Brinson

Featured Replies

For those who say Brinson has shown absolutely nothing, you're not watching. He definitely has talent and potential. That being said, he belongs in AAA.

I almost don't even care about what he's doing now anymore... now I'm more interested in reading peoples opinions whenever he figures things out. Can't wait for all the "Oh I knew he was this good."

I must be out of touch.  So are people spouting opinions that Brinson is a bad player and his case is closed after two months?  I thought the Brinson debate centered on whether he should be working through his problems in the MLB or at AAA?  Yesterday I took part in this thread but I was posting because I was curious to see how his struggles compared historically.  In no way was I suggesting that these exercises should be indicative of what type of future he has.

Yes they are. Somebody said the other day that his ceiling is a fourth OF in MLB aka the best he'll be ever.

Others have questioned if he will ever hit enough.

Multiple people have called him a bust.

Well that is a silly point of view.  It’s baseball, nobody who watches baseball seriously would jump to that conclusion so soon unless they have ulterior motives.  I clicked through that tweet that was posted earlier.  It seems that LeBatard’s cronies have some cynical all star campaign going.  That’s poor taste.  Lewis Brinson has had an outstanding attitude about being part of the organization since the day he was acquired.  The kid is working extremely hard, and he’s on the team because the front office wants him here instead of New Orleans.  That’s not his fault.  I’ve certainly made a couple snide remarks here or there in a post in this hidden corner of the internet but overall we’re all Marlins fans….aren’t we all in his corner hoping for the best?

I agree, we want him to be good. I'm sick of this debate, bust not bust. Good not good. Brinson is 24. He has real power but has no approach at the plate. He will be bad the rest of the year, but the physical gifts he has only require him to improve one category and overnight become good. Contact %. He doesn't have to hit for average, he just has to make enough contact that his bat speed does the rest of the work. His defense is really good, and his power right now is good enough to survive in the majors. He is on pace for near 20 HR for a season where he is hitting under .200. That kind of says what we are looking at. He is raw. Personally I'd like to send him down so he can catch his breath. So he can develop his approach. But right now there is a lot of positives to be excited about him in the future. I think it would be rash for anyone to call him a bust, and it would be really dumb for someone on this forum to say that.

If Brinson were 22, no one would be calling him a bust or saying his ceiling was that of (basically) Alejandro De Aza. Two years, in baseball terms, isn't a huge difference. Yeah, Brinson is 24 and a lot of players around his age and younger (Bryce Harper is 25, Mike Trout is 26) have already figured it out. But plenty of players bloom late. Brinson is never going to be in the Mike Trout/Bryce Harper tier, but to think his best case scenario is the Alejandro De Aza/Emilio Bonifacio tier is pretty ridiculous.

my distaste for him stems solely from the fact they dumped Yelich and he was the centerpiece they got back in that trade and he's only 2 years younger than Yelich who was already successful in the bigs and was on a team friendly deal.  It's not like Brinson is 19-20 years old and just starting out.  He's almost the same age as the player he was swapped for.  So far he's been a bust.  I'm not saying he'll end up that way but I also don't see him ever getting to be nearly as good as who he was traded for.

He's been a bust so far though and I have no clue why they've kept him up here.  Ultimately, I'd love to see him succeed as he does have some legitimate power when he runs into a ball and he can certainly play defense. His strikezone recognition is absolutely horrendous at this point though and needs to improve drastically if he is going to have any chance of success.

Let it be known that Brinson, 24, is older than Harper and Trout, 25 and 26 respectively.

Accurate. Little known fact: Brinson is also older than Bartolo Colon, Ichiro, and Don Mattingly.

So his defense was pretty damn good for the longest and lately, he has been having some lapses on the field. Still hitting under .175 on the season with plenty of at bats and off days. Hitting him 7th or 8th in the lineup isn't helping him much either in the NL.

Apparently the new plan with Brinson is to give him a day off each series and then that day he gets detailed and specific extra work in the batting cages. They're treating him like they would in the minor leagues but keeping him up so that he can practice against MLB pitching since he's already done well in Triple A.

Maybe the Marlins are afraid that if Brinson gets send down he will never be back up

Whatever - it doesn't make much sense, but it's Sherman's checkbook, I guess....

its quite possible his continued failures at the plate are finally taking their toll mentally in the field.  I mean when the only thing you've contributed to the team all season is defense and then you screw that up too it's easy to see how that could just snowball into multiple mistakes and screwups.

Yup. Anyone who has played any sport knows how things can snowball from one minor issue to your whole entire game turning to shit.

Brinson is 4th out of all MLB outfielders in Defensive Runs Saved.

I don't think anyone is arguing his defensive prowess.  But even if you're the defensive GOAT a team is going to need you to hit north of the mendoza line to warrant having you as anything more than a late inning defensive sub.
