Escobar Traded to Rays

Featured Replies

About a week after the TOR trade, I recall reading about how Escobar was very happy to be here and perfectly OK with moving to 3B. So, a week later he's not?

Beinfest lays it out:

"We met with Yunel about 10 days ago," Marlins president of baseball operations Admin Beinfest said here at the Winter Meetings. "He said he was comfortable playing third base. Recently, he came back to us saying he was not comfortable playing third base. So we were not comfortable moving forward with him as our third baseman, which kind of helped move along this trade."

"When Yunel had this change of heart and was not 100 percent committed to playing third base, it made us pause," Beinfest said.

Good riddance.

Yunel told Marlins he was not comfortable playing 3rd base according to Capozzi

Ya gotta wonder if he really felt that way, or if he said what they didn't want to hear so they would trade him. The rumors were out there when we got him that he would be on the trade block, maybe he just forced the issue.

I gotta say I'm not entirely buying the sudden thought that he changed his mind about 3B. We were rumored to be using him as a trade piece since before the Toronto deal was even official. And then he said he was ok with the move. Why suddenly change now? Seems like a twisting of his words so we look like we had a more serious reason to trade him. If he expresses unhappiness why is he suddenly moved but Stanton and Nolasco are basically ignored when they're unhappy. I know its 3 totally different players but still the same FO. Why listen to one player's unhappiness and not two others?

I hate the way the marlins spin things. Look I didn't want Escobar here as a Marlins fan and glad Marlins go something for him. However if you look at the Toronto trade and the Spin Loria/Beinfest tried to sell us on, this looks like another mistake on the marlins.

They tried to say he was the 3b and now he is not because he wasn't compfortable. How bout Beinfest/Sampson do their homework and get things right in a trade.

Sounds good. He's not an upper-level prospect or anything but could be an adequate middle infielder or even 3B if he continues to hit.

Beinfest said he'll probably play 3B and 2B with the Suns. Whoever the Marlins throw out there at 3B next season will probably be only for a year anyway & then you'd have Cox & Dietrich competing for 2014. Sounds like there's a question whether he could stick at SS but maybe for a few young years he could be a backup option if Hech can't hit at all. Most obvious option would be to just stick him at 2B.

Figure they'll send Cox to AAA now.

Dietrich's had a pretty solid bat during his first three years in the minors. K & BB numbers aren't real good but he's hit for average and a little lefty power there. And he hammers right-handed pitching in particular.

fine trade.

IMO the marlins are using typical marlins BS to justify it though. I'm sure escobar was fine at 3b. However, I can't stand him so good riddance.

Exactly, a good trade but I can't get why the FO has to always come up with some BS excuses. I'd rather them be honest here. Yunel's attitude was a liability and he wasn't intented to be on this team on Opening Day, period.

new idea, let's platoon at every position. bring everyone up, and platoon everyone but Stanton.

Like the A's of 2012

yeah, just like the 2012 A's. didn't they make the playoffs?

Oh they did. Marlins would have to have everything go right for them. Stanton would have to be happy and healthy all year, Lomo would have to have a breakout year and live up to his potential(while staying healthy. Top of the order would have to be electric and get on base on a consistant clip. Young staff will have to develop under young catcher. Catcher would have to call great games all season long. A's had enough power with speed and a pitching staff that all fell into place.

Now defense is another obstacle that has it's own questions that worry me about the 2013 marlins.

For what it's worth, this organization is positioning itself to be very good defensively in 2014

why is anyone happy about this? ew.

s****y return

Baseball America sees him as a second or third baseman long-term, and given above-average power, suggested prior to the season he had a chance at becoming an above-average big league regular.

I don't think it's bad at all.

I am so jaded anyway at this point that I do not believe any of the spin and dribble Beinfest produces, even a meaningless trade as to the affect for 2013. We want to be the 2013 equivalent of the 2012 A's, fine, just put up the tarp to cover the upper decks and sell all the lower deck tickets for $5. The concept of "don't worry, we will spend the money we saved on Escobar" just adds to the insult of the way this place operates.

so then why not trade nolasco? strictly from the idea that we will not compete in 2013, and we are building toward "Moneyball" in 2014 we need more depth and more young talent.

Trade Nolasco. Or trade him in July. Whatever.

What we need to do is acquire a player that can play 3B and can help the young guys. Not a "professional" like Helms, but a player that succeeds as much on process as he does on talent.

It seems to me that that's going to come in the form of a 2B in 2014. I don't think we've got anyone waiting in the wings to take over at second - but we do have two players who are now possible 3B of the future.
