April 19, 200620 yr I mean seriously. He looks absolutely terrible at the plate right now and even that much worse against lefties. Obviously I'm not suggesting we bench him or even put him on waivers, just wanted to get a general feel from everyone. I guess we could see Wes Helms get a few more starts vs lefties soon
April 19, 200620 yr I am very worried. While I never been high on Jacobs, I never thought he will be this bad. Yes it is still early but he looks overmatched at the plate(in almost every at-bat), he is a below average defender, and a poor athelete on top of that. I see Jason Stokes or J.T Restko as a better long term option at 1B. Just my opinion but I think Jacobs should continue to get work in at catcher. After all, he played that position for over 3-4 years in the minors I believe.
April 19, 200620 yr I'm not too worried, just seems like hes doing the all or nothing. When he makes contact its going a mile other then that hes trying to hit everything 500 ft and pulling off his swing too much. He just has to realize that we need to win with him just getting the base hit or getting a walk and HR is fine as long as he doesnt push for it.
April 19, 200620 yr he's about the biggest clutz I've ever seen... can't slide, balls hit him in the face, can't catch a pop up near the pitching mound without falling down... hitting... not worried yet... give him time.

He was never going to be a superstar, and was never the centerpiece in the Mets trade despite whatever nonsense some people on this board state. I'm still hoping he can settle into a .270/.350/.450 kind of guy, but he does look awful. I wouldn't be shocked if longterm Willingham takes over 1B, or someone in the Harvey/Restko/McCann family is given a shot. Jacobs kind of reminds me of Russel Branyan type player. Lot's of power and is useful in a bench situation, but just not what you're looking for in a starter. I disagree on him being moved back to catcher though. He is terrible behind the place, and not worth wasting his or our time. His future is at 1B or a DH. He just needs to get his confidence, or whatever, back and hit the ball.
April 19, 200620 yr Naaah He will be just fine..he will end up hittiing 25-30 hrs and bat .275...once he gets hot forget it!
April 19, 200620 yr he looked amazing last year, i was hoping it carried over, but it doesnt look like it has... im kinda worried.
April 19, 200620 yr Especially against lefties he seems to just shut his eyes and hope. He always seems to swing at the first pitch, perhaps moving him behind Olivo/Aguila may be a good idea, as he is almost an automatic out at the moment. Hopefully he can make an adjustment, or just try to be more patient and wait for a pitch to hit. It may just be he is trying to do too much because of the slow start.
April 19, 200620 yr No I'm not worried. He could be an all star someday or he could be the next Hee Seop Choi....we will find out soon enough but either way we have Jason Stokes to fall back on.
April 19, 200620 yr I am not too worried. I just think he is trying too hard to hit homers and such. So he is struggling. Lets give him another few weeks and see where things are.
April 19, 200620 yr So far this year ( I realize is still VERY early) I have been impressed by Ramirez, Uggla, Willingham, Helms and lately by Aguila and Olivo. I have also been impressed by Martinez, Johnson, Mitre, German and Miguel Cabrera's defense. I have been disappointed by Hermida, Jacobs, Reed and Abercrombie. Also very disappointed by Moehler. Hopefully Hermida and Jacobs can find their stroke because they were a big part in the Marlins plans to "not suck too much." Helms should play against lefties. As far as Abercrombie and Reed, I think a few weeks or months in the minors may do them good. If there are no trades made for a center fielder, once Hermida returns from the DL, I can live with Aguila there to see what he can do. Moehler is probably better off in the bullpen until he finds out what he is doing wrong. Josh Johnson should start.
April 19, 200620 yr Naaah He will be just fine..he will end up hittiing 25-30 hrs and bat .275...once he gets hot forget it! very true. Just give Jacobs a little more time, he is going through a slump that I know won't last long
April 19, 200620 yr We all knew he can't hit lefties. As long as he mashes against righties, then he just needs to work on the lefties aspect.
April 19, 200620 yr His patience at the plate makes Alex Gonzales look like the Dalai Lama. He just needs some plate discipline. Right now he's swinging at approximately 90% of all pitches coming his way. Once he settles in I think he will be fine for our new lean years. And defensively he's an upgrade from Delgado.
April 19, 200620 yr Im not worried just yet. A month from now I might be worried. :thumbup To me it seems like he has to LONG of a swing... That why hes not catching up to anything inside...He needs to shorten up a little bit..

We knew from the beginning he struggled against lefties and I think that combined with a slump is hurting him right now. I say we give him another couple weeks and if things don't get better then we look at other ideas.

April 19, 200620 yr Naaah He will be just fine..he will end up hittiing 25-30 hrs and bat .275...once he gets hot forget it! gotta agree with eddie. he's just in a slump. happens to the best of players. Im not worried just yet. A month from now I might be worried. :thumbup To me it seems like he has to LONG of a swing... That why hes not catching up to anything inside...He needs to shorten up a little bit.. He does need to shorten up his swing. Or, not chase those high inside fastballs that he apparently thinks he can hit.
April 19, 200620 yr right now jacobs is pressing too much at the plate. giradi probably needs to just sit him for a couple of days, get him some extra swings in the cages and clear his mind.
April 19, 200620 yr Bases loaded 1 out and all he had to do was at least lift the ball to the outfield to get SAC fly and he couldnt do that. his swing and miss ration is amazingly high!
April 19, 200620 yr Although Mike Jacobs has looked nothing short of terrible at the plate since game two against the Astros, I am going to go ahead and say he's in a pretty bad slump right now (oh, and he is in fact a rookie). After hearing what a lot of the folks were saying about him I was kind of expecting the next Derek Lee. Perhaps people have more of a realistic idea of the type of guy he is. I give him some time off. He's looking bad, get someone in there who is going to create more opportunities. Maybe its not his time yet.
