January 26, 20197 yr Mejia is the same position as Realmuto. If the Padres can extend JT they don't need Mejia. I'm not alarmed. I don't think this is a situation of moving a guy so much because of him sucking.

I can see a team like the Padres (and Rays and Reds) refusing to get him without an extension since they aren't guaranteed to be contending within the next two seasons. Also doesn't an extension kinda make JT even more valuable? It definitely doesn't hurt the return if JT agrees to an extension.
January 26, 20197 yr Their return package will be decreased by not letting allowing the window, it makes zero sense. If they are actually saying no, they are idiots. Plain and simple, not giving a window is indefensible. There is no reason to do that.

January 26, 20197 yr I think the reason for not giving them that window is because if realmuto says no then it takes any deal with the Padres off the table. That would then hurt the marlins in negotiations with other teams. It also is likely realmuto wouldn’t sign an extension with them since they’re basically still in a rebuild.

January 26, 20197 yr why arent we giving a window, thats dumb It really does seem dumb unless the only offers the marlins are getting that truly interest them are from low budget teams. If that is the case I could see a reasoning behind it. But even then that is a stretch

It's almost like they don't want the other team to give him an extension because they want to try and re-sign him in two years, which I don't think would go well. Trying to have the cake and eat it too here. Trying to ask for so much in return and not being willing to give this window, no wonder teams aren't biting yet.

January 26, 20197 yr I can only imagine they don't want to give a window incase he tells these teams "NO i won't resign for you and I'm going to hit the open market in two years no matter what". Opening that window can give an insight to JT's plans and screw the Marlins leverage. Chances are he will never resign in SD, CIN, TB or towns like that anyway. They probably threatened him... "say you won't resign anywhere and we'll keep your ass in Miami until you can leave. "
January 26, 20197 yr As I said before not giving the window actually makes sense. Him saying no to the Padres hurts negotiations with other teams because it takes san Diego out of the running. This is particularly true if for example we are more interested in dealing with another team and are using the Padres for leverage.

This is your rationalization for it but I respectfully disagree with you. San Diego is not going to offer Miami as good of a package without the window. That is a worse thing than what you are assuming.

But the marlins may already know realmuto is going to say no to San Diego (or they believe he’s going to say no ) I’m giving the marlins the benefit of the doubt here, because I don’t believe they would intentionally screw themselves over by not giving the Padres a negotiation window.
