JT Realmuto Requests Trade

Oh boy

It appears like the next few years in Miami are going to be rough at the major-league level, and catcher J.T. Realmuto wants to avoid the bumpy ride.

After the Marlins dealt Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, and Dee Gordon, Realmuto has requested a trade from Miami, reports Craig Mish of Sirius XM Radio.

Realmuto is among a handful of veterans who could remain on the rebuilding Marlins next season, but it doesn't appear to be an ideal situation for the developing 26-year-old catcher.

The backstop has improved every season since coming to the big leagues in 2014, bumping his OPS up to .783 last season - third among MLB's qualified catchers, behind Buster Posey and Gary Sanchez.

Realmuto is eligible for arbitration for the first time in his career and won't hit free agency until 2021. He's projected to earn $4.2 million in arbitration, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

Miami has also been discussing the future of outfielder Christian Yelich, according to a report.

Do everything you can to trade him for very good value.

He (and Yelich) are damaged goods (mentally).  The team isn’t going to sniff the playoffs until 2021/2022 anyway.

Please. Show him the money and give him the Salvador Perez buyout deal (5/$55ish) where he is under contract through 2022 and can get a second big contract at age 32. He would take it this far from free agency versus taking a 1 year arbitration deal for $4 millionish. This is all a puff news piece like everything else with the Marlins these days. Suggesting professionals are damaged mentally is silly. There is no crying in baseball.

Yelich and Realmuto are perfect guys to rebuild around and can withstand a rocky 2018/likely 2019. It's their team now. Also it would be perfect for pitcher continuity with a good catcher, so Realmuto knows every arm the team has which will be invaluable as they all come up, develop, and play with him.

Pay the man. It's likely a smart baseball move and would be a good PR piece for them to sell "they have a plan" by showing they are thinking longterm while they are still shipping out other assets (Castro, Straily, Bour, etc.).

If management listens to anything a player thinks, then they are more inept than believed.  Who runs the team anyway?  I doubt JT or most anyone with any integrity would not give his best for his teammates, regardless of who they are, and no matter what he is griping about in December.  What is he going to do, hit .200 on purpose?

11:15am: Per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (Twitter link), the Marlins say they recognize the desire that both Realmuto and Christian Yelich have to be traded, given the scope of the team’s recent rebuilding efforts. However, the team doesn’t have any intention to trade Realmuto at present, Nightengale adds.

10:51am: Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic tweets that Realmuto does indeed want to be traded out of Miami

I mixed about this also.  On the one hand J T hasn't done enough or been around long enough to demand anything.

On the other hand it has to be demoralizing to a player to know that for whatever reason your FO is going to tank it for a few years.  On top of that they will be his prime years.

It's hard to play for a loser and even harder to play for a loser who's FO isn't trying.  I like J T and this won't change my opinion of him.  If they can get a good haul (Good luck with these clowns making the deals) for him then by all means accommodate him.  At the end of the day this all Jeter's fault so.........

#FuckJeter

I know, he had to do it.. Every analyst agrees... blah blah blah

This ownership group has no business owning a team so it's their fault.

Michael Hill said in a statement on Monday:

"We used the last couple of weeks continuing to lay the foundation for building a first-class, winning organization. Should we feel like we need to make a trade involving any of our under contract, controllable players, we will be the ones to initiate that conversation and always do what is best for the organization."

Offer him an extension past his first few years of free agency and if he doesnt take it then trade him for multiple top prospects.  Between him, Straily, Bearclaw, Bour, and Yelich, we should have the best farm system in baseball after this offseason if all those guys go.

Ignoring the fact you just changed it from "should have the best" to "one of the best", you're still wrong. They wouldn't be top 5 even.

you really love taking an opinion of someone else and flat out calling it wrong.  And yes, they would have one of the top farm systems in baseball if not the best.  That's 5 different players with trade value, 2 of whom have ridiculously high price tags in Realmuto and Yelich.

trading Yelich, Realmuto, Straily, Bour at the deadline, and then Bearclaw, we will have one of the best farm systems in baseball.  Not all that controversial.  Yelich and Realmuto will bring back enormous prospect hauls.

Didn't you use the same logic with Ozuna last week? How did that turn out? What gives you so much confidence in this management group?  They haven't proven that they can get a great haul for anyone.  I'll cut some slack for Stanton because of the contract and NTC.  With Ozuna I think this group showed they aren't up to the task.  If they fire Hill before those players are traded it might be different.
