May 15, 20233 yr There's almost zero chance at this point that Stallings will return to his Pittsburgh form. Hell, he's not even half of what he was in Pittsburgh. Knowing Fortes ceiling is as a back up, how can we upgrade the catching position? The quick answer is Paul McIntosh. However, he's on the IL. Also, I'm not sure about his defense. The Fish seem reluctant to call him our catcher of the future for a reason, so maybe he ends up being a DH or 1st base. Other in house candidates are Will Banfield and Joe Mack. Mack is still far away and far from a sure thing. Banfield is an Uber defender, but he couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat. That leaves the trade market. Not much out there either, but there are two players I think we should go after. The first is Mitch Garver of the Rangers. He's currently on rehab assignment and is expected back by 5/23. He's a proven bat in his walk year and it probably wouldn't take a whole lot to get him. Heim's breakout season would allow the Rangers to deal him for the right return. The second is Salvador Perez. The only way this works is if they take Avi's contract with them. Of course, that would mean paying more in prospects, but I think we should consider it. They also have the Melendez kid as their future catcher and the Royals are going to suck for the next few seasons. Why waste Perez there? Anyway, that's my two cents worth. Just curious if anyone else has a catcher they want the Fish to target.

May 15, 20233 yr Elias Diaz on the Rockies is bad, but not atrocious like what we've had on Fish Team this season. He wouldn't cost much to go get, offer them someone like George Soriano and call it a day.

I agree, but unlike catcher, we are getting production out of Jazz, DLC and Sanchez in the OF. Arraez is a beast at 2nd and Cooper and Yuli are about league average at 1st. We're gonna have to live with Jean for now at 3rd because we just signed the fucker. At SS, Amaya is finally hot at the plate in AAA and has put up great numbers over his last 10 games. He might be called up sooner rather than later, hopefully. I'm really anxious to see him play. That leaves C as the glaring hole without current production, no in house replacement, and no real financial commitment. Thats why I think C is the priority right now.

He can't hit lefties even though he's a RH batter for some reason. He might make a good platoon with Fortes? Don't know anything about his defense. However, he's not Stallings so I'm in. LOL

May 15, 20233 yr In reality...the solution (for now) lies in house. Let Stallings go, make Fortes C1 and call up Honeycrisp to be C2. Won't be any worse and likely will upgrade at least slightly.

May 15, 20233 yr also...even if Salvador Perez suddenly did agree to be traded (which I don't think he or the Royals have any interest in doing)....some of you wouldn't be very happy with what it would take to acquire him.
May 15, 20233 yr Banfield is the only in-house answer at AA or above. He showed a few signs at the plate towards the end of last year and he's been hitting OK of late. That said, he's still a .203 hitter at AA and that's been pretty much his level as far as average. He is still just 23 so if he can put any pop and stop channeling Kyle Skipworth might be serviceable. McIntosh would be a massive defensive liability at the ML level. Love his bat but he is not close to a major league catcher. He would get absolutely killed behind the plate. He's a DH at best. Mack and Ronald Hernandez are our two best prospects but Mack hasn't shown anything as a pro and Hernandez hasn't been that great at rookie ball or lower. At AAA Austin Allen has been terrible at the plate and even worse throwing out runners. We need to look at the teams with a surplus of catching. Endy Rodriguez with the Pirates is who I'd be looking at. They like Henry Davis better so he may be expendable. He has good pop and also some versatility in the field.

I would be shocked if anyone new they tried at catcher to replace stallings wouldn't provide an immediate upgrade, even if incremental. He's been that bad.

It always seems like the Marlins get formerly good players right at the tail end of their careers when they’re on a big decline. Like when you wait until some groceries are on sale but it’s because they’re about to expire in a few days. But that’s the story of most of the Marlins history. Either have great players right at the beginning of their careers and still developing and then trade them right when they’re about to reach peak years and then they go to other teams and play their best years of baseball after the Marlins did all the work of developing them. It’s like the Marlins have always been a farm team for the rest of MLB team’s future star players. Either that or they get formerly good or great players when they’re close to retirement like Andre Dawson, Tim Raines (but those two gets a pass since the Marlins weren’t around in their peak years), Luis Gonzalez, Ichiro, Curtis Granderson, Aaron Boone and others. Only very few times have the Marlins had star players in their peak years.. Most of ‘97 team, Pudge in 2003, Stanton for a couple of years, m and right now with Sandy and maybe Arraez.
