Moneyball (The Movie)

Featured Replies

Got to see a free advance screening of Moneyball last week. Let me tell you, I really enjoyed this film. It was well-written, for the most part well-acted (Brad Pitt was his usual self, but Jonah Hill was excellent) and was actually suprisingly funny. The whole theater was laughing throughtout the movie (not to say it's a comedy, though), and judging by the crowd's reaction afterwards, everyone seemed to enjoy it.

I believe it captured the spirit of the book pretty well, showing the diametrically opposed stances of the scouts and statiticians for the uninitiated. The actual stat talk is minimal to avoid turning away people that have no idea what OBP is. Note, they also skip a lot in the book, they added a few things that weren't and Paul DePodesta is replaced by a ficitional character (I'm sure due to legal reasons). Most puzzling, the "Big 3" are barely on screen, and the movie gives the impression Billy Beane came to his epiphany by accident inbetween th '01 and '02 seasons, though it started in '99 when Sandy Alderson was the GM and Beane was the AGM.

Plus, there are two scenes of interest to Marlins fans. 1) Billy Beane negotiating with Dave Dombrowki to trade Carlos Pena and force Art Howe's hand into putting in Scott Hatteberg at 1B and 2) Billy Beane's vist to Fenway when John Henry offered him the richest GM deal in sports history to be the Sox's GM.

Overall, I think any Baseball fan will love it, and non-fans should enjoy it as well. My wife...tollerates baseball, but really liked Moneyball m,uch to her surprise. Of course, that might just have been Brad Pitt....

ya, i heard the big 3 and then chavez/tejada weren't seen very much

Aaron Sorkin is a genius as a screenwriter.

He wrote A Few Good Men, The West Wing, Charlie Wilson's War, etc...........

Best in the world. They didn't go over as popularly but the writing on SportsNight and Studio 60 was top par as well.

Not to mention The Social Network, for which he won all the big awards.

He's a big part of the reason I've been so exciting for this movie.

Never saw Studio 60 but the writing for West Wing was as good as it gets. Sports Night was underrated.. should have never been canceled.

It was definitely Brad Pitt. She was probably thinking about him while you had sex that night. :p

I really hope this does well at the box office, because this movie isn't an easy sell. Hollywood studios love formulas and this film breaks from virtually every one from a baseball/sports movie standpoint. This is a movie almost purely about baseball.

No, it is a complete Hollywood formula. The outsider bucking tradition and thumbing his nose at the establishment.

It would've been better if it was about the Marlins. Wining a World Series makes for a better movie.

This season would have been a novela.

I meant that the Marlins were doing the same thing the A's were when they won they world Series in '03. And still are. Sort of.

Very good movie.

A lot better than the other film adaptation of a Michael Lewis movie. What an overrated piece of crap the Blind Side was.

I thought the movie was great.

saw the 4:10 showing. being in a theater with noting but old people reminded me of living in South Florida...

Gotta disagree

About the Blind Side?

It might as well have been called "Man, Aren't White Folks Great?"

It was manipulative and cloying, and totally not in the spirit of the source material. Yuck.

just got back from it.

liked it a lot and it really makes billy beane seem all the more intriguing.

gotta wonder if he would have taken that red sox job.

Of course not. He would have had money to spend then.

well yeah but they dont really say why he didnt take the job.

really a shame though. oakland does need a new stadium.

Great movie..

Hope it does will in the box office. We need more sports movies out in the market these days.

I read the book awhile back, but I believe he actually liked his situation.

I remember reading that he defended baseball's policies because he believed that small market teams (like his Oakland A's) could succeed.

Just saw it tonight finally.

If anything, this film really made me want to become a GM or assistant to one.

It won't happen. :(

Moneyball was really good.

And yes, it did explain his reasoning for sticking with Oakland. He wanted to win with less, and effect the way people thought about the game.
