People keep mentioning Capps but its a shoulda, woulda, coulda situation people. We arent on cheapo mode right now when we have half the core signed to extensions. The Capps trade happened because the team wasnt planning to lose JDF16. We needed help down the strech and paid the Padres price for a Jeff Lockes type rental. We got smarter as we pile the shit and see what can stick. We are aware that out SPs arent so great. I mean we had Alvarez and had to let him go to the A's cause he was a risk for a team that tries to squeeze all out what we have. We let a couple pieces go along the way. Jansen is a piece we can have for years to come. We might not win in 17" but if I remember correctly the Cubs run to the ring all started with one BIG splash, Jon Lester. Granted he is a starter. But we need to start somewhere. Teams are catching on and joining the band wagon for this super-pen idea. Lets endorse it. Again its not our money so fuck it. If anythting itll help us recruit more FAs here if Jansen doesnt get traded. 

 

It's not our money but they way they spend their money affects the product on the field.  Making a commitment that large to a position that isn't really a need is not the smartest thing to do.  It ties up "their money" and it doesn't allow us to fill other holes that are more pressing. 

 

Besides, we aren't in a spending mode right now.  I would say we are in a fuck it mode.  It's pretty obvious that Loria is going to sell this team soon.  Mitt Romney's people didn't just talk to Loria out of the blue.  I'm sure the word is out that Loria is looking to sell.  

 

If you look at the comments made by some people after Chapman went to the Yankees, you will see that one of the reasons that Chapman signed with the Yankees even though Miami offered more money was because the contract was structured differently and the Yankees offered a larger signing bonus.   That leads me to believe that the offer was heavily back loaded.

 

Also, it was reported that the Red Sox offered us Clay Buckholz who is making $13 Million next year and we turned them down because he didn't fit our budget.  How can he not fit our budget when we are offering Jansen and Chapman $86 million over 5 years?  That's between 17 and 18 million annually depending on the proposed figure. Bucholz would probably be our ACE right off of the bat and $13 Million is considerably less than $18 million.  Not to mention that we have an actual need at SP, and that  the one strength of our minor league system is relief pitching prospects.   

 

It's no secret that the Marlins way of doing business is not a model for success.  Even when they "splurge" , the do it in the cheapest way possible.  It's always a back loaded quick fix that they can trade away before the real pay out begins.

It's not even a rule that's needed... it's just common sense. Sadly it's the same people (person) every time too.
