Posted March 8, 201411 yr Whether this is true or not IDK but the twitter account for Henry has the blue check. The Miami Marlins, who won 62 games last season and routinely trotted out a regular season lineup featuring players like Jeff Mathis, Donovan Solano and 37-year-old Placido Polanco, are apparently in a tizzy over the spring training lineup the Red Sox put together for Thursday’s Grapefruit League game in Jupiter, Fla. That’s according to the Sun-Sentinel‘s Marlins beat reporter Juan C. Rodriguez, who wrote that team executives were “outraged over the squad of minor leaguers that Boston sent to Miami’s Roger Dean Stadium to play a team that will feature 36-year-old Rafael Furcal at second base in games that actually count. From Rodriguez: Seven of the club’s starting nine position players Thursday do not have so much as one major league plate appearance. The only two with any big league time were outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. (95 at-bats) and catcher Ryan Lavarnway (269 at-bats). Even starting pitcher Allen Webster was a rookie in 2013, making eight appearances (seven starts) totaling 30 1/3 innings. Rodriguez also reported that the Marlins planned on contacting MLB’s offices over what he called a “gross violation of the league’s rules that specify all spring lineups must feature at least four regular players or players competing for regular playing time. Instead, the Red Sox sent a squad featuring the likes of prospects Deven Marrero and Heiker Meneses as starters. The Marlins, meanwhile, had a lineup that featured seven of their likely Opening Day starters, including Furcal, who has not played in the majors since 2012; third baseman Casey McGehee, who spent all of 2013 in Japan; and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, who was the worst player in baseball last season by WAR (-1.9). Rodriguez also notes that Boston’s lineup was especially galling given that the Marlins had instigated “super premium pricing for tickets to Thursday’s game against the defending World Series champion, only to watch “organizational filler in Red Sox batting practice jerseys with numbers befitting an offensive line face a team that, in 2013, charged its fans to watch Ed Lucas compile nearly 400 plate appearances for a team that finished 34 games out of first place in the National League East. It’s unclear if MLB will take action against the Red Sox for playing loose with the four regulars rule and instead sending minor leaguers fighting to get noticed by important team officials to a meaningless game that was 140 miles away from Boston’s spring camp as most of southwest Florida was under a tornado watch. Thursday’s game between the Marlins and Red Sox was called after eight innings due to rain with both teams tied at zero. Boston’s lineup out-hit Miami’s, 7-2. John W. March 8, 201411 yr Henry's comment was way out of line from an owner, one who was our owner and played some pretty lame lineups in his years here too. You can argue the comments were true as well as funny but definitely unprofessional. And the cheap shot about Furcal is silly too. His age is the reason he shouldn't be in our lineup? There aren't any other major leaguers in their thirties I guess.
March 8, 201411 yr To be fair, that's a great comeback. the Marlins were just asking for that comeback. I mean it was just sitting there. Granted not from a GM but yeah.
March 8, 201411 yr Honestly, I have no idea why the Marlins are complaining, anyway. It's really irrelevant.
March 8, 201411 yr Marlins should complain because the fans paid ....but on the other hand, it's saturday so this should have been squashed. No need for comments by john Henry. And whoever wrote about fielding lame lineups in 1999 etc is right also. John Henry is not one to talk.
March 9, 201411 yr Fans paid to watch a baseball game and that's exactly what they got. What the Red Sox did isn't a first.
March 9, 201411 yr He should apologize for selling the team to Loria. And it's a dick move because it's disrespectful to the players, who haven't said anything about John Henry.
March 9, 201411 yr This is a stupid thing for the Marlins to complain about. Not wise for Henry but I think this is extremely petty on the Marlins part.
March 9, 201411 yr Seeings as the Marlins regularly fail to field major league caliber players in the regular season, they are the last team that should complain about this, but I don't mind that someone called out a team on not honoring that rule. After all, it's there so that fans who are still paying to see the game get what they paid for. And for those saying they "still saw baseball", I'm sorry, but I can see baseball at a high school or even at the single A team a mile from where I live. If I pay for major league, that's what I want to see.
March 9, 201411 yr Guys I honestly don't think the Marlins actually care. Maybe a comment was said but why would they care beyond the initial reaction? If anyone would care it'd be Sox fans who attended the game. I just see the media trying to make the Marlins look worse yet again.
March 9, 201411 yr Think of a bright side, maybe an insult like this could light them up a little. Oh you don't think we have a regular lineup. Well show you. That kind of thing, I hope word gets to the roster.

That kind of thing, I hope word gets to the roster. Not to sound like im now defending Henry but I really think and hope he was talking about our 2013 lineups. Because as far as being a lineup of major league players, our 2014 lineup is undoubtedly above the 13 squad of prospects, washed up vets, journeymen, and AAAA players.

Because as far as being a lineup of major league players, our 2014 lineup is undoubtedly above the 13 squad of prospects, washed up vets, journeymen, and AAAA players. He very well may have been talking about 2013, and he wouldn't be wrong about that lineup. Shoot, I'd apologize for that, too. However, at the same time, I think Vince is right - maybe the team could use this as motivation. Henry may have been talking about last years lineup, but that lineup included guys like Stanton, Yelich, Ozuna, and Hechavarria (lol) who could all take that to heart.

March 9, 201411 yr Agreed that it could be twisted into motivation but then again, if all the little tidbits lately about the clubhouse being looser and more fun and confident are true, they might not need this and will laugh it off, which would be better. Lastly, I wonder what Salty thinks of all this, especially Henry's comment.
March 9, 201411 yr I highly doubt they could do anything about it even if they did give a s***. Our infield consists of a 1b who cant hit lefties to save his life, an injured 2b who didn't even play baseball last year, a ss who had the worst win shares in baseball last year, and a 3b brought out from a multi year exile in japan.
March 9, 201411 yr Im actually now cracking up thinking of how funny it'd be if the entire team thinks this is hilariously stupid except for Hechavarria who is fuming mad and just doesn't shut up about it even while his teammates laugh at him while wearing their purple pants. Like a scene out of major league.
