No, I think he really plans to go with whoever is the best matchup in the seventh, eight and ninth rather than holding a guy back so he can pitch the 9th.

So..  Matt Barnes?

Or maybe Skip believes in the idea of going with the best matchup

And make pitching changes in the "save" situation, the most stupid thing in baseball is to keep your underperformed pitcher on the mound until he screws up the game just because he's the CLOSER.

Yep or to not bring your "closer" in when the other team has their best guys coming up in the 7th because he is the "closer". An antiquated idea that I believe Skip really does intend on changing up.

Good post, TM.

Glad Mattingly is out of the decision-making process here. I'm sure he's a great guy and I wish him well but man so many Mattinglosses.

I know it's just ST games, but 13 strikeouts in one game would make you worry about this lineup, time to make a final big move before opening day ?

Worrying about the upcoming Marlins season during Spring training, is pretty useless to be honest.

If you recall just two years ago in Spring Training 2021 the Marlins finished 14-5 with the best record in the Grapefruit League but finished the regular season 67-95.

Only real time the Pre-season really predicted the regular season success was in 1997 Marlins who finished 25-6, but then again it was the 1997 Marlins with that roster so that’s an exception to all the other seasons. But yeah, some years ago I used to really get too emotionally involved in Spring training wins and losses, thinking it was going to predict how the Marlins did in the regular season. As I got older and a little wiser I realized that no matter how good or bad they did in Spring training they probably aren’t going to have a winning record in the regular season anyways. 😂

Worried about what?  This team is going to be in fourth place at best.  There are no expectations..........

I agree that spring training success doesn’t mean much, but what about spring training struggles? I’m admittedly a bit nervous considering offense is a concern, and they’ve been pretty poor offensively so far.

If I'm not going to count success, I'm not going to count struggles either.

Doesn’t really matter either.

Case in point the LA Dodgers finished the 2022 Spring Training with a 5-9 record and second to last place in the Cactus League and second to last out all of all MLB teams in team Batting AVG.

They finished the regular season 111-51. 😂

But the real reason why Spring training performances doesn’t really matter to me is that we aren’t seeing the regular Marlins starting roster playing for 9 innings a game. So maybe during spring training we might for example see the Marlins score a bunch of runs and win some games but maybe some of the  players who are scoring those runs might be in AA/AAA all of 2023 and on the same note maybe some of the players striking out and getting out a lot won’t be starters in the regular season.

Conversely let’s say a MiLB Marlins pitcher gives up a bunch of runs in a spring training game, but that pitcher won’t be on the MLB team in 2023.

Also let’s say the Marlins score a bunch of runs one game against another teams A or AA pitcher, for example. Still not the best prediction of regular season performance.

So Spring training is really just a warm up for April to be honest. To me April seems like the real Spring Training. 😂

Usually by the end of April after a solid 3-4 weeks of seeing the Marlins regular starting lineup and rotation playing everyday. That’s usually a better barometer of how the rest of the season will go more or less. And based on my experience on this forum the past couple of seasons, usually it’s by the second week of April that all the “Season is over” posts start popping up. 😂😂😂😂😂

But until then, I don’t really care about any Spring training record or performance or strikeouts per game or ERA or none of that. Of course I would like to see the Marlins win some more games just for entertainment purposes, but I’m more concerned about making sure the starters get warmed up and conditioned for the regular season. It’s a long season coming up, so hopefully guys like Jazz and Luzardo can stay healthy for most of it.

The way I see spring training is as just that, training. If a player is working with a batting coach to improve their hacks on breaking balls, I'd expect them to let a fastball they otherwise would swing at go, for example. I'm sure there are many cases of players tweaking or experimenting. I think they keep a schedule and show the games as a way to make a little cash on the side, but I honestly wouldn't consider them games or keep record.

I think it's also why you see random minor leaguers going HAM. They're trying to impress while everyone else is tweaking. Núñez's 10 HR as an example.
