Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported back in August that Miami would try to lock up its 24-year-old star for the long term, though the team was not necessarily optimistic of reaching agreement. For his part, Stanton tells Nightengale that he is willing to hear offers, but still wants to see “some progression moving forward.” “It will be interesting to hear what they have to say when the time comes,” he said, “but right now, I’m not worrying about it. I mean, we’re still in this season. When this season is over, then we can start thinking about 2015.”

I'm scared what the numbers would be just because it would take an obvious overpay AND a no trade clause to get the deal done.

 

Obviously I want Stanton here forever, but I don't want that deal long term hamstringing us in regards to re-signing some of the other talent on the team (Fernandez/Yelich/Cosart/Alvarez/Ozuna) knowing that Loria isn't willing to pay to maintain a team with a $26-27 million a year Stanton and give respectable deals to some of our other top talent).

 

 

I think they are going to buy out a couple of guys (Yelich for one) and then approach Stanton. Show him they are committed.

I'm not sure why so many people hesitate with Ozuna. He is super talented and just seems to get better every game. I would be ecstatic if they extended all three.

While this season is seemingly pushing Stanton passed the Marlins price range, as Ken Rosenthal seems to think, at the same time winning makes Loria do some bold things. For better or worse, Loria has proven time and time again that he'll attempt big moves if he thinks it'll bring wins (Delgado, Reyes, Pujols, Cespedes, etc.). So in that sense, the better Stanton's season is and the closer the MVP-caliber numbers push us to a playoff spot... don't be surprised it Loria is actually more inclined to spend big on Stanton.

 

I'm just saying that we can't assume Loria will low-ball Stanton with whatever offer is upcoming.

 

Could Stanton accept an enormous offer and then be traded away a few years later if the rest of the team tanks? Of course. But at the same time don't count out Loria from truly making an offer that Stanton has to accept. This offseason shall be very interesting.
