Yoenis Cespedes to Athletics

Featured Replies

Joe Frisaro is reporting on his blog that Cespedes should become a FA in the next 10 days. He cited an industry source saying four years, $32 million is more realistic after several teams backed off when he was originally seeking an eight-year, $60 million deal.

4/$32 huh? Make it 5/$38 and you got a deal!

How about 32/$1m?

we're getting him.

the only question now, is will he perform well enough in ST not to start the season in AA (ya know, the team throws out some fake injury and calls it 'rehab')?

How about extending Stanton and signing Soler instead?

This would be the best, but apparently we're infatuated with the idea of having a Cuban on the team next year because we have a new stadium and, uh, he's Cuban.

I had a cuban sandwich the other day. It was pretty good. Will Cespedes be like that?

I don't know, I just can't push my self to get over that "undecided" hill to the "excited" side. Just to much uncertainty but it seems as if the price is dropping so it might be worth trying out.

I'm citing you. SquallSourcesSay.

If we get cespedes i would want them to keep boni for the bench and sign a fa sp instead of trading gaby for sp. Makes the team much stonger.

I know that Omar is a good fielder, a decent bat and making 4 mil a year.. but I really want Reyes, Boni and Hanley at the top of the lineup... and I think that's probably Ozzie's wet dream... so if we do end up getting Cespedes, I'd move Omar to the utility role and stick Boni at 2B.. and look to sign a veteran 4th OF like Ryan Ludwick or Magglio Ordonez. A bench of Omar, Dobbs, Ordonez and Petereson would be excellent.

I may stand pat with the rotation, see how they play in to the season.. and then look to upgrade midseason if it needs it.

Bonifacio can still play almost every game as a rotated player cycling positions. And the minute an injury happens (and one will happen), he'll be plugged in.

There should be no worry about Bonifacio's playing time. But he's not putting Omar on the bench.

I have yet to see anyone agree or diasgree with the statements I made about Boni. For a refresher i basically think Boni is going to be a crapshoot. He has only had two season of +400 PA, 09 and 2011. If you go strictly in that order he is getting better as far as starting goes but in 2010 he had several hundred less plate appearances.

I'm not hating on Boni because he is a fun guy and I enjoy him on the team. I just think its hard to be certain he will match last years performance.

I agree in a way. His hitting streak really brought his average up a lot, but he slumped towards the end of the year.

On the flip side, he has become a lot more patient so his OBP should continue to rise, and he puts the ball on the ground a lot better now (including bunting) so his BABIP should naturally be pretty high.

And he stole 40 bases while only really being agressive half of the year... I'd love to see what he could with the green light all the time.

This season will be make-or-break for Boni in establishing himself as a legit top-of-the-order threat. My prediction for him would be a .285/.360/.410 slash line. Which would be excellent to have in the 2-hole behind Reyes. Hitting in front of a healthy Ramirez could do wonders for the pitches that Boni sees. That's great because one of his biggest problems is pitch selection.

This is gonna be a fun year.

ok so when was it this guy becomes an official free agent?

If you go back a page in this thread, it is mentioned that reports say Cespedes will be a free agent within the next 10 days.

Even if Emilio falls back down to the .260 range in BA, if he can keep up that 60+BB his OBP will be enough to make him valuable, if not even dangerous

Beinfest confirmed today on the Zaslow hour that we are interested in Cespedes

& to echo, Samson on LeBatard said they're going after him very strongly. "We're not fooling around".

THEY'RE DEAD SERIOUS!!!

oh god please don't be a bust dude...

I have a feeling this guy is gonna be a huge bust, i hope I'm wrong but i am not too confident in him.

Maybe it's not the greatest long-term decision, but I think this team needs 1 more significant move to be exciting and a strong immediate contender, and I think signing Cespedes could be such a move.
