Yoenis Cespedes to Athletics

Featured Replies

Enough with the Princefatuation... he's not coming to the Marlins.

Not until he officially signs with another team

It's definitely a risk because he hasn't really seen MLB caliber pitching despite the fact that he appears to be a tremendous athlete. I'm still kind of up in the air about signing him.

Well his first name isn't Darrell and is last name isn't Whitmore so I think if anything he might be a Yoennis Cespedes.

Thank God though.

Wow, judging by what the Marlins FO has said and these articles, seems like it's very likely he'll end up here. So what does that mean for Boni, Gaby and Lomo? I really don't wanna see any of them go.

My best guess is Boni turns into a super-utility man, platooning with Cespedes in center and getting work in other spots whenever possible. I still see him getting a solid 500+ PA's. Plus the injury bug will almost definitely bite sometime this season, and Boni is a great great great insurance plan.

Seconded, and there is no guarantee that Cespedes is ready for MLB.

For the money they are willing to give him, everything points to him being ready come season time.

Just cause they're willing to throw a ton of money at him means nothing. Chapman will, in total, get $30,250,000 from the Reds. He spent a few months in the minors for a reason. How often have you heard of a Minor League player getting $5mm+? He wasn't ready just yet, and he has a fastball that has touched 105 a few times, 106 once, even, with a very nasty slider. If we do sign him, I expect him to start in the Minors for at least a couple months, unless he absolutely explodes in Spring Training against decent quality MLB guys. [by explodes, I mean around a .500 average with a good number of walks and a few steals, plus decent defense.]

In all fairness, Cespedes is much older than Chapman. I don't think any MLB team is going to take the cautious approach with him; he should be a MLer immediately.

Yoenis Cespedes to play in Dominican

Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes will play with Aguilas Cibaenas in the Dominican Republic winter league while waiting to be declared a free agent to sign with an MLB team.

Cespedes is scheduled to make his professional debut Thursday against Gigantes del Cibao, said Luichy Sanchez, who works in Aguilas' front office. Cespedes initially will serve as Aguilas' designated hitter, a source close to the player said.

Cespedes is close to receiving his letter of temporary residency in the Dominican Republic, mandatory in the long process of being declared a free agent to play baseball in United States.

He joins Aguilas Cibaenas (4-8) at a critical time. The team has lost six of its past seven games in the round-robin semifinal tournament and is in last place. Aguilas needs to win its last six games to secure a spot in the finals.

The 26-year-old Cespedes is highly coveted by MLB teams. The Cuban slugger batted at least .323 in the past four seasons. Cespedes also hit a record-setting 33 home runs during the 2010-11 Cuban National Series season before escaping to the Dominican Republic to pursue his dream of playing in the majors.

Speculation in the industry is that Cespedes' major league contract could exceed the $30 million deal his countryman Aroldis Chapman signed with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010.
