Ignoring if he is the best fit as yes obviously we agree those are the big two positions of need, he's a top 5 player at his position and would be an easy 2-3 win upgrade pairing with whoever remains of Fortes/Stallings. I'm not sure this is the direction I'd go (I am worried about pitch framer value with catchers over years of control if robot umpires show up which negates defensive value from especially guys like Murphy, etc.), but this would certainly be a substantial upgrade. He is very good. He'd be the 2nd or 3rd best player on the team.

I imagine if they do move for him, Laureano is also in the deal as he would be beyond obvious. Hell maybe Seth Brown too who is 30 and they try and extract value out of him as he's older and Oakland is obviously 3-4 years away. Brown played 1B/LF/CF/RF last year so that helps Cooper out as there is the minor question of who the hell is the # 2 1B right now. Those three guys are projected for 8+ WAR next year (seriously) and are set to make $8m in 2023 with years of control after.

I'm just saying, there are things to like here even if an Arizona CF, Bruce just spending money(!), Peraza, Rosario, etc. are better/sexier ideas. But it's probably getting one of the other bats minimum with Murphy, and doing this trade with all minor leaguers not named Eury or Berry so you still have a MLB SP to trade for the SS (since Bruce won't spend).

So are there any underperforming CF that are at least decent CF on a bad contract we could trade Garcia for?

People here will probably disagree, but I actually think Garcia will have a bounceback year in 2023. He had a freaking .582 OPS in 2022; his lifetime OPS is .739, and if you look at his numbers, he has strangely been an every-other-year player for quite some time now. There is no way he could be that bad again in 2023. I'm not saying he'll be great, but I think he'll at least be passable and not the worst thing ever.

I would say the answer is no as CF depth is not great in MLB baseball right now, but Aaron Hicks is making 4/$30.5m and Garcia is at 3/$41m. You could probably swap them with some nominal prospects being involved. Garcia is younger and more likely to do "something" so not sure this is a great idea unless it's a larger thing with Pablo/Peraza involved. Soler would be an idea here too.

I'd also say Bumgarner has a bad contract (2/$32m + maybe an extra $5m deferred payment one one absorb, so maybe 2/$37), and Arizona needs right handed bats so Soler (2/$24) and Garcia are also options here. Bumgarner obviously not a center fielder, but they have four lefty center fielders so this too is the larger deal and getting them a younger high end arm in a mutually beneficial salary dump.

I actually think most people on here believe he'll "bounceback" because, really, he can't honestly be much worse than last year. He could .OPS 720 and it would feel like we added a premium bat versus what we saw from him last year.  That's not even an exaggeration.

Now, do I rely on him to bounceback to somewhere around his career norms?  Nope.  Not after what I saw from him last year. But I do believe he'll be "better" than last season? Sure - as he was THAT bad.
