September 19, 201510 yr ...to be in the rotation next year? Jose is the obvious #1 and Koehler probably has a spot locked up. Anybody else? Cosart, Hand, Nicolino, Conley...Urena? Lol. What will our rotation look like next year?

What will our rotation look like next year? Koehler is actually pretty bad and doesn't deserve a spot but this FO and their donovan solano loving selves and all... I'm not a big fan of cosart but he seems to have made strides with his curveball lately... urena/nicolino/hand are terrible Conley is a change up away (he threw it really well/choice last game but his fastball was also at 93 avg) from being a bad ass and really has #3 upside and the only one of that cohort to have that Maybe HA is ready by ST? They basically need to sign a minimum of 2 FA SPs not named doug fister
September 19, 201510 yr The Marlins are going to sign Mat Latos in the offseason and he's going to be their number tree.

They basically need to sign a minimum of 2 FA SPs not named doug fister Koehler's ok as a backend starter. He probably has a spot locked up next year and I don't really have a problem with that. His peripherals kinda suck, but he's kinda been outpitching his peripherals since he was in the minors. Sort of like the anti-Nolasco in that sense.
September 20, 201510 yr Nicolino and Urena are bad, but not just like "hey that guy is bad" bad, but legendarily bad. Among pitchers with 50+ innings pitched, Nicolino has the worst K/9 in baseball. Second worst? Jose Urena. Making things even more hilari-bad, Urena's BB/9 is actually higher than his K/9. He's the ONLY pitcher in baseball for whom that is the case. These guys are world-class bad pitchers and if the Marlins want to compete next year, they should be nowhere near the big league roster.
September 20, 201510 yr Author Sad thing is that Nicolino has a great chance of being in the rotation next year because Marlins.
September 20, 201510 yr Sad thing is that Nicolino has a great chance of being in the rotation next year because Marlins. Fernandez, Alvarez, New SP 1, New SP 2. There's one slot really and it'd be between a lot of names including him unless of course he's involved in a trade this winter.
September 20, 201510 yr Fernandez, Alvarez, New SP 1, New SP 2. There's one slot really and it'd be between a lot of names including him unless of course he's involved in a trade this winter. I'm not sure why HA will come back for opening day from a labrum tear which usually takes as long as TJ? PS Conley is my darkhorse. I realy like his 4 seamer/slider
September 20, 201510 yr I'm not sure why HA will come back for opening day from a labrum tear which usually takes as long as TJ? PS Conley is my darkhorse. I realy like his 4 seamer/slider Well that's IF HA is back, obviously another spot is open if he doesn't.
September 20, 201510 yr I did notice that Conley's fastball has been 91-93 and he topped out at 94-95 which is where I recall scouting reports having him a few years back. But yes, he could use a good changeup.
September 20, 201510 yr I'm not saying Nicolino will or should be in the rotation....I'm also not saying that he is or is going to be a good MLB pitcher in the long run...but he has had a low K rate throughout his entire minor league career and still has career ERA under 3 and a pretty good WHIP in over 600 minor league innings. He's produced quality starts in 6 of his 9 career MLB games, including 4 of his past 5 games. Perhaps, he's just one of the rare guys that is successful without good strikeout numbers.
September 20, 201510 yr I think, considering the front office's aggressiveness the last two offseasons, for better or worse, they're almost guaranteed to add new names into the rotation mix. So to try and figure out the rotation at this point is a dead end street. Out of who we have now, so many names are bound to change.
September 20, 201510 yr Everyone seems to forget that young players can improve. Don't forget Adeiny Hechavarria was a -2 WAR player 2 years ago and he's a 2+ WAR player now. At that time a lot of people wrote him off as the worst player in the game with no future, he's now considered a top SS in baseball and a Gold Glove front runner. I know we're discussing pitchers, but just an example of a young player improving over time. Let's not be so quick to write people off, not all pitchers progress like Jose Fernandez. A lot of people sitting here criticizing Urena and Nicolino are the same that wanted to over pay for James Shields a year ago...

I remember similar comments made about Heaney last year when he came up and wasn't very good. Just give it some time before making definitive decisions on any of these young pitchers.
September 20, 201510 yr We'll be fine for 2016 since we all know Loria will get us... sp1 = David Price sp2 = Zack Greinke with these 2 in the rotation we'll be ok for 2016

A lot of people sitting here criticizing Urena and Nicolino are the same that wanted to over pay for James Shields a year ago... James Shields, on a bad year, would still easily be our #2. I don't understand your point with that one. Also, certain people thought that Hech had more talent than his defensive metrics. In the cases of contact pitchers, they don't just become swing-and-miss guys. This is who they are. Hopefully Nicolino is another Buehrle. That's his best case projection.
September 21, 201510 yr I'm not sure why HA will come back for opening day from a labrum tear which usually takes as long as TJ? PS Conley is my darkhorse. I realy like his 4 seamer/slider Yeah Koehler is a lock and then I'd go Cosart and Conley. Hopefully Nic pitches well too and makes a case. But agreed they have to sign 2 guys.
September 21, 201510 yr I feel like Loria is going to spend more this offseason than we anticipate. They did get a lot of contracts off the books this year through trade
September 21, 201510 yr . Hopefully Nicolino is another Buehrle. That's his best case projection. So he owns pitbulls and will grow to hate Jeffrey Loria? Awesome.
September 21, 201510 yr I feel like Loria is going to spend more this offseason than we anticipate. They did get a lot of contracts off the books this year through trade Also, not sure if it comes off the same finances but aren't we off the Ozzie and Heath Bell contracts now?
September 21, 201510 yr If Conley is part of the team's rotation next year we are in trouble. He's a long reliever in the overall scheme of things. Trying to pull a full season of starting out of him, if we actually intend on trying to compete in some way, is going to end poorly. The only person who should be a guarantee in the rotation next year is Jose Fernandez, and if they keep Koehler him as well. I feel like Cosart should earn his spot back, and all of the prospects including Nicolino/Urena/Flores/Conley/Pineyro/etc... should get extended looks in Spring Training. If one of those guys just lights the world on fire I'm fine with them getting a rotation spot. However, we definitely need to sign two top tier starting pitchers if we want to finish next season near or over .500. The current rotation outside of Jose if filled with #5 starting pitchers, and unfortunately none of the prospects thrown into the line of fire has flourished beyond their #4/5 starter projections. It's unfortunate we don't have guys like Heaney/Desclafani/Eovaldi/etc.. anymore who could help us get by for the time being while we look for a top tier starter, but if Loria is actually serious about spending money and competing (how many times has this been said before), this is the perfect offseason to get those starting pitchers. Like I've said all season, bring in Zimmermann and Samardzija and I truly believe the rotation becomes formidable without breaking the bank. I'd include Kazmir but he's obviously beyond the Marlins budget at this point and not the safest investment.
September 22, 201510 yr This is already known. The Marlins will be shopping for pitching this offseason.
September 22, 201510 yr Going after Zimmerman will tell me how serious the Marlins are about trying to contend next year. Beyond depressing are the "realistic" targets of Gallardo, Milone and perhaps Fister as speculated by Frisaro. I'm okay with one of Gallardo or Milone as starter #3/4 but a stud is needed at #2 and this team needs to spend to get one, and they no doubt have the money to do it.
September 22, 201510 yr Zimmerman would be nice and so would Samardzija. Kazmir health concerns me still.
