2016 Trade Deadline Thread

Featured Replies

Rodney makes our bullpen better in 2016 and he replaces Capps in it for 2017. This trade has nothing to do with Rodney I still defend that trade.

Capps >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rodney

Also this mid 4 era Rodney could be the rodney the marlins get henceforth. There's a reason SD signed him so cheap (hint he sucked before)

Mike Hill needs to be fired for these trades this season. He has done nothing to improve this team only weaken its already week minor league system and to top it off he gets rid of one of the top rp pitchers in baseball. Smh.. UGH!!!

I am surprised. Nobody realizes that we probably just added 2/5 of our starting rotation while making a playoff push and lost nobody who could help this year other than Cosart. Guerrero has a really live arm by the way, who some project as an MLB closer. Cosart, Naylor and Castillo for Cashner, Rea and Guerrero would be robbery by us in this market. Adding Capps tips there scale in their favor. I love Capps. But righty relievers are our strength. And completely disregarding the TJ factor, especially with a guy using a herky jerky motion is just not fair. Repeat TJ's are way up. 35% of TJs in 2014 were repeats. And for next year, I was using Ellington as an example for a bullpen arm who can take Capps's spot. Right now, I take Rea and Ellington over Capps for just next season for our team.

the shitty thing that is some other team is going to get a MUCH better SP for a lot less in the next day or two.

"The Marlins are in contention for their first playoff berth since 2003 despite a shaky rotation. Aside from ace Jose Fernandez, their starters are 23-24 with an ERA of 4.40."

so they trade for a guy with an 4.75 ERA and a 5.0 ERA

Rodney will be fine but this trade still sucks.

what makes you think he'll be fine? If anything the opposite. .209 babip against and LOB% still at 87. his bb rate sucks and he doesnt k enough like bearclaw to hide it. Zips/steamer have him upper 3s low 4s era ros.

what makes you think he'll be fine?

Erick is sexually attracted to Rodney. Duh.

Anyways, I think Rodney will be fine, too. Mattingly is overusing him, IMO.

Editing in: Case in point, in San Diego, he pitched in just 28 games over three months. Since joining the Marlins on July 1st, he's pitched in 13. Granted, yes, he was their closer in San Diego, but he wasn't used for the sake of being used. Realize that there was also a week off for the team [basically]. He's already pitched in 7 games since the break. Three of those games were losses [one his responsibility].

My point is, he needs to be used a little less.

As for Cashner and Rea helping our sp I honestly don't see it. Both have been pretty mediocre this year. Pretty much like all our sp Besides Fernandez and Conely

I'll take Capps over Rea and Ellington any day.

again Capps one of the top relievers in the game. Yes he had tj surgery but I believe he'll be back and better then ever.

rodney has been so so for us.

Capps>Rodney

Capps>Rea/Ellington

Who projects that? Morons?

I don't know why you would think that the Padres pickup up money on Cashner will translate into us taking on more money somewhere else.  We always overpay with assets in order for the other team to pick up salary.  That is part of the reason we are in this mess prospects wise.  The Dodgers ate Haren's and Dee's contracts and so on.  Every trade that involves a decent contract coming back we ask the other team to take on the money.  It't their MO.  I hope you are right but their track record suggests otherwise.

Don't go there. Did u know Chen was gonna be this big of a bust?

at $16m/year? yes. absolutely.

To be fair, the Marlins were proven right about Henderson Alvarez coming off an injury...they do have more information about this thing than anyone.  Perhaps they just feel he'll never be able to remain healthy with that delivery.  It is violent and he hasn't stayed healthy yet in his career.

True but I'd hope you'd get more in return then some mediocre pitching. Which is exactly what they got back. At the very least if they had gotten some sort of good so or good prospect back maybe I'd be a little less upset at this.  I see all these trades other teams do and i seriously wonder what the hell the Marlins front office is doing. Time and time again it seems like the entire league just sees the Marlins front office as a joke and they prove it with these kinds of trades.

i hope Rea and Cashner pitch well for the team but won't be holding my breath

It's funny, I was the only one to state that we'd be dealing Capps away in this process. When I did, people said no way, he's hurt. You do understand that we didn't have the goods to add more than Cashner/Rea. Ervin Santana, who I wanted, was our only shot because of the $. Plus, the team rightfully wanted a controllable asset, instead of a pure rental, and got 2. I love Capps, but you do realize that other than him, we didn't give up much. And we have Ramos, Rodney, Phelps, Wittgren, Ellington, etc. - lots of controllable righty arms. We had to make a move for starting rotation depth especially with Chen out. And we didn't have the assets to do better than this. I preferred Bud Norris for Paddack and pieces than Rodney. But that shipped sailed. So, if this is what the market dictated, and I believe it did, for us to add starting pitching, then I am on board. Cashner and Rea will be much better with our defense and pen than they were in SD. Maybe Capps is great next year and maybe it wouldn't matter because Jose gets hurt and we finish under .500. You never know. You have to play for this year and we traded (as I predicted weeks ago) the only assets we had.
