All that can be said is that it would've been hard to let him stay on this team next season. Probably will go down as one of the three worst decisions in Marlins history (not trading Bell, signing him). He may have struggled worse here than elsewhere, though. I think that saving $13M when you have an awful player and no leverage is pretty good.
October 20, 201213 yr Author I wonder how Loria feels about this? He was supposedly the one who wanted Bell. Well it was a horrible failure. Maybe now he'll keep his nose out of the baseball operation. At least in terms of signing guys. Hopefully it makes him mad enough and leaves him so disgruntled and angry that he sells the team.

Damn it, Beinfest! The fact that we got somebody, and didn't have to pay all of Bell's salary, is a win in my book

October 21, 201213 yr Author He can play 3B and you would give him 2 years and hope this year was an abberation. Although Peralta is a pretty hot/cold player year to year. This is among the worst free agent classes I can rememeber though. I would be overjoyed if they resigned Anibal though.

I think that saving $13M when you have an awful player and no leverage is pretty good. No arguments there. It just turned out to be an awful, no good, very bad signing. Basically cost us $17 million ($9 million this year plus $8 million to get rid of him) for the production he gave us. There are no winners in this trade.
October 21, 201213 yr This isn't Hanley Ramirez we traded, arguably one of the top players at a valuable position who has had a down season and a half. This is a reliever who was probably overpaid even if he had performed but was an abysmmal performer at the least valuable position in the game, so we were lucky to be able to get rid of it at all. I highly doubt that ridding the organization of the Heath Bell is what gets Beinfest fired. He may indeed be cut loose, but it will have nothing to do with what he got back. It is funny to think that years ago the Padres were starting the bidding for Bell at something like Maybin AND Morrison.
