The Blue Jays traded Koskie to the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday for minor league righthander Brian Wolfe. Toronto has had a busy offseason, signing free agent pitchers A.J. Burnett and B.J. Ryan and acquiring Glaus and first baseman Lyle Overbay in separate deals with Arizona and Milwaukee, respectively. However, the trades left a surplus of corner infielders for the Blue Jays, who already had Shea Hillenbrand and Eric Hinske on the roster, making Koskie expendable. Signed to a three-year, $17 million contract before last season, Koskie missed over two months due to a broken thumb and finished with a .249 average, 11 homers and 36 RBI in 97 games in his first season north of the border. Koskie, 32, who spent the first seven seasons with Minnesota, is a career .277 batter with 112 homers and 473 RBI in 913 games. He will add a veteran presence to the Brewers' infield, which is planning on starting youngsters Prince Fielder, Rickie Weeks and J.J. Hardy next season. Bill Hall also figures to get some playing time in 2006. "Corey is a demonstrated run-producer, has excellent defensive skills and brings postseason experience with him to our ballclub," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. Rotoworld: According to the Boston Herald, the Orioles want Andy Marte along with Manny Ramirez and Matt Clement from the Red Sox for Miguel Tejada. Talks between the two teams appear to have stalled. ---- Baltimore rejected the offer of Manny, Clement AND cash for Tejada. What the hell. :plain If anything I think Boston would be giving too much in that original deal with Clement as well, since Manny's numbers are better than Tejada's. Baltimore's proposal above is just plain idiotic.

Update on the deal: Jan. 2, 2006 - 10:55 pm et Two officials familiar with the talks told Newsday that the Mets are moving closer to acquiring Danys Baez from the Rays, perhaps for Jae Seo, Kaz Matsui and cash. We find it hard to believe Baez would come that cheap. Even if the Rays would only be only responsible for $2.5 million of the $8 million he's set to make, Matsui shouldn't be viewed as a valuable part of any deal. Beane has made some horrible decisions in the past. See: Bobby Kielty. That really worked out. Not to take credit away from the guy because he's done well with limited resources too, but if he were in charge of Florida I doubt he would've been able to acquire as many top line prospects that Beinfest did. Beane sometimes tends to settle for anything rather than bargaining for the best deal. In my opinion, of course.

If I remember correctly, Todd Jones was reported to have signed with the Tigers nearly two days before the midnight deadline. So, I still view us as cheap SOBs here, because it was HIGHLY likely he wasn't going to turn down a two-year deal for $11 Million when he COULD get maybe half of that in a one-year deal through arbitration after a season that TJones couldn't have expected to duplicate. It was a verbal deal with the Tigers. He didn't officially sign until after the deadline. Look how the verbal deal with the O's and Burnitz turned out, verbal deals can EASILY be renegged. This was all a beat up against the FO.

I think Borowski has a good shot at being our closer. I'd love to see him have a Todd Jones rebound type year, but I doubt it. It'll give Bowyer, Resop and Messenger some veteran leadership and give them some more time to develop before one of them becomes a closer.

If they wanted a seond baseman who can still deliver offensively and can play SS as well, Rich Aurilia is sitting out there for small $$$. Wrong. He rejected the Reds offer for $2 million.

beinfest is a stud GM about the only good guy in the front office for the fish I totally agree. Beinfest might be the most creative and resourceful GM there is considering what he has to work with. I think he's done an amazing job in building this team for the future.
