Stanton is 24 and Cabrera is 31 which is why I think Lou makes that differentiation. And I agree, I'd much rather have a 24 year old stanton vs a 31 year old cabrera.

I think the only players in baseball you take over Stanton are Trout, Kershaw, and McCutchen. I could hear arguments for Tulo, Machado, and Fernandez, but they all have significant injury issues right now so that's hard. He's better than the next batch of guys, like Cabrera, Goldschmidt or Longoria who would also be "first tier" options.

 

He's better than Puig, Abreu, Posey, LuCroy - those are the second tier.

 

He is as first tier as it gets unless you want to put Trout alone at # 1. You can't name 5 better players in baseball to build around for the rest of the decade.

That very injury history you've dismissed Tulo, Machado and others about is exactly the issue with Stanton until this year. It's also one of the main reasons he wasn't offered an extension prior to 2012 and 2012.

 

Just because GCMS is the shit now doesn't eliminate 5 years of a battered injury history. For all the injuries Tulo has had, Stanton's been right behind him.

 

He's not worth 28+ million a year, but he's probably going to get it on the open market because he's simply had all this buzz created around his power. I could also see him getting around 22-25MM a year with escalators and performance bonuses each year.

Cabrera is paid. 30+ million based on his overall boy of work. He evolved into a perrenial triple crown contender and one of the best batting averages of the 2010's.

I certainly agree that the front office failed in signing Stanton 2-3 years ago......but let us also recall that 2-3 years back most(not all) of the pretend GM's amongst us argued against a long-term deal, and some ridiculed an out of the box thought like 10/150 plus incentives. Many looked at comparables instead of looking at the player in question. Dreaming up contracts that only made sense for the franchise, not one that made sense and was fair for both parties.

Well dont feel bad, the negativity has come from himself partly the last five years - the lack of clutch hitting and perhaps not resulting in more wins. Other factors are shoddy management, bad pitching, terrible ownership. All this can result in bad years all around. Stanton should be happy if we offered 12 million a year for the next five years. He certainly doesnt deserve 20 and for that matter nobody does. I dont understand why you invest 20 mil a year for ten years when you can take that 200 million and invest in five or six good players.

Also, stanton has a history of injuries, so to give $200, then get injured in year 2 whilist the team not making the playoffs in any year, whats the payoff? Trade him for major league ready now talent. He clearly doesnt want to come back.

I mean think about it hard. Henry rolingarner was going to be sold to the yankees but instead he led the cubs to the pennant and went back to high school. With stanton, its the same. He would sign with the dodgers but instead the marlins overpay and finds himself on the DL because unfortunately for the last ten years, things just dont go our way.
