May 13, 201412 yr We can't really say that the food poisoning had anything to do with the injury. Although something severe happened by the 5th inning, the stress on the ligament was probably damaging for an extending period of time. But does anyone think that Redmond should be getting some heat for allowing Fernandez to be pitching under these conditions and knowing now that it was his fateful game that sent him into surgery? you think he play hurt last game he start???
May 13, 201412 yr you think he play hurt last game he start??? It sounds like he played hurt, but that was in part because he didn't tell anyone he was hurt. Or so we're told. But he was also violently sick from food poisoning when he pitched and Redmond probably knew about it and didn't pull him.
May 13, 201412 yr Redmond nay lose hi It sounds like he played hurt, but that was in part because he didn't tell anyone he was hurt. Or so we're told. But he was also violently sick from food poisoning when he pitched and Redmond probably knew about it and didn't pull him. Redmond may lose his job if know about it and let best pitcher keep playing

May 13, 201412 yr Apparently there are sources saying "it isn't promising medically" which seems to imply that there are other issues. Then Heyman said besides the UCL tear his elbow is in "pristine" shape which should allow for better recovery.
May 13, 201412 yr CANCEL BASEBALL Tempting to count me in on this one, never been so depressed over an injury, and the fact that the cumulative effect of losing Jose for 12 to 18 months is simply crushing to the vitality of the team in so many ways. Jose was such a breadth of fresh air, loved watching him do his thing, so dominating and so entertaining. I go back a little ways but to me it was like watching Bob Gibson pitch, with his breathtaking & dominating arsenal of pitches, batters cowering at the plate Would think about going rip van winkle and hope when I wake up next June or so, Jose will be back, Stanton will still be around and hopefully signed to a long term deal. Only hope is that a few of the kids pitching in Double A will be able to pick up a fraction of the slack come next month, will be interesting to see how they do. Have no appetite for a constant replacement diet of Hand and Slowey. Oh, and Henry Rodriguez-Marmol needs to be jettisoned pronto.
May 13, 201412 yr It was food poisoning. A little s*** and puke never hurt anyone. Until the discomfort starts messing with the rhythm and mechanics of his throwing motion.
May 13, 201412 yr I really don't see any blame on Redmond for this one. To me, this kind of injury will happen if it's gonna happen regardless of precautions... I feel like if Redmond pulled him because he was throwing up then Jose would have blown out the elbow on the next start anyways. The food poisoning itself obviously didn't lead to the injury. If u wanna say that he was ill and overthrowing to make up for his body being weak, that's understandable but it's not like that's the only thing that blew the UCL. So Redmond isn't to blame here.
May 13, 201412 yr Until the discomfort starts messing with the rhythm and mechanics of his throwing motion. Honest question, do u think five innings of his mechanics being off could tear his ucl or was it more like something that was bound to happen eventually, that game just being the one that broke the camel's, um, elbow.
May 13, 201412 yr Honest question, do u think five innings of his mechanics being off could tear his ucl or was it more like something that was bound to happen eventually, that game just being the one that broke the camel's, um, elbow. I really can't say, because I'm just wondering in the end. And I did already say that we can't assume that the food poisoning had a direct relationship with the arm injury, but the velocity data hints that something catastrophic happened to the elbow in the fifth inning. The Marlins need to really study Fernandez's mechanics to see if they changed from last season to this season or perhaps were even changed in his most recent game.

I wouldn't necessarily blame him for the Tommy John stuff, but sending him out when he had food poisoning is reckless no matter how you look at it. The fact that Fernandez hurt himself in that game just puts more scrutiny on an otherwise unwise decision.
May 13, 201412 yr The Marlins need to really study Fernandez's mechanics to see if they changed from last season to this season or perhaps were even changed in his most recent game. That sounds like advanced statistics and analysis would be involved. The front office doesn't like those things.
May 13, 201412 yr this injury's getting a ton of media coverage. I'm seeing the word "epidemic" and "plague" being thrown out there about pitching injuries. don't think I've seen that before
May 13, 201412 yr Throwing over hand as pitchers do 100 times a game is just not a natural movement. When you add contorting and different angles when trying to throw off-speed pitches it's only going to further worsen the problem. This injury is so common and can happen to any player, it's unfortunate that it happened to one of our best.
May 14, 201412 yr Apparently, Chris O'Leary saw this coming. http://www.chrisoleary.com/projects/PitchingMechanics101/Essays/PitcherElbowInjuryEpidemic.html In terms of other pitchers who I think could fall victim to the elbow injury epidemic, the picture below of Jose Fernandez was recently brought to my attention by a reader. Jose Fernandez Unfortunately for Jose Fernandez and Marlins fans, this picture shows both premature pronation and a resulting timing problem. While this arm action may improve both Jose Fernandez's velocity and his stuff, it will most likely also lead to elbow and shoulder problems. And so did Justin Orenduff: http://baseballrebellion.com/jorenduff/did-jose-fernandez-change-his-pitching-mechanics/
May 14, 201412 yr As much as I didn't want this to happen I gotta say I saw it coming. I have a post some where calling it. Straight gas or a wipe out slider every pitch had to take a toll.
