guys Kolek just had TJ surgery and has sucked so far. Don't put him in any trade proposals.

June 27, 201610 yr The Marlins are known to be exploring the relief pitching market, and they’ve had internal discussions about both the Yankees’ Aroldis Chapman and the Padres’Fernando Rodney, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney (in his latest subscription-only column). It isn’t known if these discussions reflect genuine interest, as teams routinely go over many options in the leadup to the trade deadline.
June 27, 201610 yr Getting a Mark Reynolds-type bat to replace Johnson would be ideal. I also do like what Rojas has been doing at the plate. No power, but pretty good at bats. The team's plan is to have Bour develop against lefties. He had a really nice hit against a lefty specialist over the weekend. It's fun to speculate, and if this were a fantasy baseball team, upgrading Johnson, Cole and even Mathis along with adding a starter and reliever would be the plan. But, not all of that will happen. I think we all agree that what we really need is a starter, even a rental veteran like Bud Norris. Any other upgrades would come much later and would be gravy. June 27, 201610 yr May as well trade for sabathia and Chapman if we're all in. Probably wouldn't take much prospect wise to get both and take on sabathia's 2017 contract but that doesn't seem likely
