Loria's letter to the fans

Featured Replies

I guess it's cool when Passan states things that are not true. It's only evil when Loria lies.

I saw someone on Twitter mention that Passan listed players from the 1998 firesale as dealt by Loria's regime. Nen, Bonilla, White, etc and now I see he actually did :lol

Passan is such a moron

I also forgot to add...when you rebrand your team and give it among the worst color combinations, logos, and uniforms in the long history of this sport, rivaled only by the Astros rainbow bright uniforms of decades ago, you are not going to be well liked.

Really? We're back on the uniform? :|

Something I can't stand is how Cote and others seem to make a bigger deal about Loria lowering payroll than anything else. As if payroll is the measure of a winning team. To me that's an uneducated way of picking at Loria. I for one don't care about payroll if the on field result is a success. Its almost like they'd be upset if the 2013 team was over .500 just because the payroll is in the 40s.

If Cote lived in Oakland, he'd hate Billy Beane, right?

I'd like to know more about how these 410M in county bonds are structured. Especially the 91m bond given by JP Morgan that the writer states is going to cost 1.2B by 2047. How are these bonds structured? The normal bond at 7-8% interest would call for a total cost of around 1-1.1B between then and 2047. The only way these bonds could cost 2.4B, or double, even worse the JP Morgan bond at 7 times what it should.......is if they're structured with negative amortization....meaning payments at teaser-like loan rates of 1-2% the first few years allowing the principal to balloon. That would have been a bad deal to sign off on by the commissioners, but it would be politically profitable in the short-run, and to any extent that Loria and his crew of lying dogs added to that type of structuring, it's the financial knife in the back to the Dade county residents years from now as Loria/commissioners gets to benefit financially/politically from the teaser rate now, leaving the balloons to our kids...many of us are disgusted about what Loria has done but this is something that is far more punitive on the community than a AAA team masquerading as a major league team.

I hate Loria because:

a. he is a liar.

b. he lets incompetance remain in power

c. he is a blowhard.

d. he does things that simply alientates his already small fanbase regularly.

Loria as an owner is under .500

If he truly cared about winning as he claims, he would replace the baseball people making decisions for ones that at least try something else. Whether its Beinfest's fault or not ( I personally think he deserves at least half the blame for simply having horrible drafts for basically half a decade straight); you cannot simply say, "I care about winning" and then keeping the people responsible for putting together said team year after year when you dont win.

So basically everyone is saying they'd only be ok with the letter if he wrote...

Dear fans,

I'm an idiot. Sorry.

Loria

....I don't get how anyone expects him to do that.

He shouldn't have said anything if this is all he could say.

The reason the total cost is so high is because there are NO payments due until 2026. IIRC, even with steadily increasing payments starting in 2026, by 2029 they are still piling up accrued interest but at a steadily slower rate until amortization finally starts in 2030 when the payment is 8 mill. Payments then increase geometrically and peak in 2042 at 118 mill.

These kinds of negative amortization bonds with no payments for as long as 20 years have been used by municipalities all over the country and are a ticking time bomb. Politicians love 'em -- no current cost or even near-term cost, but very high costs to be paid many years or decades after they are out of office.

Loria and the Marlins had NOTHING to do with how any stadium-related bond was structured, those decisions were made entirely by the city and county politicians.

Other than not having all his facts a 100 percent correct, I really can't disagree with what passan said for once. I hate the guy with a passion but he still makes valid points in this article.

One thing I don't understand is how you give up on a high payroll after one year when all the years of low payroll didnt even give you a playoff spot. (Obviously not talking about 03)

I can give Loria credit and will continue to do so when deserved but I won't be missing his exit from the team when it comes.

The Marlins lost tens of millions of dollars last season. In the

previous six seasons, according to Forbes, their combined operating

profits were $198 million and the franchise grew in value by $206

million. In at least two of those years, according to their financial

documents, they paid money to Double Play Company for a "management

fee." Loria and Samson run Double Play. The owners were paying

themselves to … own the team.

hahaha jesus christ

after this, I really don't think Passan hates or has ever hated baseball in Miami. he just hates shitty owners
