November 17, 201114 yr Anyone considered a much more affordable backup plan for a LHP in the rotation? I'm talking about a Mr. Dontrelle Willis, who didn't necessarily have the wins to show it this year, but made some positive strides. Marlins fans still adore him, and he is very affordable given his struggles since departing with the Fish. Just an option if others fall through. I think he's more suited for the role of a lefty specialist and the Marlins don't really need another one. Dontrelle is a starting pitcher or he retires. Every time he makes a start his first inning is a borderline disaster while he tries to find the zone, then he figures it out from there. Coming out of the bullpen for one batter or one inning is the last thing he needs to be doing... Not to mention you take away Dontrelle's BEST attribute, which is eating up innings. His career numbers don't really point to the first inning as a problem, but his numbers (especially as of late) do point to his problems with RHB. He has shown that he has the ability to routinely go 200+ innings when effective, but nobody wants 6+ innings from him if he's going to maintain an ERA above 5.00. I think Volstad is likely to have a better season than Dontrelle will and Volstad is likely to be dumped. Dontrelle might make sense for the Florida Marlins that tried to do everything on the cheap and might have needed gimmicks to attract fans, but he has no place on the Miami Marlins, which are supposed to be the exact opposite.
November 17, 201114 yr Dontrelle, despite a 5.00 ERA, actually looked pretty fresh towards the end of the season last year. I'm not saying go for him... but if I had to choose a miserable #5 pitcher between Volstad and Dontrelle... Volstad can go to hell.

At least the D-Train can still rake and has all those intangibles you just can't look up on baseball-reference.
November 17, 201114 yr Like a high leg kick.. a quirky character... a funny batting stance... Wait do they have stats for all of these?

November 17, 201114 yr as much as it pains me to say this i'd rather have volstad in the starting rotation than dontrelle. i wouldn't mind bringing in d-train for as a left specialist but we already have one of the best in the bigs for that spot. he would be handy to have as a pinch hitter/pitcher for those extra inning games but that's not typically something you really look to add to your club as those situations don't arise too often. if we didn't have Choate then I'd be all for bringing him back.

November 18, 201114 yr Yeah that's to shut up all of the 'intangible' supporters. Excuuuuse me for being a little nostalgic when the team I've loved since I was 8 is no longer a team. Dontrelle was just fun to watch play. He plays the game with joy that you rarely see anymore. His ERA has skyrocketed over the years and his mechanics aren't ideal (neither are Tim Tebow's), but he has shown nothing but perseverance for the last four years, and he should be commended for that.

Commended: Yes! Paid even a penny by the Marlins: No!

I'm pretty sure he was joking. Hotcorner invented a "stat" to quantify the unquantifiable intangibles, and that's what Dr. B was responding to, because it was humorous.
November 18, 201114 yr Dontrelle is worth an invite to ST to add some depth in our system. An injury comes along, and up comes Dontrelle. No risk, high reward. I think it's pretty clear this is the only place he has seemed to be comfortable playing, and the guy is absolutely adored by South Florida.

Luckily my lawyer is always hanging around to cover my ass when in doubt. Thank you.
November 18, 201114 yr Call it just speculation but I'd imagine the two places Dontrelle would want to be most is the Bay area and here in Miami. Of course beggars can't be choosers.
November 18, 201114 yr Someone's going to give Dontrelle more than a ST invite. Doubtful... his sample size from last year probably wasn't enough to convince someone to give him a Major League deal.
November 22, 201114 yr C.J. Wilson is expected to meet with Marlins officials in Miami soon after Thanksgiving. There are at least 13 teams interested in Wilson at this time and the bidding could easily rise above the Marlins' price range. But they have legitimate preliminary interest and will likely make an offer when the free agent left-hander visits, just as they did with free agent shortstop Jose Reyes and free agent first baseman Albert Pujols. Wilson, 30, posted a stellar 2.94 ERA and 206/74 K/BB ratio in 223 1/3 innings this past year for Texas. He's thought to be seeking a deal worth north of $100 million.
November 22, 201114 yr C.J. Wilson was also the losing pitcher in: -The All-Star Game -ALDS -ALCS -World Series Clutch! But seriously, maybe Wilson's postseason performance brings his value down a bit, making him a more feasible option for the Marlins.

But seriously, maybe Wilson's postseason performance brings his value down a bit, making him a more feasible option for the Marlins. Well then just don't have him where games are on the line! The thing is... you don't worry about post-season performance unless you can get there, first. CJ Wilson will help take us to the post-season.
November 27, 201114 yr Losing in the All-Star game was more or less wrong place, wrong time. If they bring him in a couple innings later, he doesn't give up that 3 run homer to Fielder that *just* gets out. But eh, not like the ASG was really *that* important [except in game 6 and 7...]. A lot of the actual "stars" sat that game out.
November 28, 201114 yr I just find it amusing/unfortunate that an ace like CJ Wilson would be the losing pitcher in not only the ASG, but every round of the postseason when he had a great regular season. His accomplishment (?) is in the record books and it's not an accurate portrayal of his career at all. That being said, I like his stuff and I'm anxious to see how it goes tomorrow, but I think he'll probably end up in Anaheim.
November 28, 201114 yr Well I guess technically it is an accurate portrayal, but my point is the postseason losses aren't indicative of the kind of pitcher he is.
