He had to have already seen the direction the team is going in, if I were him I’d be pumped. He himself was just a prospect a couple years back and look at him now. This team has a real chance to be a lot better than the core we had going anyway. 

 

I don’t really see the logic in trading a top Catcher for another outfielder (no matter how good he might end up being). It’s a lot easier to find a producing outfielder down the line via free agency or trade than replacing J.T....they finally have a stud catcher, I don’t want to go back to the Ronnie Paulino/Raul Castro days. 

 

 

The Latos and Cashner trade are great examples of something Jeter has to do differently than Loria did. And that's the knee jerk decision to give up prospects too early in the process and for the wrong guys. 

 

For example, though it's an exaggerated example... imagine Loria was doing this current rebuild the exact same way (just for the sake of my analogy), Loria would trade away Brinson at the 2018 trade deadline to get RA Dickey.

Agreed that Loria likely said “go get someone.” My problem is that Hill evaluated Cashner as the best guy for the job at the deadline. While it likely wouldn’t have mattered, Ervin Santana was the better player. Wasn’t really close

I agree. The proposed package from Rosenthal with Michael Taylor would be a joke as well. Either hold out for the proper prospects and keep JT. He will get over it.. eventually.

I don't want him. He's already earning in the millions and he's a FA in 2021, he doesn't fit the timeline for this team well.

If he is the 3rd or 4th player in a deal (as I assume it will be multiple players as Robles will never happen without the Marlins adding something which is reasonable as Realmuto isn't worth a top 5-8 prospect in baseball), he could be a smart acquisition. 

 

He had a 3.1 WAR last year, turns 27 right before the season, makes $2.8 million, and has 3 years of control. He's also kind of perfect for the Marlins April-July for him to man the OF with Dietrich, Ortega, Van Slyke, etc. until Brinson is up in May, and Sierra, and B. Lee whenever over the summer. He could be a good trade chip at the deadline for someone looking for a cheaper outfielder who can start. And if last year was for real (he certainly overachieved a bit with a .363 BABIP), the Marlins would probably win the trade big assuming the get 2-3 of their better prospects (Soto, Kieboom, Fedde, Garcia, etc.).

 

Just saying for the sake of debate, Taylor isn't necessarily a hard no for me, but he would have to be the 3rd or 4th piece.

Michael Taylor is both not that good of a player nor does he make sense for the marlins long term plans.  You get either Robles (unlikely) or Soto (love his game) or you dont trade with them.  Soto, Kieboom, lesser catcher prospect, and lower level pitcher for Realmuto and Barraclough and you pull the trigger immediately.

 

 

Realmuto's five tools and durability are hugely valuable but I wouldn't close my eyes at an offer of four of Washington's top ten beyond Robles and Soto. A SS like Kieboom would be a huge asset for a team starved at that position. Antuna is also a five tool infield prospect and only 18.

Because he isn't a normal teams top prospect. He is an all baseball super elite prospect with one of the highest ceilings in the game, who is controlled for 6+ years if the Nationals are smart with his service time. Realmuto has 3 years of control left, and while he is wonderful, no one is confusing him with Buster Posey. He's really good, he's not elite.

 

Are you trading a M. Cabrera, Fernandez, Yelich, or Stanton level prospect in their last year in the minors for a guy like Realmuto? Maybe Robles doesn't pan out, but that is the level of prospect the Nationals would be trading. Someone with a much higher ceiling than Realmuto. Personally, I don't think that's worth Realmuto producing right now (and I like Realmuto and wish they would sign him still for 5 seasons). Of course, Hermida was also that level of prospect and we know what happened there, but there is the risk/reward component involved and it would be very risky for them to trade the Marlins a young Andrew McCutchen. Marlins hater Keith Law would give the Marlins an A+ if they pulled it off for Realmuto. I bet the Nationals would get mostly panned.

 

I'd try to entice them by throwing in Barraclough and swapping Ziegler/Wieters (which lowers the Nats payroll $1.5), but I can't see them trading a guy with an all baseball ceiling for JT. Hopefully I am wrong. You hold out for Soto and a collection of Kieboom/Fedde/Garcia/Antuna/Romero/Crowe/Read/Severino, or you don't move him to them. Ideally, someone else jumps in with a better pitcher for the Marlins because the Marlins need a lot more pitching.

 

 

The Diamondbacks are also in on JT.  Would a package of Pavin Smith and Duplantier be enough? Maybe a lower level throw in or two?  Would that be better than the Nats packages without Robles or Soto?

I don't think it would be horrible. I know Duplantier was a little old for his league but he demolished the hitters there in both low A and A+ ball.  1.39 ERA 136 IP and 165 K to just 42 BB.  His WHIP was 0.98.  He has front of the rotation stuff from what I have read.  Also, Smith had a .401 OBP and a .318 BA.  He was a first round pick last year and according to scouting reports his defense is above average.  He should also hit for power as he matures.  

 

The Nationals other package might still be better but I think it's far from a horrible return.  Of course, I could be wrong.  Lol

I think there is a deal to be made somewhere involving Soto, Kieboom, another prospect, and taking either some or all of Weiters salary back.  Weiters makes sense for us for multiple reasons.  If it allows us to get them to move Soto, that would be worth it, on top of the fact that Wieters is still a good baseball player despite not having a good year last year.  If he bounces back, you maybe have a stop gap catcher for a year and a trade chip at the deadline at a valuable position, and if he doesnt hes a free agent next year.

Id much prefer Robles or Soto obviously, but i dont think that is an awful return like you think.  Duplantier had an incredible year last year, and Pavin Smith is a pure hitting 1b which is a position we need.  I'd like 2 other really solid prospects though if that is going to be the lead prospects for JT.

 

 

He said just those two in the return. He didn’t say as part of a package. That could of course change things. With just those two I agree with the eagle.
