April 25, 200917 yr If your managing guidebook says Nunez in the 8th and Lindstrom in the 9th and you are going to follow that to the letter, guess what? The Marlins don't need you. Just hang the guideline on the wall and the players can follow it. Don't need you to observe the game and make decisions at all, because you've made them in advance, oblivious to circumstances. I don't blame Lindstrom for the loss. I know he doesn't have much control, which is of course essential to a closer. I wouldn't have him as the team closer tonight or any other night ... not when there are options like Nunez ... who has a better arsenal of pitches. After watching Lindstrom miss three ball pitches to batters by a couple of feet, a couple of times, I'd seen way more than enough to know that the Marlins win would be in jeopardy if you left Lindstrom out there. In fact, I'd venture to say that everyone watching that game knew the Marlins were in trouble if you left Lindstrom out there. You flushed a nice win down the drain. You ensured that there will be fewer fans in the seats the next couple of nights. And I can't even imagine an excuse to help you out.
April 25, 200917 yr 2 things need to get done!! 1- taking Lindstrom out of closer 2- taking Bonerface out of the lead of spot (17k/4BB) not a lead off hitter
April 25, 200917 yr This is Lindstrom fault and am tired of this Braden Looper clone. How many blown saves does this guy get to have before we realize he is a 7th, 8th inning guy? They need to open that wallet and get a closer, and FAST!
April 25, 200917 yr 2 things need to get done!! 1- taking Lindstrom out of closer 2- taking Bonerface out of the lead of spot (17k/4BB) not a lead off hitter 2- Who do you suggest? Maybin is 18Ks/5BB, so I hope not him.
April 25, 200917 yr what? stupid. I mean I know Mr Straightball sucks and all, but it is what it is. Lindstrom is going to be our closer until he has a number of blown saves. He hasnt got it yet, it is what it is. Every capable manager tries to give his relievers defined roles. Deal with it.

April 25, 200917 yr If Maybin went back to lead-off, would he get better pitches to hit? With the pitcher behind him, he isn't gonna get many good pitches to swing at...

Very few managers would remove their closer from a situation in which they still have a chance to get a save. Nothing Fredi did tonight is different from what pretty much any manager will do. You need to TRUST your closer, and if you don't leave him in in this situation, it speaks volumes to the closer about your level (or lack of) trust in him, which could create chaos, not just on the baseball field.
April 25, 200917 yr If Maybin went back to lead-off, would he get better pitches to hit? With the pitcher behind him, he isn't gonna get many good pitches to swing at... I think it's nny who's posted that maybin is only seeing 4 percent less fastball than boner. Also he swings and misses a crazy amount. Mqybins problem pitch is the slider.
April 25, 200917 yr but Fredi should have remove if you see he having problem getting last out i think he was gamable with him hoping he got last out
April 25, 200917 yr Fredi will keep him as a closer until It's too late. Did the same thing with Julio, (even though it wouldn't have mattered since the team was horrible that year) and he did the same sh*t with Gregg.

Did the same thing with Julio, (even though it wouldn't have mattered since the team was horrible that year) and he did the same sh*t with Gregg. Just like every other manager. It also doesn't help that with Julio/Gregg, they clearly had the largest contracts out of the bullpen pitchers, so I'm sure the front office had a say in it. Lindstrom will get his chances, but a couple more of these, & I'm thinking he's done. As a matter of fact...he will likely be unavailable tomorrow, after throwing close to 40 pitches today. If someone (like Nunez) steps in and has a 9th like he had the 8th tonight, the controversy will begin.
April 25, 200917 yr once boni learns to lay off those high fastballs he will walk a ton it seems like everytime hes up its a 3-2 count.

Did Fredi tell Lindstrom to set every batter up with a nice 2-0 count? No - I think not. You don't wreck your NEW closer's already shaky confidence by taking him out just because he's dropped two runs and loaded the bases. You give him the chance to CLOSE the inning. That why he's the closer. He needs to learn HOW to close, and to do that, you give him CLOSE opportunities. Sheesh.
April 25, 200917 yr Didn't happen to watch the game last night, but what an absolute disaster. Lindstrom has been pretty shaky all year now and probably needs to be kept on an extremely short leash at this point...
April 25, 200917 yr Would it be that bad of a thing to go with a closer committee for a few weeks? Give Lindstrom, Nunez and possibly Calero a few chances each and whoever impresses the most wins the closers job. It would also allow Lindstrom to get some work in earlier in games, possibly when there is little/no pressure to allow him to continue to regain his command.

Everybody and their mother knows that Lindstrom shouldn't be closing, but Fredi doesn't understand this. When a pitcher's arsenal consists of only one pitch, and every batter knows what's coming, it doesn't take a genius to know the guy is gonna struggle. The sad part is that Lindstrom will likely remain the closer no matter how much he struggles because "he's our guy", like Jorge Julio and Kevin Gregg.
April 25, 200917 yr He threw a few breaking balls as well, but not enough. Plus if you can throw a 99mph fastball you can throw a 85mph change-up. Lindstrom's issue is control, not variety of pitches. Once he learns where the freaking zone is, he'll be awesome. Okay, IF he learns where the freaking zone is, he'll be awesome.

You also don't want to jeopardize your season by trying to coddle one of your relievers. There's nothing written in stone that says Matt Lindstrom MUST be our closer this season, and certainly not right away. I absolutely would like to see him win the job, but I'm not willing to lose games in order to "build up his confidence". He's a 29 year-old major league pitcher, if he doesn't have confidence go with someone else. This isn't some baby-faced rookie. After a double, a single, and two walks, he's out. Sure it's Lindstrom's fault. He stunk. So Fredi needs to pull him, simple as that. Throw him back out there next game. We're wasting that hot start.
April 25, 200917 yr not only that but it's the phillies. Instead of being a guaranteed +1 game for us, it's a guaranteed -1 one game for us.
April 25, 200917 yr 2 things need to get done!! 1- taking Lindstrom out of closer 2- taking Bonerface out of the lead of spot (17k/4BB) not a lead off hitter Agree about Boner, just as long as Maybin doesn't replace him.

I am not opposed to keeping in your closer after he's given up two runs in a 3-0 game. But Lindstrom was wild and the bases were loaded. His confidence is shaky at that point. You leave him in and he gets the last out, good, but he already isn't on sure footing, mentally. You leave him in, and something like what happened last night happens, what little confidence he had, it is now lost. It would be different if it was 3-2 and no one on or someone on first. But you left your already wild reliever in the worst possible situations? Bad decision.
April 25, 200917 yr Fredi has made some great great moves so far this year, but he tanked it last night... However, saying its not Linstrom's fault is a JOKE!

Actually, Maybin is seeing 56% fastballs, with league average and 59%. EB is seeing 65%, but that's not necessarily because he's batting leadoff. It's probably due much more to the fact that he has trouble hitting fastballs, especially high fastballs. Maybin is seeing enough fastballs, and there is no way to know if he would see more if he were moved to leadoff.
