Might be interesting if they would outright add Periera and Sweeney - Marlins get CF and Groshans platoon partner for 2024. But this doesn't help now unless someone knows how to make Gleyber and Jazz a SS

Anything can happen, though. There could be injuries. Teams could regress or underperform. The Mets could, well, be the Mets. You have to at least try and be competitive to take advantage of any variables that may occur. Look what happened in 2020. I don't think many expected the Marlins to be that solid, and they won a playoff series.

Yes you can only control your own team.

The Phillies had no business being good with pretty dumb deals with Schwarber and Castellanos, and that's why you play the games. Set yourself up for success and maybe that small path gets you to the playoffs and series. Even if it takes Tatis being suspended to do it.

It's almost like the union and owners worked something out with the Sherman and Ng.

They let him use the team to make money as long as they stay a bottom feeder and help the real teams pad their stats. Meanwhile, the union doesn't put up a fuss because every offseason the Marlins overpay for a 220 hitter (no way JT comes here from the Dodgers at age 40 to bat 270-250) helping to drive the market and thinning the herd of available free agents.

Let's be honest, Marlins are gonna sign Justin Turner and Sandro Bogarts and they're gonna trade for Brandon Reynolds. Might even throw in Jorge Abreu!

Yes agree, if he were the 3rd player acquisition, it would make a lot of sense for the right price. I think they could play Cooper/Turner and Berti/Turner as 1B/3B platoons and stash Groshans and LeBlanc in AAA. It would make a lot of sense to give Cooper off days as he's always hurt, and Turner isn't exactly young. I'm assuming here Turner can play some 1B of course but I think that would be a non-issue. Cooper/Turner/Berti all get 100+ starts here assuming health which is more than appropriate for those players.

Rinse/repeat - trade for Arizona CF or Reynolds/sign Kiermaier, and then trade for Rosario or Peraza, or sign Correa, etc. etc. Team would look good and smart short and long term.

 

So what I'm saying is, Gallo in CF? Or check out the 2017 tape and put him back at 3B too?

This is also kinda what I meant about her apparently making an offer to Murphy. It would be fine if the two other giant glaring holes were fixed first but targeting that first won't help the team very much at all, if any.

Murphy would very much so help the team. He's a 2-3 win improvement over either of Fortes or Stallings easily. He was a 5 WAR player last year. He's a Jazz. But sure, you'd need Laureano in that deal also to be at least a platoon CF, and then we're still at Rosario/Peraza/Correa/Xander/whoever for SS. They could make other moves first so long as they don't forget to make the more obvious ones later. Opportunity costs and all, it's hard to say what is actually happening behind the scenes as we don't know.

I think my biggest issue right now is make a move to set the tone to the offseason, even if other deals take longer. Making a move will only help you with other FA signings, offering guys extensions, etc. There are obvious things they can do - so do one.

1 - Correa, Xander, Turner, or Swanson
2 - Nimmo
3 - Trade Meyer, Berry,  Salas, and all these LF we don't care about for Reynolds and Bednar

We need those 4 guys, and then all we have to do is trade one of Rojas/Wendle in a salary dump for nothing.

Payroll is $130m now with those 4 guys, which is bottom 18/19 in baseball similar to Detroit and Milwaukee (smaller media markets), and oh we have the # 1 SP prospect in baseball coming midseason. If we suck, we'll trade everyone July 2025 and try again. But let's go for it. We're that close.

This is the EASIEST offseason ever for any sane individual who wants to own and operate a baseball team. It's infuriating.

I feel like Swanson would be a bust if he came here tbh.  His home/road splits show a lot of his offense comes from playing in Atlanta. Maybe it was an abberation but I feel like he'd be one of those guys who would come here and be another albatross on the team.  Granted his bat would still be an upgrade over Rojas in theory barring some Avisail bad season but yeah. I don't think he'd really be that great overall in Miami.
