Hot Stove (2021-2022 offseason)

The Marlins built up some pretty good farm systems under Loria.

Either he makes this trade or doesn't need to because he's already cashed in his chips.

And then he would've traded half of the farm for today's version of Bartolo Colon.

i still 100% believe Loria would have signed Marte for what he was originally asking for (since it wasn't very much) and thus not needed to make this trade. It still disgusts me that I am saying ANYTHING "pro" Loria but man..i am almost positive he would have seen that as a no-brainer move.

I don't know for age 33-36 seasons? I'd rather have Luzardo, Garcia, and Soler (and for the team to commit assets to a CF).

Their offseason plan looks really solid. They have just neglected issue # 1.

This is what makes this all so frustrating. The moves leading up to the lockout were so encouraging only to...just completely neglect the 2 issues remaining that could make this team a sure playoff contender?? It would have been so easy to fix the bullpen through free agency, but now it's either Anthony Bass as closer or trade prospects for RP. It could be Bryan Reynolds in CF for the next 4 years, but instead it's a few guys who might one day be close to as good as Bryan Reynolds. This team is ready to compete THIS YEAR if we have a pair of strong bullpen arms and a good center fielder. Without that? Hello 4th place and thank you to the Washington Nationals.

Miami Herald is demolishing them too - https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/greg-cote/article259932580.html

It's pretty spot on.

Gotta preserve that service time and prospect status for Edward Cabrera.  Gotta try to win the Prospect World Series in 2022!

Yes this is a bad one for me. They have to keep Cabrera down to effectively June to get a year of service time, so this is a 2 month decision pretty much.

Meyer I get because they can keep him down 2-3 weeks and get a year (maybe Meyer is in fact called up late April?). That does't bother me. Cabrera, that ship sailed when they called him up last year. Two months in AAA. Or maybe they just trade him for a CF so who cares.

This is not - play the best 13 arms. When is this ever going to happen? When will this day come? Why are we worrying about 2028?

Dang, Cote went pretty hard!

Love to see it. Ng deserves a portion of the blame for this shit show too.

Shit, Cote went in hard there without lube.

Well deserved.

Sherman is still cheaper than Loria, fact.

Sherman has more money coming in that Loria ever did and if you really run numbers in relation to total revenue, I bet Sherman spends less than Loria.

Thats just fucking sad.

Its why the refrain remains to be said.  They did typical Marlin moves, aka shopping at the bargain bin.

Meanwhile, Braves, Phillies and Mets shopping with the big boys.  4th place team and they are closer to the Nationals than they are to 3rd.

The Marlins improved this offseason.

The only problem is that they were already behind the Mets and the Phillies and they both improved MORE.

It would be one thing to say we arent trading x,y,z because they are one of our best 13 arms (this year really 15 or 16 best arms to break camp).

They arent even doing that which is what reinforces how cheap this organization is, how they dont really care about winning and how they overvalue prospects for whatever dumb reason.

I am hoping that Miami Herald article is the "Kirk Herbstreit ripping Miami AD on ESPN" level event which leads to the Marlins version of Mario Cristobal.

The thing is.... they don't even need to spend money. Just trade prospects and payroll incrementally goes up. I don't understand in what world they have 3 legitimate SP, two of which are aces, another sky high potential throwing gas in Luzardo in spring, and four top 100 pitching prospects, WITH Eder being a fifth but he's fucking hurt, and everyone loves Fulton.... and we are STILL naming Hernandez and Poteet after that. They don't even have a Poteet for CF. Poteet is their 12th best longterm SP option right now!

It's just pathetic. I'd argue with you they may come in third in the division, but who cares. Degree of losing is irrelevant.

ya its really a moot point.  3 teams from the NL East are not making the playoffs in 2022.  Not with the unbalanced schedule and all.

I'm not even sure what they are trying to even prove at this point honestly.

Padres farm system good ?

Per MLBTR:

9:55pm: The Padres currently consider the Pirates asking price on Reynolds to be “prohibitive,” writes Dennis Lin of the Athletic. That’s hardly a surprise, given the reported lofty asks the Bucs have sought in Reynolds talks with other teams.

They have CJ Abrams in their system who I assume would not be moved (and who is probably looking at a position change soon).

They also have Mackenzie Gore who in many ways is similar to Sixto Sanchez in terms of he has been a hightly ranked prospect for a while, but has never really broken through for various reasons.  Gore cause he cant find the strike zone, Sixto cause he has been lazy with his rehab.

Both need are quickly running out of prospect chances honestly.

Marlins could blow away pretty much any organization if they actually wanted Reynolds.

Alright I'm not directing this at you specifically, you just happen to be the most recent to do this, so I apologise.

People.

STOP INCLUDING PABLO IN POTENTIAL BRYAN REYNOLDS TRADES.

HE MAKES ZERO SENSE FOR THE PIRATES RIGHT NOW.

Cabrera or Rogers would make a lot more sense, but Rogers for Reynolds would be a lot closer to a 1-for-1 (it wouldn't be, mind you, but pretty close).

Completely  agree with you. Was more so pointing out value wise how they could make it happen without Watson, Meyer, or Eury

Marlins have any really “deep pockets ” owner in it's short history ? the lack of profitability should be the reason the really deep pockets people not interested in this team. I believe it's difficult for the owners to invest their own money in the roster if they can't earn the money from the team.

It's also just running a business. You can't expect people to care when you routinely cry poverty, yet you are located in Miami which is a top 10 metropolitan/media market area in the country. There is no reason Miami shouldn't be a middle of the pack payroll franchise even with a "winner's bandwagon" mentality fan base. Baseball should be so much fun in Miami. The Dolphins and Heat have no problem getting butts in seats. Neither does Canes football (despite LOL press angle photos. They still sell tickets) who at least do exciting coach changes to give hope. At least they are trying.

It's easy - spend money to make money.

Which is why it's infuriating because they can't even be bottom 8 in payroll, and have an entire top 50-125 prospect longterm starting rotation in the minors (Meyer, Cabrera, Eury, Sixto, Eder), and that's after having two aces, a legitimate # 2/3, a former top 50 prospect, and a solid 5th in the majors all controlled for 3-6 years (Sandy, Rogers, Pablo, Luzardo, Hernandez). We'll ignore they also have Fulton, McCambley, Poteet, Garrett, Holloway, Fitterer, Velez, and others behind this. There are some players there. As well as plenty of bullpen and bullpen potential arms at all levels. Also, they can easily trade a good OF (Bleday/Burdick) if they get one back and have plenty of MI depth to move another one of them (Watson, Salas, Lewis, Cappe, Morisette, Nunez, Devers....), because you do have Jazz, and Wendle/Anderson/Rojas for 2 years each.

They don't even need to spend to take a big step forward. It's just a total failure. But they still have till opening day!

I swear if Reynolds gets dealt somewhere else I am going to rage.

Assuming the Marlins don't get a CF in another deal obv.

You want another thing to rage about.

The Orioles have last year's 5th overall draft pick and is a CF - https://www.fangraphs.com/players/colton-cowser/sa3017018/stats?position=OF. This guy is rated the 41st best prospect in baseball, so he's arguably Marlins # 1 depending on where you have Watson and Meyer.

Why do the Orioles need Mullins and A. Hays when their contending window doesn't start for 2 years? Trade one to the Marlins for comparable pitchers (lots of permutations) and everyone wins here. Hays/Sulser can't cost too much so if they can't trade a marquee Eury name, others down the list make a lot of sense both ways.

Reynolds, Laureano, Mullins, and Hays. All on bottom 5 teams years from contending. Needing pitching in 2 years. You can't write this shit.

The Dodgers just got Craig Kimbrel in exchange for AJ Pollock. There's no way the Marlins couldn't have made a better offer if they'd tried, but I'm sure Ng never even called the White Sox since they were probably looking for a team to take on all of Kimbrel's contract.
