Hot Stove (2021-2022 offseason)

Worst part about this rebuild is that after 4 years we haven’t developed 1 offensive bat that you can hang your hat on. Jesus, Jazz, and Lewis need to show up this year. Go get Laureano and a reliever to fill the obvious holes and I’ll be at least excited to see our development this year.

Or at least make an attempt and find out. They didn't try.

I also want to say he posted some stuff hinting at being open to the idea of returning - particularly when we made the playoffs. Again though, you offer the most money and odds are you'll get the guy you want. This is their job basically so they tend to go to who pays the most.

Right we made the playoffs that should’ve been a push to move forward then too so you didn’t need to do as much this offseason.

They still can move in the positive direction.  But they’re stagnant.

This.  I was thinking earlier that under Sherman / Jeter, the Marlins are a pitcher factory but name 1 great offensive player since Stanton, Yelich, etc. were traded to come up through this farm system...

According to rumors, they wanted Marte back and he decided to sign in NY.

As for the Giants, my point is no one expected that last year. Not even close.

well ya, the Mets made a financial commitment to Marte the Marlins refused to do.

Marlins wanted him back for for bargain basement prices.

Of course Marte will go elsewhere!

Ok but you then have to analyze if it would’ve been worth it to bring him back.

Historically speaking, spending the money on an aging CF’er who relies on speed is not necessarily the best investment.

that is true, but its a inditement of how up against a wall the organization is due to:

a. their inability to develop hitting

b. their total lack of a legit CF for 2022

He hasn't. But that wasn't the point. Sherman not doing anything does not mean that Loria ever paid anyone. He may have signed a few stars, but name one that he retained when the backloaded portions of their contracts came up. I'll wait.

He never really paid anyone. It was all bullshit. And he had to compromise the farm to get rid of the contracts in the end.

Not really the point I'm making.

End of day Loria sucked as an owner.  But at least Loria via some snake oil magic or whatever was able to convince a free agent to sign to come play in Miami.  Whether he kept them is immaterial to actually making a splash.  Loria's probably was a. he was cheap, b. he meddled too much, c. when there were no instant results from his signing big names he quickly did a 180 and did something else (to save money generally) in the blink of an eye forcing Mike Hill and Larry Beinfest before to do whatever it took to get rid of said player.

Sherman however to this point has proven unwilling to actually sign a big free agent so we dont even have a clue if he would intend to pay the deals or not.

And there is a massively higher amount of revenue he is receiving as opposed to Jeff.

If you combine naming rights, local money and national money, how much estimated is Sherman taking in before a single ticket is sold?

Yeah the TV deal under Loria was garbage and he had no naming rights income. national money went up since then too I believe.

an indictment*

Probably somewhere between 110-120 million.

If not a bit more.

other owners have to hate his guts considering he gets rev sharing and does shit with it. They are paying him basically.

I found an article yesterday that says all teams get 60M from national deals.  and then an estimate of 40 from local deals and then whatever naming rights.  So about 100 at least.  Before anything else.

I also question if thats light and not taking into account the new expanded ESPN deal (likely), the Apple deal (less likely) and the Peacock deal (even less likely).

So its probably a good 10 - 15 mil more for each team....

Signing Soler would just be for the sake of saying “we signed someone” at this point, right?

Why do we need Soler?
