Hot Stove (2021-2022 offseason)

Well, we all know why Marte didn't sign here either then as anything over 13mil per seems to be a no no for Sherman.

Sadly, MLB doesn't have the balls to try and force Sherman out. He really is cheaper than Loria as I suspected and said a long time ago.

I'm guessing he's using the money he's taking in for other business ventures or to pay down debts.

Would Reynolds even make a real difference anymore?

And my biggest "fear" is that Jeter was right and it sure as hell looks like that this morning.

At this point they need Reynolds, and a significant replacement for either SS, DH, or both.

And we know this team doesn't have the luxury to make small improvements with significant costs....

Kim says they don't want to mortgage the future....

At this point, get Conforto so we can go back to hoping things turn out right rather than expecting them to. This organization is cursed.

Just like I thought and said they'd do. The same old "we don't want to l mortgage the future" bullshit to remain cheap. While also touting their prospects as being great and just needing  more playing time. The farm is deep enough to afford getting some real talent in but nope. Gonna stay cheap and never EVER compete because of a piece of shit owner who also thinks 12mil per is borderline outrageous and won't sign anyone over that.

I said it last year.

Bruce Sherman is worse than Jeff Loria.

Fact.

Jeff would have signed Correa.

And Jansen.

And maybe someone else.

I’ve said it before how I grew up in a two team household so I’ve always been just as big a fan of the Red Sox as the Marlins and I can tell you with certainty that I’m done with this.

I was at the first spring game at Fenway South on Thursday and there wasn’t a seat available in the whole place! It looked and felt like a playoff game...in spring...with a lineup that, Besides Duran and Dalbec, was a bunch of nobodies they’re looking to tryout, and they still won 14-1. Meanwhile the Marlins game looks like a 2020 game. Empty.

I see a team that last year had JD Martinez, Kyle Schwarber, Hunter Renfeoe, Xander Boaegarts, Rafael Devers, Alex Verdugo, Kike Hernandez, Chris Sale, Nathan Eovaldi, and they still have to battle to get there. So I’m sorry but it’s obvious that this team might have slightly improved with the moves they made pre-lockout but the gap between them and the 1st-3rd place teams has grown exponentially. Even if they go get Reynolds and Soler at this point it’s pointless. They’re not beating the Braves, Phillies or Mets.

As good as Reynolds is, I don't think he is that type of a difference maker. He isn't Miguel Cabrera or Giancarlo Stanton.

This team needed multiple bats. Had they landed a deal for someone else (e.g. Castellanos or Schwarber) and traded for Reynolds, then we'd be talking. But I don't think Reynolds on his own solves the problem.

It's a shame. A great offseason would have put this team in legitimate contention, in my opinion.

Jeter probably was right.

I hope Sherman, Ng, and even Manfred are proud of this take. If you enjoy baseball but you don't care if the team wins or not then the Marlins are the team for you! What an embarrassment because it's true.

I know it's bleak now that you have stopped defending them.

(This is not intended as an insult)

Barry finally going all in on managment raw.

I hope this starts trending.

I feel like I could never quit on this team and that’s really bad news for me.

Unfortunately I agree, I’ll never fully quit, but I can certainly not care anymore.

they’ve proven they don’t, why should I?

I know money is tight and everything (*cough*) but aren't those Jansen, Correa and Castellanos deals all the kind of contracts this team should be capable of? We're not talking about 300 mil contracts here.

The "We tried" bullshit shouldn't work on anyone this time around.

Absolutely we should have.  That’s what I was saying last night.  If we can’t afford 100M contracts, pack it up.

They don't want to mortgage the future prospect wise?  Ok, I do understand that, that they do want it to be sustainable.....

but go SIGN SOMEONE then - you can't just always stand pat and do NOTHING.  SPEND and fill the holes that way while retaining the farm.  It's not that difficult.

I know it's easy to throw other people's money around but come on.....

To be fair, this seems like a weird time to give up on the organization considering all we’ve been through as fans.

Things are better now than they’ve been in the past.

They need to realize that it is not mortgage the future or nothing. It is mortgage the future or mortgage the present. The way they absolutely refuse to spend has already mortgaged something. The fact that they are going to waste the control years for Sandy, Trevor, and Pablo is tragic.

The only reason why anyone had hope in the past few years, the only reason why we did not completely despair over trading the last team's core, was that they said they would spend money when the time came. I think that claim is now well within doubt.

I wholeheartedly disagree. Loria would have retained or scooped Marte up and I guarantee you he would have picked up Correa if that's all it took to sign him. Loria had a good farm system for awhile there too so it's not like he never had shit in the farm. He had a much better offense and this group has better pitching. They've just flipped the strengths around but Sherman is MUCH cheaper so this org is fucked.
