How should we expect him to perform better when given more responsibility and power? I don't understand the reluctance to just keep Edwin for another year and look for the big name guy in 2012.
October 19, 201015 yr I don't want Porter because I never saw or heard anything remarkable about him as a coach. But like Iowa it's not clear to me exactly what Porter did to make some many folks feel so strongly. Anyone want to add a little more detail?

Rodriguez October 18th, 2010 | 7:30 PM Quick clarification for everyone who’s lambasted the Marlins’ front office for giving up Cody Ross when the Giants put in a waiver claim on him two months ago…Money was not the principal reason Ross no longer is a Marlin. I know that’s hard to believe. These are the Marlins we’re talking about, but those who’ve suggested otherwise are uninformed. Remember, the Marlins didn’t trade Ross before the July 31 non-waiver deadline because they still thought the team had a shot at the wild card. Had the Marlins stayed in the race, no question Ross finishes the season in South Florida. At the time of the waiver claim, Ross was owed about $1 million for the remainder of the season. Saving that money was secondary to the need to get Cameron Maybin back in the majors and determine whether he is a long-term solution in center. Ross was not in the Marlins’ long-term plan. Even if he had stayed here the whole season, the Marlins were not going to tender a contract to the arbitration-eligible Ross and pay him the $6 million plus he would have commanded. At that price, Ross no longer would be outperforming his contract. Some bloggers got it right. Our friend Michael Jong over at Marlins Manic doesn’t lament Ross’ departure either. Ross is a wonderful guy and was an absolute pleasure to deal with on a daily basis. I hated to see him go, but keep in mind that before his postseason power surge, Ross hit three homers in 73 at-bats for the Giants during the regular season. He’s hot right now and it’s great to see him do well, but the Marlins’ front office was right to move on. ** If Ross has his way, he’d like to reunite with Dan Uggla in San Francisco. According to a San Francisco Chronicle blog item, Ross has been lobbying Uggla to hold off signing a long-term deal with the Marlins and join him in San Fran after 2011. As much as getting back together with his best buddy might appeal to Uggla, I seriously doubt he would turn down a fair, multi-year offer from the Marlins this offseason. ** A lot of buzz about former Marlins coach Bo Porter becoming the next manager. Porter is a candidate and has fans in the organization, but sources that have spoken to the club say characterizing him as anything more than that right now is inaccurate.

I don't particularly hate Bo Porter, but like everyone else here, I do question how well he'd manage. I think that all we need is a competent manager..doesn't need to be a big-named manager. Sure, if we got a big named manager it might seem like the FO is serious about getting to the playoffs..but they can show that in just fixing the many holes we already have on this team. Next year we should hopefully be better than 2010 and even with just Edwin managing, we could do a lot better than 2010. So I'm all for keeping Edwin if worse comes to worse.

I highly doubt Porter signs on with the worst franchise in MLB before hearing some feedback from the Marlins on the manager job, though. Considering how terrible Porter was as a third base coach (and it's not hyperbole to say he is among the worst I've seen), his judgment faculties are questionable. I also tend to prefer older, more experienced types because they tend to know the league better and are better versed in making in-game decisions.

In 2009, he led Double-A Tennessee to a 71-69 record and the Southern League championship series, and he spent two seasons as manager at Class A Peoria, finishing first in '07. He wasn't sure whether he would return to the Cubs' system and manage again at Triple-A. "I still have the ambition to do this at the Major League level," Sandberg said.
