Just curious where you came up with that figure.

But here: Reasons to care about how someone else dresses: 1. it is different from the way you dress and you believe your way is right due to the superiority of your own culture. 2. it is offensive to you because you believe your manner of dress is the right way, on account of your culture. 3. it is potentially dangerous and you are legitimately concerned about the other person's safety (like wearing open toed shoes at a construction site) 4. you think it is too flashy and that they should settle down and look like everyone else. 5. you are worried about what other people will think about you if they see you associating with someone dressed "that way". so only one of those is not rooted in likely racism, and "at best" classism. should I keep the list going?

Just seems like a bit of a reach. I’m not saying that it’s definitely not that but I’d bet it has more to do with age than race.

Imagine Don Mattingly looking at the Migos and shaking his head because of their outfits. That's racism, not age.

June 8, 20224 yr 6 minutes ago, GuitarPik said: So my family is being racist towards me when they say they don’t like the way I dress? not liking the way someone dresses and actively having a problem with the way someone dresses are two different things. (or maybe two extents of the same thing, sure). If Mattingly (or whoever) was like, "damn, I can't believe you tried to match vertical stripes with horizontal stripes what were you thinking?" then that's just not liking someone's outfit choice, the way they were dressed that day. But something that goes to the extent of being mentioned at a team meeting is because *someone* is embarrassed or ashamed or offended by how someone else dresses, which goes far beyond a simple like/dislike. "I don't think that tie goes with that shirt" vs. "Button up your shirt and take off those chains"
June 8, 20224 yr There is an element of “public figure” and “representing the organization” here though…..in that when going to and from the ballpark, like it or not, you’re a public figure/representing the organization. I don’t think it’s crazy to ask players to follow some sort of loose “professional attire” standard in and out of the ballpark. Any other time/on their own time, wear whatever they want. that said. While the meeting may not have been directly about “performance”, this meeting doesn’t happen if the team is winning. Edited June 8, 20224 yr by rmc523
June 8, 20224 yr I feel like the only person who dresses out of the "norm" or tries to look flashy is Jazz though? Aside from Miggys shoes the rest of the team pretty much resembles a generic baseball team that fits in any generation? Jazz is about the most enjoyable part of this team though and seemingly has put in work to learn and get better on the field. Is there anyone else who isn't a generic cookie cutter looking ballplayer that I'm just noticed thinking of?
June 8, 20224 yr Props to Jazz though if he was the one complaining about how everyone else dresses. "Ya'll dowdy bitches ain't got no sense of style!"
June 8, 20224 yr I feel like something that isn't being discussed at all is just how out of touch Mattingly is with his players if he thought they would "come out flat" yesterday so strongly that he even said it to the media.

I work in a professional services office setting and the pandemic has created significant turnover and a cultural shift. Pre-pandemic, we would wear regular business casual (slacks, dress shirts, polos, etc.). Now we're wearing sneakers and skirts very far above the knee. Am I racist for wanting us to go back to dressing like professionals?

It's different in an office, where yes, a dress code is absolutely acceptable.
June 9, 20224 yr after hearing Cooper talk about the meeting I'm even more confused. He didn't sound like he disagreed with anyone in particular, like wasn't angry at players, just maybe felt like hey stuff happens during the season, people's personalities aren't always gonna mesh, you just put your head down & play ball and do your job. And really didn't even feel the meeting was needed, like maybe people making too much of it? So if it was Mattingly who called the meeting I guess Coop didn't even think it should've happened. But maybe this Mattingly feeling that a) it's only going to get worse, b) the record is going down the tubes, c) he's gonna get fired, so worth trying to at least air the grievances and hope to hell somehow they can move forward. That's not to say Cooper is right, maybe he's just that guy that doesn't like to deal with things. I do not get the feeling this was Mattingly calling out players (could be wrong). But on the other hand we haven't really noticed or heard of any rifts between players. Nothing has boiled over in the dugout at least. I mean could I imagine there's some "need to handle yourself differently" stuff between, say.... Rojas and Jazz maybe? Or maybe there is some grumbling that the guys getting paid are not doing what they need to do? Rojas is sort of the de facto team leader so I'm sure he did a lot of talking, really sounded like just about everyone spoke. I really hope this is not an "old timers" thing with people coming down on Jazz. Kid's a star and this franchise needs him.
June 9, 20224 yr I don't know how this became about racism but my take was gonna be that all those things discussed were "normal" issues between a losing ballclub during a long season that should have been easily settled by the manager. Those relatively minor issues being turned into a major clubhouse rift is an issue caused by a manager that needs to be replaced. I'm with Cooper thinking this isn't that big of a deal and the fact it's become bigger is not good.
June 9, 20224 yr About the dress code, Marlins social media posts pics of the players arriving to the ballpark often and Jazz really shouldn't be the concern. He's colorful but he dresses "well" while there are others who definitely come to the ballpark much more "dressed down."
June 9, 20224 yr Someone's gotta ask this... is any of this coming from the departure of Jeter who preaches a serious hustle and professionalism at all times? We had heard that the team had really shaped up in that department and suddenly Jeter is gone and this issue comes up? Was Jeter the only guy holding up that standard and Bruce and Kim have no clue how to maintain it and the players know that? Like when a substitute teacher hits the classroom and everyone acts up.

Eff substitute teachers. You always got this stack of busy work to do every time they came in!

June 9, 20224 yr I'd like to see a team have an open clubhouse meeting, where they are all fighting and talking shit, but fans are walking through to see the players and ask for autographs and pictures at the same time.
