March 25, 20197 yr Oh. Well I can only assume that they tried to trade him but couldn't but still didnt have to release him... I think u need a guy like him to eat innings at the least.. our young starters are good but u can't always count only on them for a whole season. Eventually they struggle or get hurt, u need guys like Straily to manage the workload. I'm fine with it but I would have waived Chen instead and put Straily in the Pen. Whatever, let the kids play. I like it.

March 26, 20197 yr Mike Hill's words on this just make it sound like they thought they were gonna need him (which is why he was tendered) but with the young guys exceeding expectations in spring training they just decided Straily wasn't needed anymore so they're moving forward with the future. I disagree with doing this now but for those wondering that's the logic they're going with. So they basically waste the limited money they do spend and get nothing in return? Utterly baffling as to their actions. This and dumping Wittgren were just inexcusable for a team promoting their rebuild. At least keep him around for the first half - because injuries can and will happen. If there are STILL no suitors then you can jettison him since at least you got some playing time for the money you spent and possibly found a trade partner during that time. It literally would not have hurt the club one bit had he stayed.
March 26, 20197 yr In 2017 we traded David Phelps and received, among others, Pablo Lopez. How is it possible that we can get nothing at all in return for Straily (and Derek Dietrich, for that matter)? Phelps may be more versatile than Straily, but Straily is a legit major league starter.

Probably is two fold- teams didn't want to risk paying him the 5MM, and its possible... just maybe... the Marlins did this as a favor / courtesy since he was blindsided by this AND is a MLB vet. Kind of a "Hey, I know its shitty this is happening- but were going to outright release you so you can go where ever YOU want to go... good luck man, knock em dead. Except against us". Kind of thing. Straily was a good soldier last year and all spring, I can really see his outright release as a respect for a veteran thing. Which is good, considering the reputation Jeter has in baseball right now as being "too smug, too good for us".

Somehow, I don't think that releasing Straily three days before the season starts is perceived as a "good thing" to do to a loyal veteran. Teams have their rotations set and he is not on an opening day roster. If they were going to do the "respect for a veteran thing", they should have released him a week or two before.
