This is actually the first time I've heard the marlins actually calling a team regarding Giancarlo. All I've heard is marlins receiving calls not vice versa.

Oh, and our pitching depth already includes Turner/Eovaldi/Alvarez and guys like Fernandez/Heaney/Nicolino are bound to get a shot by September, possible even July, and Adam Conley/Charlie Lowell/Mason Hope/Brad Hand in the background. (Add in a top 40 prospect in Perez if we could pry him in the deal).

 

I hate to say this, but trading Stanton to Texas for that package could make us a better team down the road.

I still think a Stanton trade is unlikely anyway. I doubt a team steps up to our high demands and we rightfully have them real high.

The reason I'm saying to do the trade now is because Profar is going to be in the Rangers everyday lineup soon, and if he starts proving he's worthy of that #1 overall prospect ranking, then his value goes up exponentially and our chances of trading for him die. Olt is obtainable because of Beltre's contract, and what I said about Profar performing well goes equally for Perez. The fan base is going to hate the Marlins regardless, might as well trade the star player at a time when we can get maximum value for him, allowing us to rebuild properly.

At least Stanton would be happy with a padre trade. Close to LA. His wet dream.

I agree with this. It's not going to happen, and I believe it's because the Marlins want to keep Stanton as he's the only marketable player left and they control him for four more years. It's awesome to keep him if there's a legitimate chance Stanton is willing to sign a long term deal buying out arbitration years. I'm personally not sold on Stanton wanting to stay here long term, even if we were to offer a fair deal. It would take a winning season and a deal that will eventually reach over $100 million after we wait long enough to keep him. I just don't feel like waiting for the Miguel Cabrera situation to happen all over again. There's never going to be as good a mixture of prospects as Texas currently has. Might as well take Texas' future (if they're willing to trade them).

I understand it's hard to get rid of an HOF caliber talent like Stanton, but if Texas is willing to offer Profar/Olt/Perez, I don't see how we can turn that down. I feel like the lineup is deeper after a Texas trade and the rotation becomes deeper and probably better. Obviously the outfield takes a hit, but there's enough outfield depth in our minor league system and outfielders are always available in free agency that it becomes advantageous to do the deal. I see the first team as a 70-75 win team, and I think the second team has a potential to be an 80+ win team both in the short and long term.

The positives for Texas in such a deal is that they fill the hole left by Hamilton leaving, barely change their major league roster, and add a long term piece in Stanton. Not to even mention that Texas is still in win now mode and this kind of trade can transform them from a great team to "The team to beat" in a nanosecond. I know it's a lot to ask for Texas to give up their top three prospects all ranked in the top 40, but I don't understand how this deal isn't even being talked about between Daniels and Beinfest.

Gyorko, Kelly, Boxberger would almost certainly be included in such a deal. Robbie Erlin is another name.

I think that best approach would be to try to get some prospects that are developed further than Miller and Maybin were. They should be legitimately close to being MLB ready without being rushed.

No shit? Generally a farm system that's ranked as high as them has two, maybe three high caliber prospects with other prospects in the B range.

I just pointing out that there's probably a handful of teams with more attractive high caliber contracts. Whether they are willing to part with them is another story.

I guess Gyorko-Grandal is as close as the Pads could get to a Profar-Olt combo if you want 2 "can't miss" guys. It's not Texas though. And then you've got the Grandal testosterone suspension thing.. Liriano's up there but maybe not as much need for OF.

That was sudden. Only two things would explain that, if true. Either Stanton has recently told his agent that he'll NEVER sign with the Marlins for ANY amount, no matter how ridiculous and his agent relayed that to the Marlins in the hope of getting him dealt immediately and then told Stanton to shut up from this point forward (as any good attorney instructs every client,) or the Marlins decided on their own that he'll never sign long-term no matter how well '13 and/or '14 goes and therefore want to realize maximum value right now.

 

If either is true, how much can the Marlins get someone to overpay for a potential (and partially demonstrated) top-10 or 20 player of all-time? Should be a lot. Nothing like a good bidding war.

 

Then again, it could all be BS rumors and Stanton plays RF for the Marlins for the next few years or longer. Either way, Marlins baseball is rarely uninteresting.

There has been heavy trade speculation surrounding Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton ever since the club's blockbuster deal with the Blue Jays and the outfielder's subsequent displeasure with the team. The Marlins also publicly acknowledged that they are willing to listen on Stanton and any other player, as per their club policy. However, a team source tells Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald that they haven't even discussed the possibility of trading Stanton internally.

The source said flatly that the Marlins "are not moving" Stanton while another source who is familiar with the Marlins' intentions says that the club still plans to have him start the season in Miami and occupy the clean-up spot.

It was reported last night that the Padres and Marlins had preliminary talks about the 23-year-old, but Spencer was told that isn't the case.

Well look, "haven't even discussed the possibility of trading him" is ridiculous on the face. They've already said they'd listen to offers so of course they've considered the idea. It's simple, don't do it unless you aren't signing the guy, and even then only if you're blown away.

If they do trade him, they simply cannot miss like the Cabrera trade. I know that was obviously not the intention but another miss would be devastating.
